    Electronic Structures of Fe3−xV_{3-x}V_x$Si Probed by Photoemission Spectroscopy

    The electronic structures of the Heusler type compounds Fe3−xV_{3-x}V_x$Si in the concentration range between x = 0 and x = 1 have been probed by photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The observed shift of Si 2p core- level and the main valence band structres indicate a chemical potential shift to higher energy with increasing x. It is also clarified that the density of state at Fermi edge is owing to the collaboration of V 3d and Fe 3d derived states. Besides the decrease of the spectral intensity near Fermi edge with increasing x suggests the formation of pseudo gap at large x.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, 5 reference

    Initial wave packets and the various power-law decreases of scattered wave packets at long times

    The long time behavior of scattered wave packets ψ(x,t)\psi (x,t) from a finite-range potential is investigated, by assuming ψ(x,t)\psi (x,t) to be initially located outside the potential. It is then shown that ψ(x,t)\psi (x,t) can asymptotically decrease in the various power laws at long time, according to its initial characteristics at small momentum. As an application, we consider the square-barrier potential system and demonstrate that ψ(x,t)\psi (x,t) exhibits the asymptotic behavior t−3/2t^{-3/2}, while another behavior like t−5/2t^{-5/2} can also appear for another ψ(x,t)\psi (x,t).Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    Spatial Resolution of a Micromegas-TPC Using the Charge Dispersion Signal

    The Time Projection Chamber (TPC) for the International Linear Collider will need to measure about 200 track points with a resolution close to 100 μ\mum. A Micro Pattern Gas Detector (MPGD) readout TPC could achieve the desired resolution with existing techniques using sub-millimeter width pads at the expense of a large increase in the detector cost and complexity. We have recently applied a new MPGD readout concept of charge dispersion to a prototype GEM-TPC and demonstrated the feasibility of achieving good resolution with pads similar in width to the ones used for the proportional wire TPC. The charge dispersion studies were repeated with a Micromegas TPC amplification stage. We present here our first results on the Micromegas-TPC resolution with charge dispersion.     One-Dimensional Approximation of Viscous Flows

    Attention has been paid to the similarity and duality between the Gregory-Laflamme instability of black strings and the Rayleigh-Plateau instability of extended fluids. In this paper, we derive a set of simple (1+1)-dimensional equations from the Navier-Stokes equations describing thin flows of (non-relativistic and incompressible) viscous fluids. This formulation, a generalization of the theory of drop formation by Eggers and his collaborators, would make it possible to examine the final fate of Rayleigh-Plateau instability, its dimensional dependence, and possible self-similar behaviors before and after the drop formation, in the context of fluid/gravity correspondence.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures; v2: refs & comments adde

    Complex-Orbital Order in Fe_3O_4 and Mechanism of the Verwey Transition

    Electronic state and the Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe_3O_4) are studied using a spinless three-band Hubbard model for 3d electrons on the B sites with the Hartree-Fock approximation and the exact diagonalisation method. Complex-orbital, e.g., 1/sqrt(2)[|zx> + i |yz>], ordered (COO) states having noncollinear orbital moments ~ 0.4 mu_B on the B sites are obtained with the cubic lattice structure of the high-temperature phase. The COO state is a novel form of magnetic ordering within the orbital degree of freedom. It arises from the formation of Hund's second rule states of spinless pseudo-d molecular orbitals in the Fe_4 tetrahedral units of the B sites and ferromagnetic alignment of their fictitious orbital moments. A COO state with longer periodicity is obtained with pseudo-orthorhombic Pmca and Pmc2_1 structures for the low-temperature phase. The state spontaneously lowers the crystal symmetry to the monoclinic and explains experimentally observed rhombohedral cell deformation and Jahn-Teller like distortion. From these findings, we consider that at the Verwey transition temperature, the COO state remaining to be short-range order impeded by dynamical lattice distortion in high temperature is developed into that with long-range order coupled with the monoclinic lattice distortion.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in J.     The various power decays of the survival probability at long times for free quantum particle

    The long time behaviour of the survival probability of initial state and its dependence on the initial states are considered, for the one dimensional free quantum particle. We derive the asymptotic expansion of the time evolution operator at long times, in terms of the integral operators. This enables us to obtain the asymptotic formula for the survival probability of the initial state ψ(x)\psi (x), which is assumed to decrease sufficiently rapidly at large ∣x∣|x|. We then show that the behaviour of the survival probability at long times is determined by that of the initial state ψ\psi at zero momentum k=0k=0. Indeed, it is proved that the survival probability can exhibit the various power-decays like t−2m−1t^{-2m-1} for an arbitrary non-negative integers mm as t→∞t \to \infty , corresponding to the initial states with the condition ψ^(k)=O(km)\hat{\psi} (k) = O(k^m) as k→0k\to 0.Comment: 15 pages, to appear in J.
