Workers\u27 Migration and Remittances in Bangladesh
Bangladesh has sent more than 6.7 million workers to over 140 countries during a period of more than three decades since the mid-1970s. Most of these workers temporarily migrated to work in Middle East and Southeast Asia. This mass movement of temporary migrant workers has, to some extent, eased unemployment pressures on the over-burdened labor market in this highly populated country. More importantly, the remittance transfers received from these migrant workers have reached a phenomenal level of over 10 billion US dollars in 2009, approximately 12 percent of GDP in Bangladesh. This paper analyzes the trends and various other aspects of workers\u27 migration and remittances in Bangladesh. It further discusses the micro and macroeconomic impacts of remittances. While most remittance transfers have been used by migrant-sending households for consumption, there is evidence to show that these transfers have helped reduce poverty in Bangladesh. The analysis presented in this paper further indicates that these remittances may have significant effects on other macroeconomic variables as well
Export-led Growth in Bangladesh: A Time Series Analysis
This article examines time series evidence to investigate the link between exports and economic growth in Bangladesh. Using quarterly data for a period from 1976 to 2003 the article finds that industrial production and exports are cointegrated. The results of an error correction model (ECM) suggest that there is a long-run unidirectional causality from exports to growth in Bangladesh
Image Processing with Dipole-Coupled Nanomagnets: Noise Suppression and Edge Enhancement Detection
Hardware based image processing offers speed and convenience not found in
software-centric approaches. Here, we show theoretically that a two-dimensional
periodic array of dipole-coupled elliptical nanomagnets, delineated on a
piezoelectric substrate, can act as a dynamical system for specific image
processing functions. Each nanomagnet has two stable magnetization states that
encode pixel color (black or white). An image containing black and white pixels
is first converted to voltage states and then mapped into the magnetization
states of a nanomagnet array with magneto-tunneling junctions (MTJs). The same
MTJs are employed to read out the processed pixel colors later. Dipole
interaction between the nanomagnets implements specific image processing tasks
such as noise reduction and edge enhancement detection. These functions are
triggered by applying a global strain to the nanomagnets with a voltage dropped
across the piezoelectric substrate. An image containing an arbitrary number of
black and white pixels can be processed in few nanoseconds with very low energy
cost
Is it Inflation or Inflation Variability? A Note on the Stock Return-Inflation Puzzle
This paper investigates the effects of inflation and inflation variability on the economic and stock market activity within a VAR framework by using U.S data for the 1988:01-2002:12 period. Our results show that the detrimental effects of inflation come from the inflation variability, not the level of inflation itself
Nonformal Education in Improving Quality of Life of Underprivileged Children
This study explores the role of Non-formal Primary Education (NFPE) in improving the quality of the life of underprivileged children in Bangladesh considering their economic, health, environmental issues and life skills. It uses a mixed method approach of research where three NGOs which run NFPE programs were selected purposefully. Data were derived from six NGO officers, nine teachers, ninety students and eighteen guardians by using two sets of questionnaires for NGO officers and teachers, an interview schedule for guardians and 9 focus group discussions with the students. The findings show that there is no income generating program initiated by the organizations for the learners along with education. So, the scope of their income has reduced. But their daily life behavior and skills have improved. Besides, their awareness on health and environmental issues have increased. The findings lead to some recommendations which will give insights to policy makers and professionals engaged in this field
