    Ferroelectric and dielectric characterization studies on relaxor- and ferroelectric-like strontium-barium niobates

    Ferroelectric domain structure evolution induced by an external electric field was investigated by means of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) method in two strontium-barium niobate single crystals of nominal composition: Sr_{0.70}Ba_{0.30}Nb_{2}O_{6} (SBN:70 - relaxor) and Sr_{0.26}Ba_{0.74}Nb_{2}O_{6} (SBN:26 - ferroelectric). Our results provide evidence that the broad phase transition and frequency dispersion that are exhibited in SBN:70 crystal have a strong link to the configuration of ferroelectric microdomains. The large leakage current revealed in SBN:26 may compensate internal charges acting as pinning centers for domain walls, which gives rise to a less restricted domain growth similar to that observed in classical ferroelectrics. Microscale studies of a switching process in conjunction with electrical measurements allowed us to establish a relationship between local properties of the domain dynamics and macroscopic response i.e., polarization hysteresis loop and dielectric properties.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

    Decentralizing water resource management : economic incentives, accountability, and assurance

    Private sector involvement and user participation in water resource management are not new, say the authors. They give examples that demonstrate how willing users and the private sector are able to improve water use and play a larger role in water resources management. User participation and private sector involvement, if properly structured, can provide the incentives needed to stabilize and improve the efficiency of irrigation and water supply systems. They can add flexibility, transparency, and accountability and can reduce the state's administrative and financial burden. A 1989 World Bank review of 21 impact evaluations of irrigation projects, for example, found cost recovery to be excellent in those projects in which water management and operations and maintenance had been entrusted to water users. Greater private sector and user participation can effectively increase user responsibility for managing and financing water projects while freeing governments to focus on broader water resource management concerns. The authors provide examples of decentralized water management in developing country water supply and irrigation systems. Governments should: more actively regulate private sector exploitation of groundwater, especially for irrigation; take measures to encourage price competition among private suppliers of water for both domestic and agricultural uses; and play an active role in organizing water user associations, especially for irrigation and rural water supply systems, and in giving them technical assistance. As numerous examples highlight, such activities should be designed to reduce the transaction costs of organizing and to establish a sense of assurance and accountability within the water user community.     Crystal structure of the high temperature phase of strontium barium niobate

    Pure and undoped strontium-barium niobate Sr0:40Ba0:60Nb2O6 (SBN40) single crystals grown by the Czochralski method were investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The study below TC (429 K for SBN40) confirmed the structure with P4bm space group. Above this temperature the structure transforms into the paraelectric, centrosymmetric one with P4=mbm space group. Analysis of the recorded diffraction patterns allowed to observe several signs of crystal structure modulation. On the registered diffraction images satellite reflections were found. A modulation vector q = ( ; ; ), where = 0:3075(6) (at room temperature) was found and it was similar to that occurring in the SBN61. In addition, above the phase transition temperature on the (hk) planes with l integer a weak diffuse scattering was observed

    Pulse combustion: The importance of characteristic times

    The response of a valved pulse combustor to changes in the relative timing between the resonant pressure wave and the instantaneous energy release rate has been examined. Experiments were designed to examine the pulse combustor's response to independent changes in the experimental conditions that resulted in nearly independent changes in the fluid dynamic species mixing time, the fluid dynamic mixing time of cold reactants with hot products, the characteristic chemical kinetics time, and the characteristic resonance time. The time scales considered in this study were adjusted independently to modify the coupling between the instantaneous energy release rate and the resonant pressure wave, thereby modifying the magnitude of the pressure oscillations and altering the frequency of operation.     The nonlinear time-dependent response of isotactic polypropylene

    Tensile creep tests, tensile relaxation tests and a tensile test with a constant rate of strain are performed on injection-molded isotactic polypropylene at room temperature in the vicinity of the yield point. A constitutive model is derived for the time-dependent behavior of semi-crystalline polymers. A polymer is treated as an equivalent network of chains bridged by permanent junctions. The network is modelled as an ensemble of passive meso-regions (with affine nodes) and active meso-domains (where junctions slip with respect to their positions in the bulk medium with various rates). The distribution of activation energies for sliding in active meso-regions is described by a random energy model. Adjustable parameters in the stress--strain relations are found by fitting experimental data. It is demonstrated that the concentration of active meso-domains monotonically grows with strain, whereas the average potential energy for sliding of junctions and the standard deviation of activation energies suffer substantial drops at the yield point. With reference to the concept of dual population of crystalline lamellae, these changes in material parameters are attributed to transition from breakage of subsidiary (thin) lamellae in the sub-yield region to fragmentation of primary (thick) lamellae in the post-yield region of deformation.Comment: 29 pages, 12 figure

    Inhibition of Striatal Soluble Guanylyl Cyclase-cGMP Signaling Reverses Basal Ganglia Dysfunction and Akinesia in Experimental Parkinsonism

    There is clearly a necessity to identify novel non-dopaminergic mechanisms as new therapeutic targets for Parkinson's disease (PD). Among these, the soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC)-cGMP signaling cascade is emerging as a promising candidate for second messenger-based therapies for the amelioration of PD symptoms. In the present study, we examined the utility of the selective sGC inhibitor 1H-[1], [2], [4] oxadiazolo-[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ) for reversing basal ganglia dysfunction and akinesia in animal models of PD.The utility of the selective sGC inhibitor ODQ for reversing biochemical, electrophysiological, histochemical, and behavioral correlates of experimental PD was performed in 6-OHDA-lesioned rats and mice chronically treated with MPTP.We found that one systemic administration of ODQ is sufficient to reverse the characteristic elevations in striatal cGMP levels, striatal output neuron activity, and metabolic activity in the subthalamic nucleus observed in 6-OHDA-lesioned rats. The latter outcome was reproduced after intrastriatal infusion of ODQ. Systemic administration of ODQ was also effective in improving deficits in forelimb akinesia induced by 6-OHDA and MPTP.Pharmacological inhibition of the sGC-cGMP signaling pathway is a promising non-dopaminergic treatment strategy for restoring basal ganglia dysfunction and attenuating motor symptoms associated with PD
