Employee Age as a Moderator of the Relationship Between Ambition and Work Role Affect
Past research has demonstrated a negative relationship between ambition, or the desire to get ahead, and job satisfaction. In the present paper, age was hypothesized to moderate the relationship between ambition and job satisfaction such that the relationship between ambition and satisfaction is more negative for older employees than for younger employees. Three studies, with three criterion variables (promotion satisfaction, extrinsic job satisfaction, overall job satisfaction), were used to test the hypothesis. Results indicated support for the hypothesized interaction. The discussion focuses on the implications of the results for organizational and individual career management strategies
Detection of Exotic Massive Hadrons in Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Telescopes
We investigate the detection of exotic massive strongly interacting hadrons
(uhecrons) in ultra high energy cosmic ray telescopes. The conclusion is that
experiments such as the Pierre Auger Observatory have the potential to detect
these particles. It is shown that uhecron showers have clear distinctive
features when compared to proton and nuclear showers. The simulation of uhecron
air showers, and its detection and reconstruction by fluorescence telescopes is
described. We determine basic cuts in observables that will separate uhecrons
from the cosmic ray bulk, assuming this is composed by protons. If these are
composed by heavier nucleus the separation will be much improved. We also
discuss photon induced showers. The complementarity between uhecron detection
in accelerator experiments is discussed.Comment: 9 page 9 figure
Providers’ Perception of Alert Fatigue After Implementation of User-Filtered Warnings
Alert fatigue is a complex problem that many health institutions face when using an electronic health record (EHR). The addition of user-filtered warnings (UFW) is a physicians’ proposed intervention at Inova Health System (IHS), a large 5-hospital health system in Northern Virginia, that allows prescribers to filter out specific drug-drug interactions and pregnancy and lactation medication alerts for a 30-day period. This study aims to determine the impact of UFW on physicians’ perception of alert fatigue and to calculate the reduction of medication alerts. It was hypothesized that the reduction in alerts will significantly impact physicians’ perception of alert fatigue in a positive manner. Physician perception of alert fatigue was assessed using online surveys before and after the implementation of UFW. Data from Medications Warnings Statistics reports were used to assess the reduction of alerts fired post-implementation of UFW. For the primary outcome, there was no significant difference in the overall perception of alert fatigue before and after the implementation of UFW. For the secondary outcome, the number of medication alerts was decreased by 16.7% post UFW implementation. Overall, the data does not support UFW to reduce alert fatigue

Tropical lows in southern Africa: tracks, rainfall contributions and the role of ENSO
Southern African tropical lows are synoptic-scale cyclonic vortices that propagate westward across southern Africa in the Austral summer. They strongly influence local rainfall and aggregate in the climatological DJF mean to form the Angola Low. In this study, tropical lows are identified and tracked using an objective feature tracking method. The statistics of tropical low tracks over southern Africa are presented and compared across three reanalysis products. Findings are compared to the literature of tropical low pressure areas elsewhere in the world, where it is found that most tracking statistics compare well, but that the tendency of tropical lows to become semi-stationary over Angola is unique to Southern southern Africa. The hypothesis that tropical lows in Angola have a causal relationship with Tropical Temperate Troughs is tested, and a correlation between occurrence frequencies is found at inter-annual but not daily time-scales. Precipitation is attributed to the tropical lows and it is found that tropical lows are associated with 31% of rainfall across tropical southern Africa, based on gridded precipitation products. The inter-annual variability of the number of tropical lows that form
34 per year (σ = 6 events/annum) is linked to ENSO and the tropical easterly jet. The mean latitude of tropical lows is shifted northwards during El Nino and southwards during La Nina. Much of the inter-annual precipitation variability maximum in Angola is attributed to rainfall associated with tropical lows. These results provide insights into the southern African response to ENSO and into the mechanisms of rainfall in the southern African tropical edge
Evaluating Novel Mask-RCNN Architectures for Ear Mask Segmentation
The human ear is generally universal, collectible, distinct, and permanent.
Ear-based biometric recognition is a niche and recent approach that is being
explored. For any ear-based biometric algorithm to perform well, ear detection
and segmentation need to be accurately performed. While significant work has
been done in existing literature for bounding boxes, a lack of approaches
output a segmentation mask for ears. This paper trains and compares three newer
models to the state-of-the-art MaskRCNN (ResNet 101 +FPN) model across four
different datasets. The Average Precision (AP) scores reported show that the
newer models outperform the state-of-the-art but no one model performs the best

‘Everything’s from the inside out with PCOS’:exploring women’s experiences of living with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and co-morbidities through Skype™ interviews
Polycystic ovary syndrome is an endocrine disorder affecting 1 in 10 women. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome can experience co-morbidities, including depressive symptoms. This research explores the experience of living with polycystic ovary syndrome and co-morbidities. Totally, 10 participants with polycystic ovary syndrome took part in Skypeâ„¢ interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. Four themes emerged from the data: change (to life plans and changing nature of condition); support (healthcare professionals, education and relationships); co-morbidities (living with other conditions and depression, self-harm and suicidal ideation) and identity (feminine identity and us and them). The findings highlight the need for screening of women with polycystic ovary syndrome for depressive disorders
Female Superintendents: Historic Barriers and Prospects for the Future
This paper addresses the historic under representation of female superintendents. The primary focus is the legacy of discrimination, in which the barriers to female advancement in a traditionally male field are described. Particular attention is given to three different models of male dominance that have been developed to explain how and/or why women have been excluded from top positions in educational administration. In part two, recognition of the importance of women\u27s contributions to evolving theory in educational administration and a description of the feminine leadership model is offered, wherein women utilize flexible web-like structures, empower others, and prioritize children and learning. In conclusion, future prospects for women in the superintendency are discussed
