COM2008-57717 NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF BEARING CAPASITY OF SUCTION CAISSON
ABSTRACT This paper presents a finite element modeling for determination of bearing capacity of a suction caisson subjected to vertical uplift loading. The approach looks at the uplift capacity of the caisson considering a non-uniform cross sectional area to account for a geometry optimization. For this purpose, the numerical simulation is first verified using available data from other research work especially centrifuge data. Parametric studies are then performed to investigate the role of influencing factors including taper angel. The results show that the bearing capacity of caisson increases with increasing the taper angle
Sialic acid receptor detection in the human respiratory tract: evidence for widespread distribution of potential binding sites for human and avian influenza viruses
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Influenza virus binds to cell receptors via sialic acid (SA) linked glycoproteins. They recognize SA on host cells through their haemagglutinins (H). The distribution of SA on cell surfaces is one determinant of host tropism and understanding its expression on human cells and tissues is important for understanding influenza pathogenesis. The objective of this study therefore was to optimize the detection of α2,3-linked and α2,6-linked SA by lectin histochemistry by investigating the binding of Sambucus nigra agglutinin (SNA) for SAα2,6Gal and Maackia amurensis agglutinin (MAA) for SAα2,3Gal in the respiratory tract of normal adults and children.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used fluorescent and biotinylated SNA and MAA from different suppliers on archived and prospectively collected biopsy and autopsy specimens from the nasopharynx, trachea, bronchus and lungs of fetuses, infants and adults. We compared different methods of unmasking for tissue sections to determine if these would affect lectin binding. Using serial sections we then compared the lectin binding of MAA from different suppliers.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that unmasking using microwave treatment in citrate buffer produced increased lectin binding to the ciliated and glandular epithelium of the respiratory tract. In addition we found that there were differences in tissue distribution of the α2,3 linked SA when 2 different isoforms of MAA (MAA1 and MAA2) lectin were used. MAA1 had widespread binding throughout the upper and lower respiratory tract and showed more binding to the respiratory epithelium of children than in adults. By comparison, MAA2 binding was mainly restricted to the alveolar epithelial cells of the lung with weak binding to goblet cells. SNA binding was detected in bronchial and alveolar epithelial cells and binding of this lectin was stronger to the paediatric epithelium compared to adult epithelium. Furthermore, the MAA lectins from 2 suppliers (Roche and EY Labs) tended to only bind in a pattern similar to MAA1 (Vector Labs) and produced a different binding pattern to MAA2 from Vector Labs.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The lectin binding pattern of MAA may vary depending on the supplier and the different isoforms of MAA show a different tissue distribution in the respiratory tract. This finding is important if conclusions about the potential binding sites of SAα2,3 binding viruses, such as influenza or human parainfluenza are to be made.</p
Slip-Flow and Heat Transfer of a Non-Newtonian Nanofluid in a Microtube
The slip-flow and heat transfer of a non-Newtonian nanofluid in a microtube is theoretically studied. The power-law rheology is adopted to describe the non-Newtonian characteristics of the flow, in which the fluid consistency coefficient and the flow behavior index depend on the nanoparticle volume fraction. The velocity profile, volumetric flow rate and local Nusselt number are calculated for different values of nanoparticle volume fraction and slip length. The results show that the influence of nanoparticle volume fraction on the flow of the nanofluid depends on the pressure gradient, which is quite different from that of the Newtonian nanofluid. Increase of the nanoparticle volume fraction has the effect to impede the flow at a small pressure gradient, but it changes to facilitate the flow when the pressure gradient is large enough. This remarkable phenomenon is observed when the tube radius shrinks to micrometer scale. On the other hand, we find that increase of the slip length always results in larger flow rate of the nanofluid. Furthermore, the heat transfer rate of the nanofluid in the microtube can be enhanced due to the non-Newtonian rheology and slip boundary effects. The thermally fully developed heat transfer rate under constant wall temperature and constant heat flux boundary conditions is also compared

Ocjena i usporedba respiratornih simptoma i kapaciteta pluća u radnika tvornice keramičkih pločica iz Yazda u Iranu
Tile workers are exposed to dust particles and are susceptible to multiple pulmonary complications. Problems like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary symptoms, and silicosis are more common among them. As there are many tile factories in Yazd, we decided to evaluate the respiratory symptoms and lung capacities in these workers and compare them with controls. This study included 176 tile and ceramic factory workers occupationally exposed to dust and 115 unexposed workers as controls. We recorded the respiratory symptoms using the British Medical Research Council questionnaire and measured lung capacities of the two groups. All study subjects were male, and the two groups were comparable in age and smoking. The exposed group had frequent respiratory symptoms and a significant relationship between them and duration of employment. In addition, lung capacities in ceramic workers with symptoms were lower than in workers without the symptoms. Even though the respiratory symptoms were more frequent in the exposed group than in controls, lung capacities of the two groups were similar.Radnici u proizvodnji keramičkih pločica izloženi su česticama prašine te su skloni višestrukim plućnim komplikacijama. U njih je veća učestalost tegoba poput astme i simptoma kronične opstruktivne bolesti pluća te silikoze. Budući da u Yazdu ima mnogo tvornica keramike, odlučili smo upravo u tome gradu ocijeniti respiratorne simptome i izmjeriti kapacitet pluća njihovih radnika i usporediti ih s kontrolnom skupinom. Ispitivanje je stoga obuhvatilo 176 radnika u proizvodnji keramičkih pločica izloženih prašini te 115 neizloženih radnika koji su činili kontrolnu skupinu. Respiratorni su se simptomi ispitali rabeći upitnik Britanskoga savjeta za medicinska istraživanja (British Medical Research Council), a u obje je skupine izmjeren kapacitet pluća. Svi su ispitanici bili muškarci, a skupine su se podudarale po dobi i pušenju. Respiratorni simptomi bili su česti u izloženoj skupini te je u njoj uočena značajna povezanost između respiratornih simptoma i radnoga staža u tvornici. Usto su izloženi radnici s respiratornim simptomima iskazali slabije kapacitete pluća od radnika bez simptoma. Ovi su respiratorni simptomi bili češći u izloženoj skupini negoli u kontrolnoj, ali se njihovi kapaciteti pluća nisu bitno razlikovali

THE INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECTS OF LIME PROPERTIES AND THE MANNER OF COMBINATION ON STABILIZATION OF EXPANSIVE SOILS
Expansive soils are generally found in many parts of the world, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. Because of the ability of volumetric changes in response to seasonal fluctuations of moisture content, these soils are known as a harmful phenomenon in geotechnical engineering. Such soils swell when the moisture content is increased and shrink when the moisture content is decreased. Consequently, expansive soils cause detrimental damage to the structures founded on them. Clay soil can be stabilized by the addition of small percentages, by weight, of lime, thereby enhancing many of the engineering properties of the soil and producing an improved construction material.In this study, in order to find an optimum percentage of the lime to stabilization of expansive soil, the expansive soil was stabilized with various amounts of dolomite quick lime. Next, in order to find the effective type of lime to reduce the swelling potential, the expansive soil was stabilized with two types of lime such as Dolomite lime and Calcite lime that are used as quick lime and hydrated lime. Finally, in the last step, the soil was stabilized with lime by different methods to find the best method of adding lime to the soil.The results show that the optimum percentage of adding lime is 3\% of the total weight of expansive soil. However, the results indicate that the use of calcite quick lime shows a lower free swell, but a higher swelling pressure than the use of dolomite quick lime. It is also expressed that stabilization of expansive soils with hydrated lime has higher free swell and lower swelling pressure, in comparison to the stabilization with quick lime. The experimental results also show that adding lime in the optimum moisture of soil is the most effective method of stabilization of expansive soil
