    Estudio de Necesidades de señalización en la Universidad Técnica de Manabí para mitigar riesgos

    Abstract— La señalética es una disciplina del diseño gráfico relacionada con la comunicación; es la información que estudia y desarrolla un sistema de comunicación visual, que es reducido a un conjunto de señales o símbolos gráficos de fácil compresión, los cuales cumplen la función de guiar a una persona o conjunto de personas en aquellos puntos o lugares donde se prestan servicios o se planteen dudas acerca del comportamiento. El objetivo de esta investigación fue identificar los lugares más afectados por la escasez de señalización dentro de la Universidad Técnica de Manabí (UTM) y los tipos de señaléticas adecuadas para estos. Para ello, se utilizó las principales técnicas de recolección de información, en las cuales se aplicaron los métodos cualitativos y cuantitativos. La población de esta investigación, como antes mencionada, es la UTM, de la cual se tomó como muestra un 20% que es perteneciente a las facultades de Medicina, Electricidad, Idiomas y el Instituto de Ciencias Básicas (ICB) Con los resultados obtenidos se demostró que el tema de la investigación realizada es de interés entre los involucrados, reconociendo la falta de señaléticas en diferentes puntos, lo cual está provocando el irrespeto de los conductores hacia los peatones o ciclistas, corroborando con ello la necesidad de cubrir diferentes áreas con señales que disminuyan el riesgo en el interior de la universidadn.   Index Terms— señales, riesgo, disciplin

    Aromatic Bromination Abolishes the Psychomotor Features and Pro-social Responses of MDMA (“Ecstasy”) in Rats and Preserves Affinity for the Serotonin Transporter (SERT)

    The entactogen MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine, “Ecstasy”) exerts its psychotropic effects acting primarily as a substrate of the serotonin transporter (SERT) to induce a non-exocytotic release of serotonin. Nevertheless, the roles of specific positions of the aromatic ring of MDMA associated with the modulation of typical entactogenic effects, using analogs derived from the MDMA template, are still not fully understood. Among many possibilities, aromatic halogenation of the phenylalkylamine moiety may favor distribution to the brain due to increased lipophilicity, and sometimes renders psychotropic substances of high affinity for their molecular targets and high potency in humans. In the present work, a new MDMA analog brominated at C(2) of the aromatic ring (2-Br-4,5-MDMA) has been synthesized and pharmacologically characterized in vitro and in vivo. First, binding competition experiments against the SERT-blocker citalopram were carried out in human platelets and compared with MDMA. Besides, its effects on platelet aggregation were performed in platelet enriched human plasma using collagen as aggregation inductor. Second, as platelets are considered an appropriate peripheral model for estimating central serotonin availability, the functional effects of 2-Br-4,5-MDMA and MDMA on ATP release during human platelet aggregation were evaluated. The results obtained showed that 2-Br-4,5-MDMA exhibits higher affinity for SERT than MDMA and fully abolishes both platelet aggregation and ATP release, resembling the pharmacological profile of citalopram. Subsequent in vivo evaluation in rats at three dose levels showed that 2-Br-4,5-MDMA lacks all key MDMA-like behavioral responses in rats, including hyperlocomotion, enhanced active avoidance conditioning responses and increased social interaction. Taken together, the results obtained are consistent with the notion that 2-Br-4,5-MDMA should not be expected to be an MDMA-like substrate of SERT, indicating that aromatic bromination at C(2) modulates the pharmacodynamic properties of the substrate MDMA, yielding a citalopram-like compound

    Multi-ancestry genome-wide association meta-analysis of Parkinson?s disease

    Although over 90 independent risk variants have been identified for Parkinson’s disease using genome-wide association studies, most studies have been performed in just one population at a time. Here we performed a large-scale multi-ancestry meta-analysis of Parkinson’s disease with 49,049 cases, 18,785 proxy cases and 2,458,063 controls including individuals of European, East Asian, Latin American and African ancestry. In a meta-analysis, we identified 78 independent genome-wide significant loci, including 12 potentially novel loci (MTF2, PIK3CA, ADD1, SYBU, IRS2, USP8, PIGL, FASN, MYLK2, USP25, EP300 and PPP6R2) and fine-mapped 6 putative causal variants at 6 known PD loci. By combining our results with publicly available eQTL data, we identified 25 putative risk genes in these novel loci whose expression is associated with PD risk. This work lays the groundwork for future efforts aimed at identifying PD loci in non-European populations

    The effect of climate change on electricity expenditures in Massachusetts

    Climate change affects consumer expenditures by altering the consumption of and price for electricity. Previous analyses focus solely on the former, which implicitly assumes that climate-induced changes in consumption do not affect price. But this assumption is untenable because a shift in demand alters quantity and price at equilibrium. Here we present the first empirical estimates for the effect of climate change on electricity prices. Translated through the merit order dispatch of existing capacity for generating electricity, climate-induced changes in daily and monthly patterns of electricity consumption cause non-linear changes in electricity prices. A 2 degrees C increase in global mean temperature increases the prices for and consumption of electricity in Massachusetts USA, such that the average household's annual expenditures on electricity increase by about 12%. Commercial customers incur a 9% increase. These increases are caused largely by higher prices for electricity, whose impacts on expenditures are 1.3 and 3.6 fold larger than changes in residential and commercial consumption, respectively. This suggests that previous empirical studies understate the effects of climate change on electricity expenditures and that policy may be needed to ensure that the market generates investments in peaking capacity to satisfy climate-driven changes in summer-time consumption
