Brain Dopamine and Serotonin Receptors in the Perception of Pain. Positron Emission Tomography Studies in Healthy Subjects
The role of dopamine and serotonin in spinal pain regulation is well established. However, little is known concerning the role of brain dopamine and serotonin in the perception of pain in humans.
The aim of this study was to assess the potential role of brain dopamine and serotonin in determining experimental pain sensitivity in humans using positron emission tomography (PET) and psychophysical methods. A total of 39 healthy subjects participated in the study, and PET imaging was performed to assess brain dopamine D2/D3 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptor availability. In a separate session, sensitivity to pain and touch was assessed with traditional psychophysical methods, allowing the evaluation of potential associations between D2/D3 and 5-HT1A binding and psychophysical responses. The subjects’ responses were also analyzed according to Signal Detection Theory, which enables separate assessment of the subject’s discriminative capacity (sensory factor) and response criterion (non-sensory factor).
The study found that the D2/D3 receptor binding in the right putamen was inversely correlated with pain threshold and response criterion. 5-HT1A binding in cingulate cortex, inferior temporal gyrus and medial prefrontal cortex was inversely correlated with discriminative capacity for touch. Additionally, the response criterion for pain and intensity rating of suprathreshold pain were inversely correlated with 5-HT1A binding in multiple brain areas.
The results suggest that brain D2/D3 receptors and 5-HT1A receptors modulate sensitivity to pain and that the pain modulatory effects may, at least partly, be attributed to influences on the response criterion. 5-HT1A receptors are also involved in the regulation of touch by having an effect on discriminative capacity.Siirretty Doriast

Noise correlations of the ultra-cold Fermi gas in an optical lattice
In this paper we study the density noise correlations of the two component
Fermi gas in optical lattices. Three different type of phases, the BCS-state
(Bardeen, Cooper, and Schieffer), the FFLO-state (Fulde, Ferrel, Larkin, and
Ovchinnikov), and BP (breach pair) state, are considered. We show how these
states differ in their noise correlations. The noise correlations are
calculated not only at zero temperature, but also at non-zero temperatures
paying particular attention to how much the finite temperature effects might
complicate the detection of different phases. Since one-dimensional systems
have been shown to be very promising candidates to observe FFLO states, we
apply our results also to the computation of correlation signals in a
one-dimensional lattice. We find that the density noise correlations reveal
important information about the structure of the underlying order parameter as

Finite temperature phase diagram of a polarized Fermi gas in an optical lattice
We present phase diagrams for a polarized Fermi gas in an optical lattice as
a function of temperature, polarization, and lattice filling factor. We
consider the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO), Sarma or breached pair
(BP), and BCS phases, and the normal state and phase separation. We show that
the FFLO phase appears in a considerable portion of the phase diagram. The
diagrams have two critical points of different nature. We show how various
phases leave clear signatures to momentum distributions of the atoms which can
be observed after time of flight expansion.Comment: Journal versio
Vortex structure in spinor F=2 Bose-Einstein condensates
Extended Gross-Pitaevskii equations for the rotating F=2 condensate in a
harmonic trap are solved both numerically and variationally using trial
functions for each component of the wave function. Axially-symmetric vortex
solutions are analyzed and energies of polar and cyclic states are calculated.
The equilibrium transitions between different phases with changing of the
magnetization are studied. We show that at high magnetization the ground state
of the system is determined by interaction in "density" channel, and at low
magnetization spin interactions play a dominant role. Although there are five
hyperfine states, all the particles are always condensed in one, two or three

Estimation of inbreeding depression on female fertility in the Finnish Ayrshire population
Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data enable the estimation of inbreeding at the genome level. In this study, we estimated inbreeding levels for 19,075 Finnish Ayrshire cows genotyped with a low-density SNP panel (8K). The genotypes were imputed to 50K density, and after quality control, 39,144 SNPs remained for the analysis. Inbreeding coefficients were estimated for each animal based on the percentage of homozygous SNPs (F-PH), runs of homozygosity (F-ROH) and pedigree (F-PED). Phenotypic records were available for 13,712 animals including non-return rate (NRR), number of inseminations (AIS) and interval from first to last insemination (IFL) for heifers and up to three parities for cows, as well as interval from calving to first insemination (ICF) for cows. Average F-PED was 0.02, F-ROH 0.06 and F-PH 0.63. A correlation of 0.71 was found between F-PED and F-ROH, 0.66 between F-PED and F-PH and 0.94 between F-ROH and F-PH. Pedigree-based inbreeding coefficients did not show inbreeding depression in any of the traits. However, when F-ROH or F-PH was used as a covariate, significant inbreeding depression was observed; a 10% increase in F-ROH was associated with 5days longer IFL0 and IFL1, 2weeks longer IFL3 and 3days longer ICF2 compared to non-inbred cows.Peer reviewe
Dopaminergic and serotonergic mechanisms in the modulation of pain : In vivo studies in human brain
Here we review the literature assessing the roles of the brain dopaminergic and serotonergic systems in the modulation of pain as revealed by in vivo human studies using positron emission tomography. In healthy subjects, dopamine D-2/D-3 receptor availability particularly in the striatum and serotonin 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptor availabilities in the cortex predict the subject's response to tonic experimental pain. High availability of dopamine D-2/D-3 or serotonin 5-HT2A receptors is associated with high pain intensity, whereas high availability of 5-HT1A receptors associates with low pain intensity. Chronic neuropathic pain is associated with high striatal dopamine D-2/D-3 receptor availability, for which low endogenous dopamine tone is a plausible explanation, although a compensatory increase in striatal dopamine D-2/D-3 receptor density may also contribute. In contrast, chronic musculoskeletal pain is associated with low baseline availability of striatal dopamine D-2/D-3 receptors. In healthy subjects, brain serotonin 5-HT1A as well as dopamine D-2/D-3 receptor availabilities associate with the subject's response criterion rather than the capacity to discriminate painful thermal stimuli suggesting that these neurotransmitter systems act mainly on non-sensory rather than sensory factors of thermally induced pain experience. Additionally, 5-HT1A receptor availability predicts the subject's discriminative ability but not response criterion for non-painful tactile test stimuli, while no such correlation is observed with dopamine D-2/D-3 receptors. These findings suggest that dopamine acting on striatal dopamine D-2/D-3 receptors and serotonin acting on cortical 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptors contribute to top-down pain regulation in humans.Peer reviewe
Quantum Numbers for Excitations of Bose-Einstein Condensates in 1D Optical Lattices
The excitation spectrum and the band structure of a Bose-Einstein condensate
in a periodic potential are investigated. Analyses within full 3D systems,
finite 1D systems, and ideal periodic 1D systems are compared. We find two
branches of excitations in the spectra of the finite 1D model. The band
structures for the first and (part of) the second band are compared between a
finite 1D and the fully periodic 1D systems, utilizing a new definition of a
effective wavenumber and a phase-slip number. The upper and lower edges of the
first gap coincide well between the two cases. The remaining difference is
explained by the existence of the two branches due to the finite-size effect.Comment: 5 pages, 9 figure
Vortex oscillations in confined Bose-Einstein condensate interacting with 1D optical lattice
We study Bose-Einstein condensate of atomic Boson gases trapped in a
composite potential of a harmonic potential and an optical lattice potential.
We found a series of collective excitations that induces localized vortex
oscillations with a characteristic wavelength. The oscillations might be
observed experimentally when radial confinement is tight. We present the
excitation spectra of the vortex oscillation modes and propose a way to
