    The purpose of this work is, at first, a general overview on the state-of-art of the transportation system in India outlining the related energy consumption, for the different transport modes, with consequent estimated emissions. These elements are essential for the preparation of a high-level strategic transport planning on the whole energy issue, to help India in the choices of most suitable transportation systems, according to the well-to-wheel analysis (WTW). Pursuing a WTW global index for India that takes into account both the energy and environmental aspects on a uniform basis is an important aim: it allows the best choices to be made as well as enabling the comparison between some of the most important powertrain and fuel options on the Indian market, the results are discussed from three different points of view: energy, environmental and economic impac

    Phase shifts of synchronized oscillators and the systolic/diastolic blood pressure relation

    We study the phase-synchronization properties of systolic and diastolic arterial pressure in healthy subjects. We find that delays in the oscillatory components of the time series depend on the frequency bands that are considered, in particular we find a change of sign in the phase shift going from the Very Low Frequency band to the High Frequency band. This behavior should reflect a collective behavior of a system of nonlinear interacting elementary oscillators. We prove that some models describing such systems, e.g. the Winfree and the Kuramoto models offer a clue to this phenomenon. For these theoretical models there is a linear relationship between phase shifts and the difference of natural frequencies of oscillators and a change of sign in the phase shift naturally emerges.Comment: 8 figures, 9 page

    Synthesis and Assembly of Dipolar Heterostructured Tetrapods: Colloidal Polymers with “Giant tert-butyl” Groups

    We report on the first synthesis of a heterostructured semiconductor tetrapod from CdSe@CdS that carries a single dipolar nanoparticle tip from a core–shell colloid of Au@Co. A four-step colloidal total synthesis was developed, where the key step in the synthesis was the selective deposition of a single AuNP tip onto a CdSe@CdS tetrapod under UV-irradiation. Synthetic accessibility to this dipolar heterostructured tetrapod enabled the use of these as colloidal monomers to form colloidal polymers that carry the semiconductor tetrapod as a side chain group attached to the CoNP colloidal polymer main chain. The current report details a number of novel discoveries on the selective synthesis of an asymmetric heterostructured tetrapod that is capable of 1D dipolar assembly into colloidal polymers that carry tetrapods as side chain groups that mimic “giant tert-butyl groups”

    The chemical inertness of graphite and, in the case of tubes, of rolled up few layer graphene sheets, requires some degree of “defect engineering” for the fabrication of carbon based heterostructured materials. It is shown that atomic layer deposition provides a means to specifically label anchoring sites and can be used to characterize the surface functionality of differently treated carbon nanotubes. Direct observation of deposited titania by analytical transmission electron microscopy reveals the location and density of anchoring sites as well as structure related concentrations of functional groups on the surface of the tubes. Controlled functionalization of the tubes therefore allows us to tailor the distribution of deposited material and, hence, fabricate complex heterostructures
