Instanton Corrected Non-Supersymmetric Attractors
We discuss non-supersymmetric attractors with an instanton correction in Type
IIA string theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau three-fold at large volume. For
a stable non-supersymmetric black hole, the attractor point must minimize the
effective black hole potential. We study the supersymmetric as well as
non-supersymmetric attractors for the D0-D4 system with instanton corrections.
We show that in simple models, like the STU model, the flat directions of the
mass matrix can be lifted by a suitable choice of the instanton parameters.Comment: Minor modifications, Corrected typos, 38 pages, 1 figur
Bounds on the electromagnetic interactions of excited spin-3/2 leptons
We discuss possible deviations from QED produced by a virtual excited
spin-3/2 lepton in the reaction . Data recorded
by the OPAL Collaboration at a c.m. energy are used to
establish bounds on the nonstandard-lepton mass and coupling strengths.Comment: Latex, 5 pages, 7 ps figures. To be published in Phys. Rev.
Control Plane Compression
We develop an algorithm capable of compressing large networks into a smaller
ones with similar control plane behavior: For every stable routing solution in
the large, original network, there exists a corresponding solution in the
compressed network, and vice versa. Our compression algorithm preserves a wide
variety of network properties including reachability, loop freedom, and path
length. Consequently, operators may speed up network analysis, based on
simulation, emulation, or verification, by analyzing only the compressed
network. Our approach is based on a new theory of control plane equivalence. We
implement these ideas in a tool called Bonsai and apply it to real and
synthetic networks. Bonsai can shrink real networks by over a factor of 5 and
speed up analysis by several orders of magnitude.Comment: Extended version of the paper appearing in ACM SIGCOMM 201
On the Solution of the Number-Projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Equations
The numerical solution of the recently formulated number-projected
Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations is studied in an exactly soluble
cranked-deformed shell model Hamiltonian. It is found that the solution of
these number-projected equations involve similar numerical effort as that of
bare HFB. We consider that this is a significant progress in the mean-field
studies of the quantum many-body systems. The results of the projected
calculations are shown to be in almost complete agreement with the exact
solutions of the model Hamiltonian. The phase transition obtained in the HFB
theory as a function of the rotational frequency is shown to be smeared out
with the projection.Comment: RevTeX, 11 pages, 3 figures. To be published in a special edition of

Dilaton Domain Walls and Dynamical Systems
Domain wall solutions of -dimensional gravity coupled to a dilaton field
with an exponential potential are shown
to be governed by an autonomous dynamical system, with a transcritical
bifurcation as a function of the parameter when . All
phase-plane trajectories are found exactly for , including
separatrices corresponding to walls that interpolate between and
adS_{d-1} \times\bR, and the exact solution is found for . Janus-type
solutions are interpreted as marginal bound states of these ``separatrix
walls''. All flat domain wall solutions, which are given exactly for any
, are shown to be supersymmetric for some superpotential ,
determined by the solution.Comment: 30 pp, 11 figs, significant revision of original. Minor additional

Performance of a Large Area Avalanche Photodiode in a Liquid Xenon Ionization and Scintillation Chamber
Scintillation light produced in liquid xenon (LXe) by alpha particles,
electrons and gamma-rays was detected with a large area avalanche photodiode
(LAAPD) immersed in the liquid. The alpha scintillation yield was measured as a
function of applied electric field. We estimate the quantum efficiency of the
LAAPD to be 45%. The best energy resolution from the light measurement at zero
electric field is 7.5%(sigma) for 976 keV internal conversion electrons from
Bi-207 and 2.6%(sigma) for 5.5 MeV alpha particles from Am-241. The detector
used for these measurements was also operated as a gridded ionization chamber
to measure the charge yield. We confirm that using a LAAPD in LXe does not
introduce impurities which inhibit the drifting of free electrons.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figure
The type of adjuvant in whole inactivated influenza a virus vaccines impacts vaccine-associated enhanced respiratory disease
Influenza A virus (IAV) causes a disease burden in the swine industry in the US and is a challenge to prevent due to substantial genetic and antigenic diversity of IAV that circulate in pig populations. Whole inactivated virus (WIV) vaccines formulated with oil-in-water (OW) adjuvant are commonly used in swine. However, WIV-OW are associated with vaccine-associated enhanced respiratory disease (VAERD) when the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase of the vaccine strain are mismatched with the challenge virus. Here, we assessed if different types of adjuvant in WIV vaccine formulations impacted VAERD outcome. WIV vaccines with a swine δ1-H1N2 were formulated with different commercial adjuvants: OW1, OW2, nano-emulsion squalene-based (NE) and gel polymer (GP). Pigs were vaccinated twice by the intramuscular route, 3 weeks apart, then challenged with an H1N1pdm09 three weeks post-boost and necropsied at 5 days post infection. All WIV vaccines elicited antibodies detected using the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay against the homologous vaccine virus, but not against the heterologous challenge virus; in contrast, all vaccinated groups had cross-reactive IgG antibody and IFN-γ responses against H1N1pdm09, with a higher magnitude observed in OW groups. Both OW groups demonstrated robust homologous HI titers and cross-reactivity against heterologous H1 viruses in the same genetic lineage. However, both OW groups had severe immunopathology consistent with VAERD after challenge when compared to NE, GP, and non-vaccinated challenge controls. None of the WIV formulations protected pigs from heterologous virus replication in the lungs or nasal cavity. Thus, although the type of adjuvant in the WIV formulation played a significant role in the magnitude of immune response to homologous and antigenically similar H1, none tested here increased the breadth of protection against the antigenically-distinct challenge virus, and some impacted immunopathology after challenge
Spherical harmonic decomposition applied to spatial-temporal analysis of human high-density EEG
We demonstrate an application of spherical harmonic decomposition to analysis
of the human electroencephalogram (EEG). We implement two methods and discuss
issues specific to analysis of hemispherical, irregularly sampled data.
Performance of the methods and spatial sampling requirements are quantified
using simulated data. The analysis is applied to experimental EEG data,
confirming earlier reports of an approximate frequency-wavenumber relationship
in some bands.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. E, uses APS RevTeX
