ICT-based reforms in local government decision-making in the gram panchayats of Kerala

    Get PDF
The beneficial impact of computerisation can be felt in all elements that contribute to decision-making in panchayats in the state of Kerala. However, even though computerisation is bringing about immense improvements compared to traditional administrative practices, but scope still remains for further improvement. Instead of the 'as it is' computerisation that is mostly carried out a process based approach is needed

Reef fish diversity of bottom set gillnet landings at Pamban, Tamil Nadu, India

    Get PDF
The coral reef areas of Gulf of Mannar support a rich fauna of fishes and bottom set gill net is one of the important gears employed in this area. Reef fishes landed at Pamban fish landing centre by bottom-set gillnets operated in Gulf of Mannar, for a period of three years from January, 2009 to December, 2011 were studied based on fortnightly sampling. A total of 69 species belonging to 29 families were recorded during the study and as per IUCN, two species, Himantura uarnak and Rhinoptera javanica are included under the Vulnerable category. The landings amounted to 1761 tonnes during the period with a maximum contribution of 44% during 2011 and it was the minimum during 2010 with a share of 27%. Species-wise landings indicated the dominance of Lethrinus nebulosus (11.5%) followed by Neotrygon kuhlii (10.6%). The richness and diversity indices showed a gradual increase from 2009 to 2011 and all the year wise points in the funnel plot for variation in taxonomic distinctness (λ+) are within the expected limit. The qualitative and quantitative abundance along with different diversity measures are presented and discussed in this paper. The results of the present investigation suggest that the bottom set gill net fishery is in a healthy condition with respect to Pamban fish landing centre

A study to evaluate the level of satisfaction perceived by postnatal mothers following nursing care in postnatal wards as expressed by themselves: pilot study

A descriptive study was conducted to evaluate the level of satisfaction perceived by postnatal mothers following with nursing care in postnatal wards  as expressed by themselves and to determine the association between patient's satisfaction with nursing care and selected sociodemographic variables .Purposive sampling technique was employed to  select sample and it  consisted of 100 postnatal mothers who met the inclusion criteria .Jipi’s postnatal satisfaction with nursing care questionnaire (JPSNQ)  which contained  structured questionnaire schedule and demographic proforma was used to collect data. The questionnaire was classified under six domains namely orientation, information, communication, comfort and care, specific to postnatal care and value and preference of postnatal mothers with the total of 39 . Findings of the study showed that (39%) of postnatal  mothers were moderately satisfied and (60%) of  postnatal mothers were minimally satisfied and (1 %) of  postnatal mothers were satisfied with the care provided by the nursing personnel. They were highly satisfied in the area of value and preference. The least satisfaction was found in the area related to orientation. Patients' opinions regarding their expectations and their satisfaction with nursing care can be considered as an important opportunity for nurses to plan and implement appropriate strategies that improve the quality of nursing care. Few instruments are available to assess the postnatal mother's satisfaction with nursing care. This study tests the validity and reliability of Jipi’s postnatal satisfaction with nursing care questionnaire (JPSNQ).Descriptive design was used for the study .The sample consisted of 100 postnatal mothers who met the inclusion criteria and the sample was selected using purposive sampling technique. A structured questionnaire schedule was administered to the postnatal mothers respectively. The questionnaire was classified under six domains namely orientation, information, communication, comfort and care, specific to postnatal care and value and preference of postnatal mothers with the total of 39 items. The reliability coefficient of the tool was established using cronbach’s alpha method .Cronbach’s alpha is the most widely used method for evaluating internal consistency. The reliability co-efficient obtained for postnatal mothers level of satisfaction with nursing care was(r = 0.834) which indicated that the tool was reliable. The results demonstrated that the subscales within the scale are internally consistent, subscales’ Cronbach alpha ranged from 0.720 to 0.847. In addition, all subscales surpassed the 0.70 criterion for reliability and were positively and significant. An assessment of validity was made in terms of (content validity) which were obtained for demographic proforma out of the 10 items, 8 had 100% agreement and two had 90% agreement. Construct validity was measured with extreme group method.  Item analysis was done with Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients - all the items are significantly correlated with the overall satisfaction. Structured questionnaire   schedule on mother’s satisfaction: There were 39 items in the structured questionnaire schedule on postnatal mother’s satisfaction. All had 100% agreement. The newly developed questionnaire is valid and reliable to measures maternal satisfaction with nursing care in inpatient postpartum unit. Analysis of TOPEX laser retroreflector array characteristics

    Get PDF
The joint U.S./French TOPEX/POSEIDON mission was successfully launched on August 10, 1992 for the study of ocean height variation using microwave altimetry. Accurate determination of the satellite orbit is paramount to the determination of the above phenomenon. To accomplish this, using laser ranging, the satellite is equipped with a laser retroreflector array (LRA) around the altimeter antennae. The goal of laser ranging is to obtain precision orbits with a radial accuracy of 13 cm to the center of mass of the satellite. This requires the laser range correction to the LRA reference be known at the sub-cm level and is quite a challenge considering the geometry of the LRA. Detailed studies were initiated by the TOPEX project office (Christensen) under the auspices of the CDP/DOSE project (Degnan) at Goddard Space Flight Center
