    Hydrodynamic Description of Granular Convection

We present a hydrodynamic model that captures the essence of granular dynamics in a vibrating bed. We carry out the linear stability analysis and uncover the instability mechanism that leads to the appearance of the convective rolls via a supercritical bifurcation of a bouncing solution. We also explicitly determine the onset of convection as a function of control parameters and confirm our picture by numerical simulations of the continuum equations.Comment: 14 pages, RevTex 11pages + 3 pages figures (Type csh

Ozone-enhanced layers in the troposphere over the equatorial Pacific Ocean and the influence of transport of midlatitude UT/LS air

International audienceOccurrence of ozone (O3)-enhanced layers in the troposphere over the equatorial Pacific Ocean and their seasonal variation were investigated based on ozonesonde data obtained at three Southern Hemisphere ADditional OZonesondes (SHADOZ) sites, Watukosek, American Samoa and San Cristobal, for 6 years between 1998 and 2003. O3-enhanced layers were found in about 50% of observed O3 profiles at the three sites on yearly average. The formation processes of O3-enhanced layers were investigated by meteorological analyses including backward trajectories. On numerous occasions, O3-enhanced layers resulted from the transport of air masses affected by biomass burning. The contribution of this process was about 30% at San Cristobal during the periods from February to March and from August to September, while it was relatively low, about 10%, at Watukosek and Samoa. A significant number of the O3-enhanced layers were attributed to the transport of midlatitude upper-troposphere and lower-stratosphere (UT/LS) air. Meteorological analyses indicated that these layers originated from equatorward and downward transport of the midlatitude UT/LS air masses through a narrow region between high- and low-pressure systems around the subtropical jet stream. This process accounted for more than 40% at Watukosek between May and December, about 60% or more at Samoa all year around, and about 40% at San Cristobal between November and March, indicating that it was important for O3 budget over the equatorial Pacific Ocean

Localization of Alkaline Phosphatase and Cathepsin D during Cell Restoration after Colchicine Treatment in Primary Cultures of Fetal Rat Hepatocytes

Localization of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and cathepsin D (CAPD) in primary cultures of fetal rat hepatocytes was examined using double immunofluorescent staining in order to investigate the relationship between lysosome movement and the fate of ALP during cell restoration after microtubule disruption by colchicine. At 3 hr and 24 hr after colchicine treatment, numerous coarse dots containing ALP were observed throughout the cytoplasm, and some of these showed colocalization with CAPD. At 48 hr and 72 hr after colchicine treatment, although most of the dots containing ALP in the cytoplasm disappeared, dots containing CAPD remained. The present results suggest that the denatured ALP proteins remaining in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes during cell restoration after colchicine treatment are digested by lysosomes

Magnetic structure and orbital ordering in BaCoO3 from first-principles calculations

Ab initio calculations using the APW+lo method as implemented in the WIEN2k code have been used to describe the electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional system BaCoO3. Both, GGA and LDA+U approximations were employed to study different orbital and magnetic orderings. GGA predicts a metallic ground state whereas LDA+U calculations yield an insulating and ferromagnetic ground state (in a low-spin state) with an alternating orbital ordering along the Co-Co chains, consistent with the available experimental data.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figure
