    Diversity combining in hybrid RF/FSO systems with PSK modulation

    We present a novel architecture for hybrid radio frequency (RF)/ free space optical (FSO) wireless systems without feedback or channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. Under the assumption that 60 GHz RF and FSO systems support the same data rates, the proposed implementation transmits the same data over both links, using phase shift keying (PSK) as a common modulation scheme, and combines the signals from each individual link at the receiver on a symbol-by-symbol basis. Two popular diversity combining schemes are considered, namely, selection combining (SC) and maximal ratio combining (MRC), while tractable analytical approximations for the bit error rate (BER) are obtained. Investigations over various weather conditions and link distances revealed that the proposed implementation fully exploits the complementary nature of RF and FSO channels, even when one of the two available links fails. Furthermore, the comparison of the combining schemes demonstrates MRC as the optimum combining scheme, offering link distance gains compared to SC

    We calculate gravitational dressed tachyon correlators in non critcal dimensions. The 2D gravity part of our theory is constrained to constant curvature. Then scaling dimensions of gravitational dressed vertex operators are equal to their bare conformal dimensions. Considering the model as d+2 dimensional critical string we calculate poles of generalized Shapiro-Virasoro amplitudes.Comment: 14 page

    Improved survival following surgery and radiation therapy for olfactory neuroblastoma: analysis of the SEER database

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Olfactory Neuroblastoma is a rare malignant tumor of the olfactory tract. Reports in the literature comparing treatment modalities for this tumor are limited.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The SEER database (1973-2006) was queried by diagnosis code to identify patients with Olfactory Neuroblastoma. Kaplan-Meier was used to estimate survival distributions based on treatment modality. Differences in survival distributions were determined by the log-rank test. A Cox multiple regression analysis was then performed using treatment, race, SEER historic stage, sex, age at diagnosis, year at diagnosis and SEER geographic registry.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 511 Olfactory Neuroblastoma cases were reported. Five year overall survival, stratified by treatment modality was: 73% for surgery with radiotherapy, 68% for surgery only, 35% for radiotherapy only, and 26% for neither surgery nor radiotherapy. There was a significant difference in overall survival between the four treatment groups (p < 0.01). At ten years, overall survival stratified by treatment modality and stage, there was no significant improvement in survival with the addition of radiation to surgery.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Best survival results were obtained for surgery with radiotherapy.</p
