Child abuse: a common problem in Curaçao?

Objective: To assess the prevalence of child abuse among high school students in Curacao. Methods: A questionnaire survey among high school students up to 17 years of age was conducted. The questionnaire was based on existing literature and validated questionnaires. The questionnaire used was analysed and adapted to the situation in Curacao by a panel of experts on child abuse. The primary objective was to gain insight into the incidence, prevalence and various forms of child abuse among students in Curacao. Five forms of child abuse are distinguished in the literature: physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and exploitation. Furthermore, the degree of confidence of the students in general practitioners (GPs) as care providers in the field of child abuse was explored. Results: Questionnaires from 545 of the 628 respondents were included. In total, 43% of the respondents had ever-experienced an event which could be defined as (a form of) child abuse. More than one-third of the respondents reporting child abuse ever had an experience that could be interpreted as physical abuse. More than 15% of the respondents reporting child abuse had experienced sexual abuse. Girls experienced significantly more sexual abuse than boys. Emotional abuse in the last year was experienced by 3% of the respondents. One per cent of the respondents ever-experienced neglect. According to most respondents, GPs were not seen as care providers in cases of child abuse; they believed that GPs were mainly to be consulted for illnesses or physical symptoms and not for forms of child abuse. Conclusion: The prevalence of ever-having-experienced a form of child abuse is estimated at 431 per 1000 students. Child abuse, particularly physical abuse, is common in Curacao, and is probably comparable to other surrounding countries. General practitioners were not seen as care providers in identifying and reporting cases of child abuse according to most respondents

Desiccation Responses and Survival of \u3ci\u3eSinorhizobium meliloti\u3c/i\u3e USDA 1021 in Relation to Growth Phase, Temperature, Chloride and Sulfate Availability

Aims: To identify physical and physiological conditions that affect the survival of Sinorhizobium meliloti USDA 1021 during desiccation. Methods and Results: An assay was developed to study desiccation response of S. meliloti USDA 1021 over a range of environmental conditions. We determined the survival during desiccation in relation to (i) matrices and media, (ii) growth phase, (iii) temperature, and (iv) chloride and sulfate availability. Conclusions: This study indicates that survival of S. meliloti USDA 1021 during desiccation is enhanced: (i) when cells were dried in the stationary phase, (ii) with increasing drying temperature at an optimum of 37°C, and (iii) during an increase of chloride and sulfate, but not sodium or potassium availability. In addition, we resolved that the best matrix to test survival was nitrocellulose filters. Significance and Impact of the Study: The identification of physical and physiological factors that determine the survival during desiccation of S. meliloti USDA 1021 may aid in (i) the strategic development of improved seed inocula, (ii) the isolation, and (iii) the development of rhizobial strains with improved ability to survive desiccation. Furthermore, this work may provide insights into the survival of rhizobia under drought conditions. © 2006 The Society for Applied Microbiology

    Tracking-Assisted Segmentation of Biological Cells

U-Net and its variants have been demonstrated to work sufficiently well in biological cell tracking and segmentation. However, these methods still suffer in the presence of complex processes such as collision of cells, mitosis and apoptosis. In this paper, we augment U-Net with Siamese matching-based tracking and propose to track individual nuclei over time. By modelling the behavioural pattern of the cells, we achieve improved segmentation and tracking performances through a re-segmentation procedure. Our preliminary investigations on the Fluo-N2DH-SIM+ and Fluo-N2DH-GOWT1 datasets demonstrate that absolute improvements of up to 3.8 % and 3.4% can be obtained in segmentation and tracking accuracy, respectively.Comment: Accepted in NeurIPS2019, Medical Imaging meets NeurIPS worksho

On Uniquely Closable and Uniquely Typable Skeletons of Lambda Terms

Uniquely closable skeletons of lambda terms are Motzkin-trees that predetermine the unique closed lambda term that can be obtained by labeling their leaves with de Bruijn indices. Likewise, uniquely typable skeletons of closed lambda terms predetermine the unique simply-typed lambda term that can be obtained by labeling their leaves with de Bruijn indices. We derive, through a sequence of logic program transformations, efficient code for their combinatorial generation and study their statistical properties. As a result, we obtain context-free grammars describing closable and uniquely closable skeletons of lambda terms, opening the door for their in-depth study with tools from analytic combinatorics. Our empirical study of the more difficult case of (uniquely) typable terms reveals some interesting open problems about their density and asymptotic behavior. As a connection between the two classes of terms, we also show that uniquely typable closed lambda term skeletons of size 3n+13n+1 are in a bijection with binary trees of size nn.Comment: Pre-proceedings paper presented at the 27th International Symposium on Logic-Based Program Synthesis and Transformation (LOPSTR 2017), Namur, Belgium, 10-12 October 2017 (arXiv:1708.07854

Methods and tools supporting urban resilience planning: experiences from Cork, Ireland

To prevent flood disasters, policymakers call for resilient cities which are better able to cope with flood hazards. However, actual adoption of resilience measures in urban planning is still limited, partly because it is not sufficiently clear how and to what extent resilience should and can be enhanced. To develop resilience strategies, information on the current resilience and on the effects of measures should be available. Since cities are complex systems, an assessment of resilience requires the input of different actors. To obtain and combine this input, a comprehensive approach which brings together many actors is required. Furthermore, resilience must be integrated in planning frameworks in order to enhance adoption by city policy makers. Tools which support and structure the contribution of different disciplines and actors will help to obtain information on the current resilience and to develop a shared vision on measures to enhance urban resilience. We illustrate our view with an example on Cork, Ireland
