    Accumulation and Circulation of the Knowledge Needed for Biotech Business Promotion by Engineers of R&D Section in an IT Enterprise: the Case of Hitachi Software Engineering Co., Ltd

    Much research has been carried out on the accumulation and effective use of knowledge as a company-specific form of intellectual property. However, insufficient attention has been given to research focusing on the effects of micro-level knowledge absorption and its effective use. In this paper, we try to demonstrate what should be done in order to promote new biotech business from the perspective of each engineer\u27s knowledge, through a micro-level investigation focusing on the life science business section of one IT enterprise. Based on the results of a questionnaire survey of engineers, interviews of several engineers, and patent data analysis, we discuss the progress of the biotech business in an IT enterprise from the aspect of accumulation and circulation of knowledge in a core technology field, the IT business, and a technology field of new entry, the biotech business. This paper reports that the positive growth cycle of biotech business promotion in an IT enterprise, using Hitachi Software Engineering Co., Ltd. as a case, attained by incorporating the latest biotech knowledge from junior engineers and utilizing IT knowledge from middle engineers leads to the recruiting of qualified students

    Synthesis, Characterization, and Magnetic Properties of gamma-NaxCoO2 (0.70 < x <0.84)

    Powder Nax_{x}CoO2_{2} (0.70≤x≤0.840.70\leq x\leq 0.84) samples were synthesized and characterized carefully by X-ray diffraction analysis, inductive-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, and redox titration. It was proved that γ\gamma-Nax_{x}CoO2_{2} is formed only in the narrow range of 0.70≤x≤0.780.70\leq x\leq 0.78. Nevertheless, the magnetic properties depend strongly on xx. We found, for the first time, two characteristic features in the magnetic susceptibility of Na0.78_{0.78}CoO2_{2}, a sharp peak at Tp=16T_{p}=16 K and an anomaly at Tk=9T_{k}=9 K, as well as the transition at Tc=22T_{c}=22 K and the broad maximum at Tm=50T_{m}=50 K which had already been reported. A type of weak ferromagnetic transition seems to occur at TkT_{k}. The transition at TcT_{c}, which is believed to be caused by spin density wave formation, was observed clearly for x≥0.74x\geq 0.74 with constant TcT_{c} and TpT_{p} independent of xx. On the other hand, ferromagnetic moment varies systematically depending on xx. These facts suggest the occurrence of a phase separation at the microscopic level, such as the separation into Na-rich and Na-poor domains due to the segregation of Na ions.     Cobalt-Al2O3-silicon tunnel contacts for electrical spin injection into silicon

    The resistance of Co–Al2O3–Si tunnel contacts for electrical spin injection from a ferromagnet into silicon is investigated. The contacts form a substantial Schottky barrier, 0.7 eV, which plays a dominant role in the electronic transport. On Si with a low doping concentration ( ∼ 1015 cm−3), the contact resistance is affected by the Al2O3 tunnel barrier only in the forward bias. In the reverse bias (the spin injection condition), the Schottky barrier results in a very high contact resistance, ∼ 102 Ω m2. While the contact resistance is improved to ∼ 10−2 Ω m2 using Si with a high doping concentration ( ∼ 5×1019 cm−3), it is still about five to six orders of magnitude higher than the value needed for resistance matching to silico

    Competition between ferromagnetism and spin glass: the key for large magnetoresistance in oxygen deficient perovskites SrCo1-xMxO3-d (M = Nb, Ru)

    The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of the oxygen deficient perovskites, SrCo1-xMxO3-d with M = Nb and Ru, were investigated. Both Nb- and Ru-substituted cobaltites are weak ferromagnets, with transition temperatures Tm of 130-150 K and 130-180 K, respectively, and both exhibit a spin glass behavior at temperatures below Tf = 80-90 K. It is demonstrated that there exists a strong competition between ferromagnetism and spin glass state, where Co4+ induces ferromagnetism, whereas Nb or Ru substitution at the cobalt sites induces magnetic disorder, and this particular magnetic behavior is the origin of large negative magnetoresistance of these oxides, reaching up to 30% at 5 K in 7 T. The differences between Nb- and Ru-substituted cobaltites are discussed on the basis of the different electronic configuration of niobium and ruthenium cations.Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures, to appear in Phys.     Measurement of electron correlations in LixCoO2 (x=0.0 - 0.35) using 59Co nuclear magnetic resonance and nuclear quadrupole resonance techniques

    CoO2 is the parent compound for the superconductor NaxCoO2\cdot1.3H2O and was widely believed to be a Mott insulator. We performed 59Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on LixCoO2 (x = 0.35, 0.25, 0.12, and 0.0) to uncover the electronic state and spin correlations in this series of compounds which was recently obtained through electrochemical de-intercalation of Li from pristine LiCoO2. We find that although the antiferromagnetic spin correlations systematically increase with decreasing Li-content (x), the end member, CoO2 is a non-correlated metal that well satisfies the Korringa relation for a Fermi liquid. Thus, CoO2 is not simply located at the limit of x->0 for AxCoO2 (A = Li, Na) compounds. The disappearance of the electron correlations in CoO2 is due to the three dimensionality of the compound which is in contrast to the highly two dimensional structure of AxCoO2.Comment: 4pages, 4figures, to be published in Phys.Rev.B.     La relation entre les technologies de l’information (TI), la productivité et la croissance économique a été établie au niveau agrégé. Cependant, les mécanismes par lesquels l’effet se manifeste au niveau de l’entreprise restent à préciser. Les organismes statistiques ont élaboré des indicateurs de l’aptitude des entreprises à utiliser les technologies de l’information (p. ex. l’infrastructure des technologies de l’information, la diffusion de technologies particulières) et certains indicateurs de l’utilisation réelle (p. ex. buts et fréquence d’utilisation). L’étape suivante consiste à produire des estimations de l’impact de l’utilisation des technologies de l’information. Une étude menée récemment par l’OCDE visait à résoudre cette question en utilisant des données agrégées pour les pays membres de l’OCDE, ainsi que des microdonnées pour l’Allemagne et les États‑Unis. Une deuxième phase de l’étude de l’OCDE consistera en une série de projets, regroupant deux ou trois pays, réalisée au moyen de nouvelles microdonnées obtenues récemment pour une douzaine de pays environ. Le présent article décrit l’un de ces projets, destiné à évaluer l’effet des technologies de l’information au Danemark, au Japon et aux États‑Unis. Chacun de ces pays a recueilli récemment de nouvelles données sur l’utilisation des technologies de l’information au niveau de l’entreprise et procédé à l’analyse préliminaire de celles-ci. En outre, chaque pays se distingue des autres par sa structure de marché et sa structure institutionnelle. La prochaine phase du projet consistera à élaborer des estimations de l’effet de l’utilisation des technologies de l’information fondées sur ces nouvelles microdonnées, ainsi qu’à émettre et à tester des hypothèses qui tiennent compte des différences entre les structures de marché et les structures institutionnelles de ces pays.A positive relationship between information technology (IT), productivity, and growth has been established at the aggregate level. What remain unclear are the mechanisms through which the effect operates at the level of specific businesses. Statistical agencies have developed indicators of businesses’ readiness to use IT (e.g. the IT infrastructure, diffusion of specific technologies), and some indicators on actual usage (e.g., purposes, frequency of use). The next phase is using those data to develop estimates of the impact of IT use. A recent study addressed this question using aggregate data for Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, and micro data (data for specific businesses) for Germany and the U.S. A second phase of that study envisions a series of two- and three-country studies making use of newly available micro data for roughly a dozen countries. This paper outlines one such study, a three-country project addressing the impact of IT use in Denmark, Japan, and the U.S. Each country recently collected new data at the level of specific businesses on the use of IT by businesses, and has conducted preliminary analyses of its own data. Each country also has different underlying market and institutional structures. The findings presented here are preliminary. They show that network information technology has a significant impact on labour productivity growth in United States. The next phase of this project will develop estimates of the impact of IT use based on these new micro data, developing and testing hypotheses that acknowledge differences among the countries in market and institutional structures

    New Josephson Plasma Modes in Underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.6 Induced by Parallel Magnetic Field

    The c-axis reflectivity spectrum of underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.6 (YBCO) is measured below Tc=59K in parallel magnetic fields H//CuO2 up to 7T. Upon application of a parallel field, a new peak appears at finite frequency in the optical conductivity at the expense of suppression of c-axis condensate weight. We conclude that the dramatic change originates from different Josephson coupling strengths between bilayers with and without Josephson vortices. We find that the 400cm^-1 broad conductivity peak in YBCO gains the spectral weight under parallel magnetic field; this indicates that the condensate weight at \omega =0 is distributed to the intra-bilayer mode as well as to the new optical Josephson mode.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Bulk antiferromagnetism in Na0.82CoO2\bf Na_{0.82}CoO_2 single crystals

    Susceptibility, specific heat, and muon spin rotation measurements on high-quality single crystals of Na0.82CoO2\rm Na_{0.82}CoO_2 have revealed bulk antiferromagnetism with N\'{e}el temperature TN=19.8±0.1\rm T_N = 19.8 \pm 0.1 K and an ordered moment perpendicular to the CoO2\rm CoO_2 layers. The magnetic order encompasses nearly 100% of the crystal volume. The susceptibility exhibits a broad peak around 30 K, characteristic of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations.     Novel phase diagram of superconductor NaxCoO2-yH2O in a 75 % relative humidity

    We succeeded in synthesizing the powder samples of bilayer-hydrate sodium cobalt oxide superconductors NaxCoO2-yH2O with Tc = 0 ~ 4.6 K by systematically changing the keeping duration in a 75 % relative humidity atmosphere after intercalation of water molecules. From the magnetic measurements, we found that the one-day duration sample does not show any superconductivity down to 1.8 K, and that the samples kept for 2 ~ 7 days show superconductivity, in which Tc increases up to 4.6 K with increasing the duration. Tc and the superconducting volume fraction are almost invariant between 7 days and 1month duration. The 59Co NQR spectra indicate a systematic change in the local charge distribution on the CoO2 plane with change in duration.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Journal of the Physical Society of Japa
