Raman Scattering and Anomalous Current Algebra: Observation of Chiral Bound State in Mott Insulators
Recent experiments on inelastic light scattering in a number of insulating
cuprates [1] revealed a new excitation appearing in the case of crossed
polarizations just below the optical absorption threshold. This observation
suggests that there exists a local exciton-like state with an odd parity with
respect to a spatial reflection. We present the theory of high energy large
shift Raman scattering in Mott insulators and interpret the experiment [1] as
an evidence of a chiral bound state of a hole and a doubly occupied site with a
topological magnetic excitation. A formation of these composites is a crucial
feature of various topological mechanisms of superconductivity. We show that
inelastic light scattering provides an instrument for direct measurements of a
local chirality and anomalous terms in the electronic current algebra.Comment: 18 pages, TeX, C Version 3.
Raman Response in Doped Antiferromagnets
The resonant part of the electronic Raman scattering response is
calculated within the model on a planar lattice as a function of
temperature and hole doping, using a finite-temperature diagonalization method
for small systems. Results, directly applicable to experiments on cuprates,
reveal on doping a very pronounced increase of the width of the two-magnon
Raman peak, accompanied by a decrease of the total intensity. At the same time

Mean value coordinates–based caricature and expression synthesis
We present a novel method for caricature synthesis based on mean value coordinates (MVC). Our method can be applied to any single frontal face image to learn a specified caricature face pair for frontal and 3D caricature synthesis. This technique only requires one or a small number of exemplar pairs and a natural frontal face image training set, while the system can transfer the style of the exemplar pair across individuals. Further exaggeration can be fulfilled in a controllable way. Our method is further applied to facial expression transfer, interpolation, and exaggeration, which are applications of expression editing. Additionally, we have extended our approach to 3D caricature synthesis based on the 3D version of MVC. With experiments we demonstrate that the transferred expressions are credible and the resulting caricatures can be characterized and recognized
Influence of oxygen ordering kinetics on Raman and optical response in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.4}
Kinetics of the optical and Raman response in YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.4} were studied
during room temperature annealing following heat treatment. The superconducting
T_c, dc resistivity, and low-energy optical conductivity recover slowly,
implying a long relaxation time for the carrier density. Short relaxation times
are observed for the B_{1g} Raman scattering -- magnetic, continuum, and phonon
-- and the charge transfer band. Monte Carlo simulations suggest that these two
relaxation rates are related to two length scales corresponding to local oxygen

Examining the relationship between measures of autistic traits and neural synchrony during movies in children with and without autism
Children who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often show a marked deficit in measures of social cognition. In autistic adults, measures of social cognition have been shown to relate to differences in brain synchronization (as measured by fMRI) when individuals are processing naturalistic stimuli, such as movies. However, whether children who differ in their degree of autistic traits, with or without a diagnosis of ASD, differ in their neural responses to movies has not yet been investigated. In the current study, neural synchrony, measured using fMRI, was examined in three groups of children aged 7 to 12, who differed with respect to scores on a measure of autistic traits associated with social impairment and whether or not they had been diagnosed with ASD. While watching the movie ‘Despicable Me’, those diagnosed with ASD had significantly less neural synchrony in areas that have been previously shown to be associated with social cognition (e.g. areas related to ‘theory of mind’), and plot following (e.g. the lateral prefrontal cortex), than those who did not have an ASD diagnosis. In contrast, two groups who differed in their degree of autistic traits, but did not have a diagnosis of ASD, showed no significant differences in neural synchrony across the whole brain. These results shed some light on how autistic traits may contribute to an individual\u27s conscious experience of the world, and how, for children with ASD, that experience may differ markedly from that of those without ASD
Not Just Asking Questions: Effects of Implicit and Explicit Conspiracy Information About Vaccines and Genetic Modification

The final version is available from Taylor & Francis (Routledge) via the DOI in this record.While conspiracy ideation has attracted overdue attention from social scientists in recent years, little work focuses on how different pro-conspiracy messages affect the take-up of conspiracy beliefs. In this study, we compare the effect of explicit and implicit conspiracy cues on the adoption of conspiracy beliefs. We also examine whether corrective information can undo conspiracy cues, and whether there are differences in the effectiveness of corrective information based on whether a respondent received an explicit or implicit conspiracy cue. We examine these questions using a real-world but low-salience conspiracy theory concerning Zika, GM mosquitoes, and vaccines. Using a preregistered experiment (N = 1018: https://osf.io/hj2pw/), we find that both explicit and implicit conspiracy cues increase conspiracy beliefs, but in both cases corrections are generally effective. We also find reception of an explicit conspiracy cue and its correction is conditional on feelings toward the media and pharmaceutical companies. Finally, we find that examining open-ended conspiracy belief items reveals similar patterns, but with a few key differences. These findings have implications for how news media cover controversial public health issues going forward.European Research Counci
DNA adducts in fish following an oil spill exposure
On 12 December 1999, one third of the load of the Erika tanker, amounting to about 10,000 t crude oil flowed into sea waters close to the French Atlantic Coast. This oil contained polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) that are known to be genotoxic. Genotoxic effects induce DNA adducts formation, which can thus be used as pollution biomarkers. Here, we assessed the genotoxic impact of the “Erika” oil spill by DNA adducts detection in the liver of immature fishes (Solea solea) from four locations of the French Brittany coasts. Two months after the spill, a high amount of DNA adducts was found in samples from all locations, amounting to 92–290 DNA adduct per 109 nucleotides. Then total DNA adduct levels decreased to reach about 50 adducts per 109 nucleotides nine months after the spill. In vitro experiments using human cell cultures and fish liver microsomes evidence the genotoxicity of the Erika fuel. They also prove the formation of reactive species able to create DNA adducts. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo DNA adducts fingerprints are similar, thus confirming that DNA adducts are a result of the oil spill
Resonant Two-Magnon Raman Scattering in Cuprate Antiferromagnetic Insulators
We present results of low-temperature two-magnon resonance Raman excitation
profile measurements for single layer Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 and bilayer YBa_2Cu_3O_{6 +
\delta} antiferromagnets over the excitation region from 1.65 to 3.05 eV. These
data reveal composite structure of the two-magnon line shape and strong
nonmonotic dependence of the scattering intensity on excitation energy. We
analyze these data using the triple resonance theory of Chubukov and Frenkel
(Phys. Rev. Lett., 74, 3057 (1995)) and deduce information about magnetic
