    INSIGHT OF METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF VENTILAGO MADERASPATANA LEAVES ON HEPATOPROTECTIVE ACTIVITY UNDER STREPTOZOTOCIN-INDUCED DIABETIC RATS

    Objective: The methanolic leaf extract of Ventilago maderaspatana (MEVML, 200 mg/kg body weight [b.w.]) was investigate to hepatoprotective activity under streptozotocin-induced (45 mg/kg b.w.) diabetic (Di) rats. Methods: In the present study, we determined the blood glucose levels, b.w., insulin, creatinine, and bilirubin levels in normal, Di, Di treated with MEVML and positive control rats. Results: The Di rats shown adverse changes in blood glucose levels, b.w., insulin, creatinine, and bilirubin levels when compared to other group rats. Reverse the adverse changes in the above parameters when treated the Di rats with MEVML Conclusion: The MEVML shown anti-diabetic activity and reverse the adverse changes in the above parameters in liver so that the MEVML supported the traditional claim of the hepatoprotective activity under Di condition

    Ocimum sanctum: a review on the pharmacological properties

    Herbal medicine, the backbone of traditional medicine in many countries have played an important role in curing the diseases of humans since ancient time. Medicinal plants are great source of bioactive compounds and chemical structures that have potential beneficial effects. The present review compiles information on ethnopharmacologically useful information and pharmacological properties of Ocimum sanctum. Ocimum sanctum (OS) has many medicinal properties like antioxidant, antidiabetic, antiulcer, anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal and other. The phytochemicals compounds of Ocimum, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, essential oils, tannins and saponins play an important role in herbal medicine. Bioactive compounds of Ocimum responsible for its various medicinal properties and their effects at the molecular level need to be investigated in more detail. Furthermore, pharmacological properties of bioactive compounds in Ocimum sanctum are required to confirm the ethnomedicinal claims of Ocimum sanctum for pharmaceutical therapeutic applications

    Abstract The present study was premeditated to examine the possible mechanisms where by ginger (Zingiber officinale) could protect cardiac tissue from alcohol toxicity in rats. The carbohydrate metabolic profiles like total carbohydrates, pyruvate, total proteins, free amino acids and lactate levels were measured in heart tissue. The total carbohydrates, pyruvate, and total proteins were significant declined while free amino acids, lactate levels were significant increased in alcohol intoxicated rats. Whereas with ginger (200 mg/kg body weight) treatment shown significant increase in the total carbohydrates, total proteins and pyruvate levels, whereas free amino acids, lactate levels were significant drop in the cardiac tissues. From the present study, we conclude that ginger protects the heart tissue from alcohol toxicity in rats, this may be due to the presence of many bioactive compounds in ginger

    Objective:  Alcohol depletes acetylcholine levels in the brain thus accounting for some of the cognitive impairments and withdrawal symptoms associated with alcohol ingestion. Low acetylcholine levels produced by alcohol intake results in long and short term memory deficits, trouble focusing, concentrating as well as stage 4 (REM) sleep deprivation. Methods: Measurements of brain acetylcholine levels and acetylcholine metabolizing enzyme AchE were made in rats treated with either ethanol (2g kg-1 body wt daily) alone or ethanol with ginger extract supplementation (200 mg kg-1 body wt daily for 6 weeks). EtOH with or without ginger extract was administered orally by oral intubation for 42 days. Matched controls were given saline. Results: ACh synthesis in the brain of rats treated with ethanol alone for 6 weeks was significantly (P less than 0.01) inhibited. Ach concentration in the brain of rats treated with ethanol plus ginger extract for 42 days was three times that of rats treated with ethanol alone. ACh synthesis in rats with ethanol withdrawal and ginger extract supplementation was also significantly (P less than 0.01) higher. Spatial memory and learning of rats were tested by Morris water maze test with or without ginger extract supplementation during withdrawal from chronic ethanol consumption was also tested. The effect of EtOH on ACh synthesis and influence of ginger extract on Ach concentration in the brain was found to be positively correlated. Conclusion:  The current data suggest that chronic ethanol exposure may decrease ACh synthesis while ginger extract restores and exhibits protective capability and cognitive enhancing properties during ethanol withdrawal. Keywords: Ginger Extract; Alcohol; Cognitive Behaviour; Acetylcholine; Ethanol Withdrawa

    Effect of alcohol on blood glucose and antioxidant enzymes in the liver and kidney of diabetic rats

    Objective: Diabetes mellitus affects every organ in the man including eyes, kidney, heart, and nervous system. Alcohol consumption is a widespread practice. As the effects of chronic alcohol consumption on diabetic state have been little studied, this study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the effect of alcohol in diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: For this study, the rats were divided into five groups (n = 6 in each group): normal control (NC), alcohol treatment (At), diabetic control (DC), diabetic plus alcohol treatment (D + At), diabetic plus glibenclamide treatment (D + Gli). Alcohol treatment was given to the diabetic rats for 30 days. During the period the blood glucose levels, and body weight changes were observed at regular intervals. The antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were assayed in the liver and kidney tissues. Results: The blood glucose levels were significantly (P < 0.001) elevated and body weight significantly (P < 0.001) decreased in alcohol-treated diabetic rats. SOD and CAT activities were decreased and the MDA level increased significantly (P < 0.001) in alcohol-treated diabetic rats. Histopathological studies showed that alcohol damages the liver and kidney tissues in diabetic rats. Conclusion: These finddings concluded that the consumption of alcohol in diabetic rats worsens the condition. So the consumption of alcohol by diabetic subjects may be potentially harmful

    143-149Superoxide dismutase, ascorbic acid, glutathione and uric acid levels were decreased and xanthine oxidase, glutathione-s-transferase activities were increased in alcohol treated (2 g/kg body weight, once daily for 30 days) group. However, treatment with ethanolic extract of ginger (100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg body weight, po, once daily for 30 days) these parameters came to normalcy showing the antioxidant effect of ginger. The antioxidant compounds of ginger may modulate the oxidative stress parameters. The biochemical findings were supplemented by histopathological examination of the kidney. Severe congestion and degenerative changes in tubules in alcohol treated rats were restored by ginger extract treatment. The results confirm the renal protective effect of ginger in alcohol treated rats

    Diabetes is a major threat to global public health, and the number of diabetic patients is rapidly increasing worldwide. Evidence suggests that oxidative stress is involved in the pathophysiology of diabetic complications and alcoholic diseases. The aim of this study is to find out the impact of alcohol on lipid metabolic profiles in kidney tissue under streptozotocin induced diabetic condition. No study has been reported so far on the effect of alcohol on diabetic condition and also with reference to lipid metabolic profiles. Hence, the present study has been designed to elucidate the impact of alcoholism on diabetic condition. Male wistar strain albino rats were randomly divided into four groups: control (saline treated) NC, alcohol-treated (At), diabetic control (DC), and alcohol-treated diabetic rats (D+At). In alcohol-treated diabetic rats, we observed high levels of MDA, total cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids and also high levels of blood glucose than other groups. Moreover, degenerative changes of renal cells in alcohol-treated diabetic group were maximized by administration of alcohol as evinced by histopathological examination. This study suggests that alcohol consumption could be an aggravation factor which contributes for the formation of free radicals in diabetic condition. Therefore, consumption of alcohol during diabetic condition is harmful
