Correlated radial velocity and X-ray variations in HD 154791/4U 1700+24
We present evidence for approximately 400-d variations in the radial velocity
of HD 154791 (V934 Her), the suggested optical counterpart of 4U 1700+24. The
variations are correlated with the previously reported approximately 400 d
variations in the X-ray flux of 4U 1700+24, which supports the association of
these two objects, as well as the identification of this system as the second
known X-ray binary in which a neutron star accretes from the wind of a red
giant. The HD 154791 radial velocity variations can be fit with an eccentric
orbit with period 404 +/- 3 d, amplitude K=0.75 +/- 0.12 km/s and eccentricity
e=0.26 +/- 0.15. There are also indications of variations on longer time scales
>~ 2000 d. We have re-examined all available ASM data following an unusually
large X-ray outburst in 1997-98, and confirm that the 1-d averaged 2-10 keV
X-ray flux from 4U 1700+24 is modulated with a period of 400 +/- 20 d. The mean
profile of the persistent X-ray variations was approximately sinusoidal, with
an amplitude of 0.108 +/- 0.012 ASM count/s (corresponding to 31% rms). The
epoch of X-ray maximum was approximately 40 d after the time of periastron
according to the eccentric orbital fit. If the 400 d oscillations from HD
154791/4U 1700+24 are due to orbital motion, then the system parameters are
probably close to those of the only other neutron-star symbiotic-like binary,

Early Duplication of a Single MHC IIB Locus Prior to the Passerine Radiations.
A key characteristic of MHC genes is the persistence of allelic lineages over macroevolutionary periods, often through multiple speciation events. This phenomenon, known as trans-species polymorphism (TSP), is well documented in several major taxonomic groups, but has less frequently been observed in birds. The order Passeriformes is arguably the most successful terrestrial vertebrate order in terms of diversity of species and ecological range, but the reasons for this success remain unclear. Passerines exhibit the most highly duplicated MHC genes of any major vertebrate taxonomic group, which may generate increased immune response relative to other avian orders with fewer MHC loci. Here, we describe phylogenetic patterns of the MHC IIB in the passerine family Corvidae. Our results indicate wide-spread TSP within this family, with at least four supported MHC IIB allelic lineages that predate speciation by many millions of years. Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations indicate that divergence of these lineages occurred near the time of the divergence of the Passeriformes and other avian orders. We suggest that the current MHC diversity observed in passerines is due in part to the multiple duplication of a single MHC locus, DAB1, early in passerine evolution and that subsequent duplications of these paralogues have contributed to the enormous success of this order by increasing their ability to recognize and mount immune responses to novel pathogens
An intervention to reduce care‐resistant behavior in persons with dementia during oral hygiene: a pilot study
The primary purpose of this pilot study was to test the feasibility of an intervention designed to reduce care‐resistant behaviors (CRBs) in persons with moderate‐to‐severe dementia during oral hygiene activities.The intervention, Managing Oral Hygiene Using Threat Reduction (MOUTh), combined best oral hygiene practices with CRB reduction techniques. Oral health was operationalized as the total score obtained from the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT). CRB was measured using a refinement of the Resistiveness to Care Scale. Seven nursing home residents with dementia received twice daily mouth care for 14 days. The baseline OHAT mean score of 7.29 (SD = 1.25) improved to 1.00 (SD = 1.26, p < .001); CRB improved from 2.43 CRBs/minute (SD = 4.26) to 1.09 CRBs/minute (SD = 1.56, t = 1.97, df 41, p= .06).The findings from this pilot study suggest that the MOUTh intervention is feasible and reduced CRBs, thus allowing more effective oral care.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/110640/1/j.1754-4505.2011.00190.x.pd
Reducing care-resistant behaviors during oral hygiene in persons with dementia
Abstract
Background
Nursing home residents with dementia are often dependent on others for mouth care, yet will react with care-resistant behavior when receiving assistance. The oral health of these elders deteriorates in the absence of daily oral hygiene, predisposing them to harmful systemic problems such as pneumonia, hyperglycemia, cardiac disease, and cerebral vascular accidents. The purpose of this study is to determine whether care-resistant behaviors can be reduced, and oral health improved, through the application of an intervention based on the neurobiological principles of threat perception and fear response. The intervention, called Managing Oral Hygiene Using Threat Reduction, combines best mouth care practices with a constellation of behavioral techniques that reduce threat perception and thereby prevent or de-escalate care-resistant behaviors.
Methods/Design
Using a randomized repeated measures design, 80 elders with dementia from 5 different nursing homes will be randomized at the individual level to the experimental group, which will receive the intervention, or to the control group, which will receive standard mouth care from research team members who receive training in the proper methods for providing mouth care but no training in resistance recognition or prevention/mediation. Oral health assessments and care-resistant behavior measurements will be obtained during a 7-day observation period and a 21-day intervention period. Individual growth models using multilevel analysis will be used to estimate the efficacy of the intervention for reducing care-resistant behaviors in persons with dementia, and to estimate the overall efficacy of the intervention using oral health outcomes. Activity-based costing methods will be used to determine the cost of the proposed intervention.
Discussion
At the conclusion of this study, the research team anticipates having a proven intervention that prevents and reduces care-resistant within the context of mouth care. Long-term objectives include testing the effect of the intervention on systemic illnesses among persons with dementia; examining the transferability of this intervention to other activities of daily living; and disseminating threat reduction interventions to nursing home staff, which may radically change the manner in which care is provided to persons with dementia.

The Dwarf Novae of Shortest Period
We present observations of the dwarf novae GW Lib, V844 Her, and DI UMa.
Radial velocities of H-alph yield orbital periods of 0.05332 +- 0.00002 d (=
76.78 m) for GW Lib and and 0.054643 +- 0.000007 d (= 78.69 m) for V844 Her.
Recently, the orbital period of DI UMa was found to be only 0.054564 +-
0.000002 d (= 78.57 m) by Fried et al. (1999), so these are the three shortest
orbital periods among dwarf novae with normal-abundance secondaries.
GW Lib has attracted attention as a cataclysmic binary showing apparent ZZ
Ceti-type pulsations of the white dwarf primary. Its spectrum shows sharp
Balmer emission flanked by strong, broad Balmer absorption, indicating a
dominant contribution by white-dwarf light. Analysis of the Balmer absorption
profiles is complicated by the unknown residual accretion luminosity and lack
of coverage of the high Balmer lines. Our best-fit model atmospheres are
marginally hotter than the ZZ Ceti instability strip, in rough agreement with
recent ultraviolet results from HST. The spectrum and outburst behavior of GW
Lib make it a near twin of WZ Sge, and we estimate it to have a quiescent V
absolute magnitude 12. Comparison with archival data reveals proper motion of
65 +- 12 mas/yr.
The mean spectrum of V844 Her is typical of SU UMa dwarf novae. We detected
superhumps in the 1997 May superoutburst with superhump period = 0.05597 +-
0.00005 d. The spectrum of DI UMa appears normal for a dwarf nova near minimum
light.
These three dwarf novae have nearly identical short periods but completely
dissimilar outburst characteristics. We discuss possible implications.Comment: Accepted for publication in Publications of the Astronomical Society

Discovery of optical pulsations in V2116 Ophiuchi/GX 1+4
We report the detection of pulsations with s period in V2116 Oph,
the optical counterpart of the low-mass X-ray binary GX 1+4. The pulsations are
sinusoidal with modulation amplitude of up to 4% in blue light and were
observed in ten different observing sessions during 1996 April-August using a
CCD photometer at the 1.6-m and 0.6-m telescopes of Laborat\'orio Nacional de
Astrof\'{\i}sica, in Brazil. The pulsations were also observed with the
fast photometer. With only one exception the observed optical periods are
consistent with those observed by the BATSE instrument on board the Compton
Gamma Ray Observatory at the same epoch. There is a definite correlation
between the observability of pulsations and the optical brightness of the
system: V2116~Oph had magnitude in the range when the pulsed
signal was detected, and when no pulsations were present. The
discovery makes GX 1+4 only the third of accretion-powered X-ray
pulsars to be firmly detected as a pulsating source in the optical. The
presence of flickering and pulsations in V2116 Oph adds strong evidence for an
accretion disk scenario in this system. The absolute magnitude of the pulsed
component on 1996 May 27 is estimated to be . The implied
dimensions for the emitting region are 1.1 R_{\sun}, 3.2 R_{\sun}, and 7.0

Revised ephemeris and orbital period derivative of the supersoft X-ray source CAL 87 based on 34 years of observations
In this study, we present an analysis of over 34 years of observational data
from CAL 87, an eclipsing supersoft X-ray source. The primary aim of our study,
which combines previously analysed measurements as well as unexplored publicly
available datasets, is to examine the orbital period evolution of CAL 87. After
meticulously and consistently determining the eclipse timings, we constructed
an OC (observed minus calculated) diagram using a total of 38 data points.
Our results provide confirmation of a positive derivative in the system's
orbital period, with a determined value of s/s. We observe a noticeable jitter in the eclipse
timings and additionally identify a systematic delay in the X-ray eclipses
compared to those observed in longer wavelengths. We discuss the interplay of
the pertinent factors that could contribute to a positive period derivative and

The Optical System for the Large Size Telescope of the Cherenkov Telescope Array
The Large Size Telescope (LST) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is
designed to achieve a threshold energy of 20 GeV. The LST optics is composed of
one parabolic primary mirror 23 m in diameter and 28 m focal length. The
reflector dish is segmented in 198 hexagonal, 1.51 m flat to flat mirrors. The
total effective reflective area, taking into account the shadow of the
mechanical structure, is about 368 m. The mirrors have a sandwich structure
consisting of a glass sheet of 2.7 mm thickness, aluminum honeycomb of 60 mm
thickness, and another glass sheet on the rear, and have a total weight about
47 kg. The mirror surface is produced using a sputtering deposition technique
to apply a 5-layer coating, and the mirrors reach a reflectivity of 94%
at peak. The mirror facets are actively aligned during operations by an active
mirror control system, using actuators, CMOS cameras and a reference laser.
Each mirror facet carries a CMOS camera, which measures the position of the
light spot of the optical axis reference laser on the target of the telescope
camera. The two actuators and the universal joint of each mirror facet are
respectively fixed to three neighboring joints of the dish space frame, via

Evolution of spectral function in a doped Mott insulator : surface vs. bulk contributions
We study the evolution of the spectral function with progressive hole doping
in a Mott insulator, with = 0.0 - 0.5. The spectral
features indicate a bulk-to-surface metal-insulator transition in this system.
Doping dependent changes in the bulk electronic structure are shown to be
incompatible with existing theoretical predictions. An empirical description
based on the single parameter, , is shown to describe consistently the

Focused Solar Ablation: A Nanosat-Based Method for Active Removal of Space Debris
A novel concept for the active removal of space debris using solar power is proposed. Focused solar ablation is an in-space propulsion concept based on using concentrator mirrors on nanosats and using the solar power to evaporate material from the debris to produce deceleration thrust thereby providing the ∆V necessary to deorbit. An energy balance is used along with free-molecular effusion theory to estimate the thrust produced by the concept and the corresponding deorbit times for an aluminum debris masses of 10 kg and 0.27 kg for various concentrator mirror areas and the diameter of the spot on which the solar power is concentrated. The analysis shows that the deorbit times of a few hours for both masses showing that the method is attractive for active space debris removal. Experiments performed using electron beams to evaporate aluminum in a vacuum chamber show that the method is also practically feasible to deorbit space debris using solar power available in low earth orbit (LEO)
