The Reaction 7Li(pi+,pi-)7B and its Implications for 7B
The reaction 7Li(pi+,pi-)7B has been measured at incident pion energies of
30-90 MeV. 7Li constitutes the lightest target nucleus, where the pionic charge
exchange may proceed as a binary reaction to a discrete final state. Like in
the Delta-resonance region the observed cross sections are much smaller than
expected from the systematics found for heavier nuclei. In analogy to the
neutron halo case of 11Li this cross section suppression is interpreted as
evidence for a proton halo in the particle-unstable nucleus 7B.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Search for Exotic Muon Decays
Recently, it has been proposed that the observed anomaly in the time
distribution of neutrino induced reactions, reported by the KARMEN
collaboration, can be interpreted as a signal from an exotic muon decay branch
mu+ to e+ X. It has been shown that this hypothesis gives an acceptable fit to
the KARMEN data if the boson X has a mass of m_X=103.9MeV/c^2, close to the
kinematical limit. We have performed a search for the X particle by studying
for the first time the very low energy part of the Michel spectrum in mu+
decays. Using a HPGe detector setup at the muE4 beamline at PSI we find
branching ratios BR(mu+ to e+ X)<5.7e-4 (90% C.L.) for most of the region
103MeV/c^2<m_X<105MeV/c^2.Comment: 9 page
Collision damping in the pi 3He -> d'N reaction near the threshold
We present a simple quantum mechanical model exploiting the optical potential
approach for the description of collision damping in the reaction pi 3He -> d'N
near the threshold, which recently has been measured at TRIUMF. The influence
of the open d'N -> NNN channel is taken into account. It leads to a suppression
factor of about ten in the d' survival probability. Applications of the method

Search for Narrow NNpi Resonances in Exclusive p p -> p p pi+ pi- Measurements
Narrow structures in the range of a few MeV have been searched for in p p pi+
and p p pi- invariant mass spectra obtained from exclusive measurements of the
p p -> p p pi+ pi- reaction at Tp = 725, 750 and 775 MeV using the PROMICE/WASA
detector at CELSIUS. The selected reaction is particularily well suited for the
search for NN and / or N Delta decoupled dibaryon resonances. Except for a
possible fluctuation at 2087 MeV/c^2 in Mpppi- no narrow structures could be
identified neither in Mpppi+ nor in Mpppi- on the 3 sigma level of statistical
significance, giving an upper limit (95% C.L.) for dibaryon production in this
reaction of sigma < 20 nb for 2020 MeV/c^2 < m(dibaryon) < 2085 MeV/c^2Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Steady State of microemulsions in shear flow
Steady-state properties of microemulsions in shear flow are studied in the
context of a Ginzburg-Landau free-energy approach. Explicit expressions are
given for the structure factor and the time correlation function at the one
loop level of approximation. Our results predict a four-peak pattern for the
structure factor, implying the simultaneous presence of interfaces aligned with
two different orientations.
Due to the peculiar interface structure a non-monotonous relaxation of the
time correlator is also found.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Nonequilibrium dynamics: a renormalized computation scheme
We present a regularized and renormalized version of the one-loop nonlinear
relaxation equations that determine the non-equilibrium time evolution of a
classical (constant) field coupled to its quantum fluctuations. We obtain a
computational method in which the evaluation of divergent fluctuation integrals
and the evaluation of the exact finite parts are cleanly separated so as to
allow for a wide freedom in the choice of regularization and renormalization
schemes. We use dimensional regularization here. Within the same formalism we
analyze also the regularization and renormalization of the energy-momentum
tensor. The energy density serves to monitor the reliability of our numerical
computation. The method is applied to the simple case of a scalar phi^4 theory;

Ordering of the lamellar phase under a shear flow
The dynamics of a system quenched into a state with lamellar order and
subject to an uniform shear flow is solved in the large-N limit. The
description is based on the Brazovskii free-energy and the evolution follows a
convection-diffusion equation. Lamellae order preferentially with the normal
along the vorticity direction. Typical lengths grow as (with
logarithmic corrections) in the flow direction and logarithmically in the shear
direction. Dynamical scaling holds in the two-dimensional case while it is
violated in D=3
The Transcription Factor SpoVG Is of Major Importance for Biofilm Formation of Staphylococcus epidermidis under In Vitro Conditions, but Dispensable for In Vivo Biofilm Formation
Staphylococcus epidermidis is a common cause of device related infections on which pathogens
form biofilms (i.e., multilayered cell populations embedded in an extracellular matrix). Here, we
report that the transcription factor SpoVG is essential for the capacity of S. epidermidis to form such
biofilms on artificial surfaces under in vitro conditions. Inactivation of spoVG in the polysaccharide
intercellular adhesin (PIA) producing S. epidermidis strain 1457 yielded a mutant that, unlike its
parental strain, failed to produce a clear biofilm in a microtiter plate-based static biofilm assay. A
decreased biofilm formation capacity was also observed when 1457 âspoVG cells were co-cultured
with polyurethane-based peripheral venous catheter fragments under dynamic conditions, while
the cis-complemented 1457 âspoVG::spoVG derivative formed biofilms comparable to the levels seen
with the wild-type. Transcriptional studies demonstrated that the deletion of spoVG significantly
altered the expression of the intercellular adhesion (ica) locus by upregulating the transcription of
the ica operon repressor icaR and down-regulating the transcription of icaADBC. Electrophoretic
mobility shift assays (EMSA) revealed an interaction between SpoVG and the icaA-icaR intergenic
region, suggesting SpoVG to promote biofilm formation of S. epidermidis by modulating ica expression.
However, when mice were challenged with the 1457 âspoVG mutant in a foreign body infection
model, only marginal differences in biomasses produced on the infected catheter fragments between
the mutant and the parental strain were observed. These findings suggest that SpoVG is critical for the
PIA-dependent biofilm formation of S. epidermis under in vitro conditions, but is largely dispensable
for biofilm formation of this skin commensal under in vivo conditions
Observation of strong final-state effects in pi+ production in pp collisions at 400 MeV
Differential cross sections of the reactions and have been measured at MeV by detecting the charged
ejectiles in the angular range . The
deduced total cross sections agree well with those published previously for
neighbouring energies. The invariant mass spectra are observed to be strongly
affected by production and final-state interaction. The data are
well described by Monte Carlo simulations including both these effects. The
ratio of and cross sections also compares
favourably to a recent theoretical prediction which suggests a dominance of
