Rearward-facing steps in laminar supersonic flows with and without suction

    Get PDF
An experimental investigation of heat-transfer and pressure distributions within regions of laminar separated flows produced by two-dimensional rearward-facing steps has been carried out at freestream Mach numbers of around 4 in the range of step height-to-boundary layer thickness varying from 0.1 to 2.4. With no suction from the separated area, the ratio of the maximum post-step heat transfer to the attached-flow values was less than unity. The maximum heating-rate region was located far downstream of the reattachment plate stagnation point. Mass suction from the separated area increased the local heating rates, this effect was however relatively weak for purely laminar flow conditions and the competing effect of the step height clearly predominated. At step heights comparable with boundary-layer thickness, even removing the entire approaching boundary layer was not sufficient to raise the post-step heating rates above the flat-plate values

Getting on the E List: E-Mail Use in a Community of Service Provider

    Get PDF
This case examines how a community of organizations providing service to people experiencing homelessness made use of an electronic mail list. Current economic conditions have encouraged organizations in various sectors—including nonprofits—that might normally compete for scarce resources to collaborate with one another to increase their chances of survival. One set of tools likely to be of value in such relationships includes various online discussion technologies. An examination of this community’s email list use over a three-year period suggests a somewhat complex picture regarding technology use. More specifically, some issues both constrain and enable use. Additionally, seemingly basic and minimal uses of the list provided not only the greatest functionality for the users, but also led to several unanticipated consequences for those involved

Enhancement of Cathepsin B activity in irradiated mouse testes

The irradiation of mouse testes at 600 rads is accompanied by extensive tissue destruction which ultimately results in a 70% loss of organ weight but displays appreciable recovery which is usually complete by week 18. The attrition phase of testicular weight is concurrent with a conspicuous elevation in cathepsin B activity. This is interpreted to reflect the extensive proteolysis that must form the basis for such tissue weight loss. The recovery period, in contrast, is characterized by an attenuation in the activity of the enzyme. Further analyses reveal that the rise in hydrolytic activity is not due to lysosomal membrane breakage. Nor does it seem to be related to an increase in the number of lysosomes. Instead, our data are more consistent with the contention that the rise in cathepsin B activity may be associated with an increase in protein synthesis. As a result, some lysosomes may contain a larger number of enzyme molecules. This hypothesis is supported by our demonstration that radiation induces a distinct shift in the density of lysosomes toward the heavier components. The significance of such radiation-induced enhancement of protein synthesis in terms of a general response of tissues to radiation damage is discussed

Resummation Effects in Vector-Boson and Higgs Associated Production

Fixed-order QCD radiative corrections to the vector-boson and Higgs associated production channels, pp -> VH (V=W, Z), at hadron colliders are well understood. We combine higher order perturbative QCD calculations with soft-gluon resummation of both threshold logarithms and logarithms which are important at low transverse momentum of the VH pair. We study the effects of both types of logarithms on the scale dependence of the total cross section and on various kinematic distributions. The next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNNLL) resummed total cross sections at the LHC are almost identical to the fixed-order perturbative next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) rates, indicating the excellent convergence of the perturbative QCD series. Resummation of the VH transverse momentum (p_T) spectrum provides reliable results for small values of p_T and suggests that implementing a jet-veto will significantly decrease the cross sections.Comment: 25 pages, references update
