Validity of common ultrasound methods of fetal weight estimation in late pregnancy among women in Kwale, Niger Delta region, Nigeria.
Background: Accuracy of some ultrasound equations used in our locality for fetal weight estimation is doubtful. Objective: To assess the accuracy of common ultrasound equations used for fetal weight estimation.Subjects and Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted on selected Nigerian obstetric population at Central Hospital, Kwale between March, 2009 and January, 2011. Sonography was performed on 412 women with advanced singleton cyesis and measurements of BPD, HC, AC, and FL were obtained and figured into 12 common ultrasound equations for the estimation of fetal weight. The actual birth weight at delivery was recorded. Results: The highest intraclass correlation coefficient was generated by the Hadlock 5 and Hsieh 2 equations. The least mean absolute percent error was obtained with Hsieh 2 equation, followed by Woo 3, and Hadlock 5. These equations also had the least percentage error and the least range of limits of agreement in the same order with no significant difference between their mean fetal weight estimates and that of the actual birth weight (p > 0.05). All twelve equations had strong positive correlation with the actual birth weight with Nzeh 2 equation the least. Conclusion: Hsieh 2 equation has the best accuracy in fetal weight estimation studied.Key Words: Validation; Fetal Weight; Sonography; Advanced Cyesis; Nigerian Populatio
Ganglioneuroma Always A Histopathological Diagnosis
Neuroblastoma, ganglioneuroblastoma and ganglioneuroma arise from sympathetic tissue in the neck, posterior mediastinum, adrenal gland, retroperitoneum and pelvis Ganglioneuromas are commonly seen in childhood. They are highly differentiated benign tumors and are compatible with long-term disease free survival. Retroperitoneal localization is relatively frequent for these tumors. Due to its rarity and lack of specific radiological findings diagnosis is always postoperative. Here, we present a case of Retroperitoneal ganglioneuroma which was undiagnosed before surgery
Different distance measures for fuzzy linear regression with Monte Carlo methods
The aim of this study was to determine the best distance measure for estimating the fuzzy linear regression model parameters with Monte Carlo (MC) methods. It is pointed out that only one distance measure is used for fuzzy linear regression with MC methods within the literature. Therefore, three different definitions of distance measure between two fuzzy numbers are introduced. Estimation accuracies of existing and proposed distance measures are explored with the simulation study. Distance measures are compared to each other in terms of estimation accuracy; hence this study demonstrates that the best distance measures to estimate fuzzy linear regression model parameters with MC methods are the distance measures defined by Kaufmann and Gupta (Introduction to fuzzy arithmetic theory and applications. Van Nostrand Reinhold, New York, 1991), Heilpern-2 (Fuzzy Sets Syst 91(2):259–268, 1997) and Chen and Hsieh (Aust J Intell Inf Process Syst 6(4):217–229, 2000). One the other hand, the worst distance measure is the distance measure used by Abdalla and Buckley (Soft Comput 11:991–996, 2007; Soft Comput 12:463–468, 2008). These results would be useful to enrich the studies that have already focused on fuzzy linear regression models

Bulletin of Volcanology, 77, 11. doi:10.1007/s00445-014-0892-9Phreatomagmatic activity is pervasive in the Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF) with more than two thirds of
the erupted volcanoes showing this type of activity at different degrees, dominantly at the onset of their
eruptive histories. In general, the volcanoes built in the northern AVF rest on Late Miocene Waitemata
Group rocks (turbiditic siltstone and sandstone succession), whereas in the southern AVF the Waitemata
rocks are overlain by tens of metres of Plio-Pleistocene, water-saturated sediments (Tauranga Group and
Kaawa Formation). Identifying the control exerted by the type of substrate in the eruption dynamics of the
phreatomagmatic phases of three volcanoes in the AVF is the objective of this study. The stratigraphic,
sedimentary, and pyroclast characteristics of the phreatomagmatic sequences of Maungataketake,
Motukorea, and North Head volcanoes, together with supplementary information on the geology and
hydrogeology of the area, were investigated to solve the problem. Three phreatomagmatic eruptive
scenarios were outlined. Scenario 1 (Maungataketake eruption) and Scenario 2 (Motukorea eruption)
depict the formation of maar-diatreme volcanoes in the southern and northern AVF, respectively. The
dominant presence of lithics from the upper part of the substrate in their tephra rings suggests the
construction of their tephra rings from shallow-seated explosions. Due to the water-saturated sediments
filling the diatreme in Scenario 1, the eruption appears to have remained relatively wet throughout.
Conversely, the drier Waitemata rocks involved in Scenario 2 promoted a progressive drying of the
eruption. Scenario 3 (North Head eruption) represents a Surtseyan eruption scenario in which the rising
magma erupted to the shallow sea floor (a few metres-water depth), promoting rapid chilling and explosive
fragmentation. This study shows that the characterization of lithics within the tephra ring and the
geological and hydrogeological information provide valuable clues to envisage the degree of influence of
the substrate in the phreatomagmatic eruption dynamics. Other studies in the AVF appear to confirm this
view. It is proposed that any future phreatomagmatic eruption in the AVF will be strongly influenced by the
substrate hydrogeology and geology, as well as the surface hydrological conditions
A Note About Claw Function with a Small Range
In the claw detection problem we are given two functions f:D ? R and g:D ? R (|D| = n, |R| = k), and we have to determine if there is exist x,y ? D such that f(x) = g(y). We show that the quantum query complexity of this problem is between ?(n^{1/2}k^{1/6}) and O(n^{1/2+?}k^{1/4}) when 2 ? k < n
Height one specializations of Selmer groups
We provide applications to studying the behavior of Selmer groups under
specialization. We consider Selmer groups associated to four dimensional Galois
representations coming from (i) the tensor product of two cuspidal Hida
families and , (ii) its cyclotomic deformation, (iii) the tensor product
of a cusp form and the Hida family , where is a classical
specialization of with weight . We prove control theorems to
relate (a) the Selmer group associated to the tensor product of Hida families
and to the Selmer group associated to its cyclotomic deformation and
(b) the Selmer group associated to the tensor product of and to the
Selmer group associated to the tensor product of and . On the analytic
side of the main conjectures, Hida has constructed one variable, two variable
and three variable Rankin-Selberg -adic -functions. Our specialization
results enable us to verify that Hida's results relating (a) the two variable
-adic -function to the three variable -adic -function and (b) the
one variable -adic -function to the two variable -adic -function
and our control theorems for Selmer groups are completely consistent with the
main conjectures.Comment: Incorporated changes suggested by the referee. Accepted for
