    Quantum Hall Ferromagnetism in a Two-Dimensional Electron System

    Experiments on a nearly spin degenerate two-dimensional electron system reveals unusual hysteretic and relaxational transport in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime. The transition between the spin-polarized (with fill fraction ν=1/3\nu = 1/3) and spin-unpolarized (ν=2/5\nu = 2/5) states is accompanied by a complicated series of hysteresis loops reminiscent of a classical ferromagnet. In correlation with the hysteresis, magnetoresistance can either grow or decay logarithmically in time with remarkable persistence and does not saturate. In contrast to the established models of relaxation, the relaxation rate exhibits an anomalous divergence as temperature is reduced. These results indicate the presence of novel two-dimensional ferromagnetism with a complicated magnetic domain dynamic.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure

    Phenomenological Theory of Superconductivity and Magnetism in Ho1x_{1-x}Dyx_xNi2_2B2_2C

    The coexistence of the superconductivity and magnetism in the Ho1x_{1-x}Dyx_xNi2_2B2_2C is studied by using Ginzburg-Landau theory. This alloy shows the coexistence and complex interplay of superconducting and magnetic order. We propose a phenomenological model which includes two magnetic and two superconducting order parameters accounting for the multi-band structure of this material. We describe phenomenologically the magnetic fluctuations and order and demonstrate that they lead to anomalous behavior of the upper critical field. The doping dependence of TcT_c in Ho1x_{1-x}Dyx_xNi2_2B2_2C showing a reentrance behavior are analyzed yielding a very good agreement with experimental data.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, REVTeX, submitted to PR

    Color Reflection Invariance and Monopole Condensation in QCD

    We review the quantum instability of the Savvidy-Nielsen-Olesen (SNO) vacuum of the one-loop effective action of SU(2) QCD, and point out a critical defect in the calculation of the functional determinant of the gluon loop in the SNO effective action. We prove that the gauge invariance, in particular the color reflection invariance, exclude the unstable tachyonic modes from the gluon loop integral.     Modelling spatially regulated B-catenin dynamics & invasion in intestinal crypts

    Experimental data (e.g., genetic lineage and cell population studies) on intestinal crypts reveal that regulatory features of crypt behavior, such as control via morphogen gradients, are remarkably well conserved among numerous organisms (e.g., from mouse and rat to human) and throughout the different regions of the small and large intestines. In this article, we construct a partial differential equation model of a single colonic crypt that describes the spatial distribution of Wnt pathway proteins along the crypt axis. The novelty of our continuum model is that it is based upon assumptions that can be directly related to processes at the cellular and subcellular scales. We use the model to predict how the distributions of Wnt pathway proteins are affected by mutations. The model is then extended to investigate how mutant cell populations can invade neighboring crypts. The model simulations suggest that cell crowding caused by increased proliferation and decreased cell loss may be sufficient for a mutant cell population to colonize a neighboring healthy crypt

    Susceptibility of Several Insecticides on Three Aphids

    Differences in susceptibility of several organophosphate, carbamate and pyrethroid insecticides to three aphids species were determined by leaf-dipping and spray methods. The insects tested were the apterous adults of the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae), cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) and soybean aphid (Aphis glycines). The comparison of LC50 levels was indicated as follows: (1) The susceptibility to insecticides tested were greatly varied with the test methods. (2) The leaf-dipping method is more recommendable than the spray method for c insecticide screening with aphids. It was easier, more accurate and less variable than the latter. (3) The susceptibility to insecticides was greatly varied between the aphid species. Soybean aphid was more susceptible to the insecticides than green peach aphid and cotton aphid.     LMS Based Adaptive Channel Estimation for LTE Uplink

    In this paper, a variable step size based least mean squares (LMS) channel estimation (CE) algorithm is presented for a single carrier frequency division multiple access(SC-FDMA) system under the umbrella of the long term evolution (LTE). This unbiased CE method can automatically adapts the weighting coefficients on the channel condition. Therefore, it does not require knowledge of channel,and noise statistics. Furthermore, it uses a phase weighting scheme to eliminate the signal fluctuations due to noise and decision errors. Such approaches can guarantee the convergence towards the true channel coefficient. The mean and mean square behaviors of the proposed CE algorithm are also analyzed. With the help of theoretical analysis and simulation results, we prove that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of mean square error (MSE) and bit error rate (BER) by more than around 2.5dB

    HELAS and MadGraph with spin-3/2 particles

    Fortran subroutines to calculate helicity amplitudes with massive spin-3/2 particles, such as massive gravitinos, which couple to the standard model and supersymmetric particles via the supercurrent, are added to the HELAS (HELicity Amplitude Subroutines) library. They are coded in such a way that arbitrary amplitudes with external gravitinos can be generated automatically by MadGraph, after slight modifications.
