On the internal target model in a tracking task
An optimal control model for predicting operator's dynamic responses and errors in target tracking ability is summarized. The model, which predicts asymmetry in the tracking data, is dependent on target maneuvers and trajectories. Gunners perception, decision making, control, and estimate of target positions and velocity related to crossover intervals are discussed. The model provides estimates for means, standard deviations, and variances for variables investigated and for operator estimates of future target positions and velocities
On the Relationship Between the Generalized Equality Classifier and ART 2 Neural Networks
In this paper, we introduce the Generalized Equality Classifier (GEC) for use as an unsupervised clustering algorithm in categorizing analog data. GEC is based on a formal definition of inexact equality originally developed for voting in fault tolerant software applications. GEC is defined using a metric space framework. The only parameter in GEC is a scalar threshold which defines the approximate equality of two patterns. Here, we compare the characteristics of GEC to the ART2-A algorithm (Carpenter, Grossberg, and Rosen, 1991). In particular, we show that GEC with the Hamming distance performs the same optimization as ART2. Moreover, GEC has lower computational requirements than AR12 on serial machines

The impact of inflation uncertainty on economic growth: a MRS-IV approach
We empirically investigate inflation uncertainty effects on output growth for the US by implementing a Markov regime switching model as we account for endogeneity problems. We show that inflation uncertainty -obtained from a Markov regime switching GARCH model - has a negative and regime dependent impact on output growth. Moreover, we find that the smooth probability of high growth regime falls long before the recent financial crisis was imminent. This might be driven by a regime dependent causality, an issue which has been left unexplored

1985-2009. Employing a Markov regime switching approach to model
output dynamics, we show that inflation uncertainty obtained from a
Markov regime switching GARCH model exerts a negative and regime
dependant impact on output growth. In particular, we show that the
negative impact of inflation uncertainty on output growth is almost
4.5 times higher during the low growth regime than that during the
high growth regime. We verify the robustness of our findings using
quarterly data
Evaluation of a fault tolerant system for an integrated avionics sensor configuration with TSRV flight data
The performance analysis results of a fault inferring nonlinear detection system (FINDS) using sensor flight data for the NASA ATOPS B-737 aircraft in a Microwave Landing System (MLS) environment is presented. First, a statistical analysis of the flight recorded sensor data was made in order to determine the characteristics of sensor inaccuracies. Next, modifications were made to the detection and decision functions in the FINDS algorithm in order to improve false alarm and failure detection performance under real modelling errors present in the flight data. Finally, the failure detection and false alarm performance of the FINDS algorithm were analyzed by injecting bias failures into fourteen sensor outputs over six repetitive runs of the five minute flight data. In general, the detection speed, failure level estimation, and false alarm performance showed a marked improvement over the previously reported simulation runs. In agreement with earlier results, detection speed was faster for filter measurement sensors soon as MLS than for filter input sensors such as flight control accelerometers
An aircraft sensor fault tolerant system
The design of a sensor fault tolerant system which uses analytical redundancy for the Terminal Configured Vehicle (TCV) research aircraft in a Microwave Landing System (MLS) environment was studied. The fault tolerant system provides reliable estimates for aircraft position, velocity, and attitude in the presence of possible failures in navigation aid instruments and onboard sensors. The estimates, provided by the fault tolerant system, are used by the automated guidance and control system to land the aircraft along a prescribed path. Sensor failures are identified by utilizing the analytic relationship between the various sensor outputs arising from the aircraft equations of motion
FINDS: A fault inferring nonlinear detection system. User's guide
The computer program FINDS is written in FORTRAN-77, and is intended for operation on a VAX 11-780 or 11-750 super minicomputer, using the VMS operating system. The program detects, isolates, and compensates for failures in navigation aid instruments and onboard flight control and navigation sensors of a Terminal Configured Vehicle aircraft in a Microwave Landing System environment. In addition, FINDS provides sensor fault tolerant estimates for the aircraft states which are then used by an automatic guidance and control system to land the aircraft along a prescribed path. FINDS monitors for failures by evaluating all sensor outputs simultaneously using the nonlinear analytic relationships between the various sensor outputs arising from the aircraft point mass equations of motion. Hence, FINDS is an integrated sensor failure detection and isolation system
A preliminary design for flight testing the FINDS algorithm
This report presents a preliminary design for flight testing the FINDS (Fault Inferring Nonlinear Detection System) algorithm on a target flight computer. The FINDS software was ported onto the target flight computer by reducing the code size by 65%. Several modifications were made to the computational algorithms resulting in a near real-time execution speed. Finally, a new failure detection strategy was developed resulting in a significant improvement in the detection time performance. In particular, low level MLS, IMU and IAS sensor failures are detected instantaneously with the new detection strategy, while accelerometer and the rate gyro failures are detected within the minimum time allowed by the information generated in the sensor residuals based on the point mass equations of motion. All of the results have been demonstrated by using five minutes of sensor flight data for the NASA ATOPS B-737 aircraft in a Microwave Landing System (MLS) environment
Digital flight control systems
The design of stable feedback control laws for sampled-data systems with variable rate sampling was investigated. These types of sampled-data systems arise naturally in digital flight control systems which use digital actuators where it is desirable to decrease the number of control computer output commands in order to save wear and tear of the associated equipment. The design of aircraft control systems which are optimally tolerant of sensor and actuator failures was also studied. Detection of the failed sensor or actuator must be resolved and if the estimate of the state is used in the control law, then it is also desirable to have an estimator which will give the optimal state estimate even under the failed conditions
