    On spherical averages of radial basis functions

    A radial basis function (RBF) has the general form s(x)=k=1nakϕ(xbk),xRd,s(x)=\sum_{k=1}^{n}a_{k}\phi(x-b_{k}),\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^{d}, where the coefficients a 1,…,a n are real numbers, the points, or centres, b 1,…,b n lie in ℝ d , and φ:ℝ d →ℝ is a radially symmetric function. Such approximants are highly useful and enjoy rich theoretical properties; see, for instance (Buhmann, Radial Basis Functions: Theory and Implementations, [2003]; Fasshauer, Meshfree Approximation Methods with Matlab, [2007]; Light and Cheney, A Course in Approximation Theory, [2000]; or Wendland, Scattered Data Approximation, [2004]). The important special case of polyharmonic splines results when φ is the fundamental solution of the iterated Laplacian operator, and this class includes the Euclidean norm φ(x)=‖x‖ when d is an odd positive integer, the thin plate spline φ(x)=‖x‖2log  ‖x‖ when d is an even positive integer, and univariate splines. Now B-splines generate a compactly supported basis for univariate spline spaces, but an analyticity argument implies that a nontrivial polyharmonic spline generated by (1.1) cannot be compactly supported when d>1. However, a pioneering paper of Jackson (Constr. Approx. 4:243–264, [1988]) established that the spherical average of a radial basis function generated by the Euclidean norm can be compactly supported when the centres and coefficients satisfy certain moment conditions; Jackson then used this compactly supported spherical average to construct approximate identities, with which he was then able to derive some of the earliest uniform convergence results for a class of radial basis functions. Our work extends this earlier analysis, but our technique is entirely novel, and applies to all polyharmonic splines. Furthermore, we observe that the technique provides yet another way to generate compactly supported, radially symmetric, positive definite functions. Specifically, we find that the spherical averaging operator commutes with the Fourier transform operator, and we are then able to identify Fourier transforms of compactly supported functions using the Paley–Wiener theorem. Furthermore, the use of Haar measure on compact Lie groups would not have occurred without frequent exposure to Iserles’s study of geometric integration

    On the spectral distribution of kernel matrices related to\ud radial basis functions

    This paper focuses on the spectral distribution of kernel matrices related to radial basis functions. The asymptotic behaviour of eigenvalues of kernel matrices related to radial basis functions with different smoothness are studied. These results are obtained by estimated the coefficients of an orthogonal expansion of the underlying kernel function. Beside many other results, we prove that there are exactly (k+d−1/d-1) eigenvalues in the same order for analytic separable kernel functions like the Gaussian in Rd. This gives theoretical support for how to choose the diagonal scaling matrix in the RBF-QR method (Fornberg et al, SIAM J. Sci. Comput. (33), 2011) which can stably compute Gaussian radial basis function interpolants

    Half-tapering strategy for conditional simulation with large datasets

    Gaussian conditional realizations are routinely used for risk assessment and planning in a variety of Earth sciences applications. Conditional realizations can be obtained by first creating unconditional realizations that are then post-conditioned by kriging. Many efficient algorithms are available for the first step, so the bottleneck resides in the second step. Instead of doing the conditional simulations with the desired covariance (F approach) or with a tapered covariance (T approach), we propose to use the taper covariance only in the conditioning step (Half-Taper or HT approach). This enables to speed up the computations and to reduce memory requirements for the conditioning step but also to keep the right short scale variations in the realizations. A criterion based on mean square error of the simulation is derived to help anticipate the similarity of HT to F. Moreover, an index is used to predict the sparsity of the kriging matrix for the conditioning step. Some guides for the choice of the taper function are discussed. The distributions of a series of 1D, 2D and 3D scalar response functions are compared for F, T and HT approaches.     One-Step Recurrences for Stationary Random Fields on the Sphere

    Recurrences for positive definite functions in terms of the space dimension have been used in several fields of applications. Such recurrences typically relate to properties of the system of special functions characterizing the geometry of the underlying space. In the case of the sphere Sd1Rd{\mathbb S}^{d-1} \subset {\mathbb R}^d the (strict) positive definiteness of the zonal function f(cosθ)f(\cos \theta) is determined by the signs of the coefficients in the expansion of ff in terms of the Gegenbauer polynomials {Cnλ}\{C^\lambda_n\}, with λ=(d2)/2\lambda=(d-2)/2. Recent results show that classical differentiation and integration applied to ff have positive definiteness preserving properties in this context. However, in these results the space dimension changes in steps of two. This paper develops operators for zonal functions on the sphere which preserve (strict) positive definiteness while moving up and down in the ladder of dimensions by steps of one. These fractional operators are constructed to act appropriately on the Gegenbauer polynomials {Cnλ}\{C^\lambda_n\}

    The Socialist Education of Rita Seidel: The Dialectics of Humanism and Authoritarianism in Christa Wolf\u27s \u3cem\u3eDer geteilte Himmel\u3c/em\u3e

    When Christa Wolf\u27s first novel Der geteilte Himmel was published in 1963, it precipitated within the GDR a flurry of varied and differing critical comment quite unusual for that country. The main controversy centered on the ideological message of the work which, according to some, was too vague and did not sufficiently extol the advantages of socialism in the GDR nor properly emphasize the leadership role of the Communist Party. Others retorted that it was just this subjective lyrical quality which distinguished the book from the uninspired Aufbauliteratur of the ’50s in which there had been a plethora of socialist heroes only too willing to recite Marxist-Leninist slogans. Critics in the West have concurred that the novel\u27s concept of socialism is indeed a bit vague, while some, especially Western Marxists, have tried to save the work by emphasizing the role played by the world of labor in the socialist education of the heroine Rita Seidel. This paper attempts to give at least a partial answer to the question of the novel\u27s ideology by concentrating on this socialist education, specifically on the educators or mentors who are responsible for it
