    Some university students are more equal than others: Evidence from England

    This paper estimates the efficiency of students in English universities using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and a new dataset which is able to capture the behaviour of university students. Taking as the output the classification of a university degree, we use as inputs teaching hours and quality, entry qualifications, and the effort level. We find that university students differ in terms of the efficiency with which they use inputs in producing good degrees. In a second stage, we explore the determinants of the efficiency of university students using a truncated regression model. Higher student efficiency is found to be positively and significantly related to university size, and negatively and significantly related to the proportion of part-time students and the number of academic staff. The quality of a university has no significant impact on the efficiency of its students once endogeneity of university quality is controlled for.

    This paper explores the determinants of the choice of UK universities by overseas undergraduate applicants. We use data on overseas applicants in Business Studies and Engineering from 2002 to 2007, to 97 UK universities. Estimating using a Hausman-Taylor model to control for the possible correlation between our explanatory variables and unobservable university level effects, we find that the fees charged may influence the application decision of some students, but that any relationship between levels of fees and applications is nonlinear. The quality of education provided is positively and significantly related to the number of applications. Proximity to London and the existing popularity of a university among home applicants, are also significant predictors of university applications

    Instantonic approach to triple well potential

    By using a usual instanton method we obtain the energy splitting due to quantum tunneling through the triple well barrier.     Production of ethylene from ethanol dehydration was investigated over H3PO4 (10 wt.% to 30wt.%)-modified cerium oxide catalysts synthesized by wet impregnation technique. The prepared catalysts were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), N2 adsorption-desorption method, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) for the physicochemical properties. The ethanol catalytic dehydration was carried out in a fixed-bed reactor at 673-773 K and at ethanol partial pressure of 33 kPa. The effects of phosphorus loading on catalyst and reaction temperatures were investigated in terms of catalytic activity towards product selectivity and yield. Overall, the selectivity and yield of ethylene increased with the temperature and phosphorus loading. The highest ethylene selectivity and yield were 99% and 65%, respectively, at 773 K and 33 kPa over the 30 wt.% H3PO4-modified cerium oxide

    Variability of the NGC 1333 IRAS 4A Outflow: Molecular Hydrogen and Silicon Monoxide Images

    The NGC 1333 region was observed in the H2 1-0 S(1) line. The H2 images cover a 5' x 7' region around IRAS 4. Numerous H2 emission features were detected. The northeast-southwest bipolar outflow driven by IRAS 4A was studied by combining the H2 images with SiO maps published previously. The SiO-H2 outflows are continuous on the southwestern side but show a gap on the northeastern side. The southwestern outflow lobe curves smoothly, and the position angle increases with the distance from the driving source. The base and the outer tip of the northeastern outflow lobe are located at positions opposite to the corresponding parts of the southwestern lobe. This point-symmetry suggests that the outflow axis may be drifting or precessing clockwise in the plane of the sky and that the cause of the axis drift may be intrinsic to the outflow engine. The axis drift model is supported by the asymmetric lateral intensity profile of the SiO outflow. The axis drift rate is about 0.011 deg yr-1. The middle part of the northeastern outflow does not exactly follow the point symmetry because of the superposition of two different kinds of directional variability: the axis drift of the driving source and the deflection by a dense core. The axis drift model provides a good explanation for the large deflection angle of the northeastern outflow. Other H2 emission features around the IRAS 4 region are discussed briefly. Some of them are newly found outflows, and some are associated with outflows already known before
