A microscopic model for Josephson currents
A microscopic model of a Josephson junction between two superconducting
plates is proposed and analysed. For this model, the nonequilibrium steady
state of the total system is explicitly constructed and its properties are
analysed. In particular, the Josephson current is rigorously computed as a
function of the phase difference of the two plates and the typical properties
of the Josephson current are recovered
Goldstone Bosons in Josephson Junctions
For a microscopic model of a Josephson junction the normal coordinates of the
two junction Goldstone bosons are constructed and their dynamical spectrum is
computed. The explicit dependence on the phase difference of the two
superconductors is calculated
Shopping centre siting and modal choice in Belgium: a destination based analysis
Although modal split is only one of the elements considered in decision-making on new shopping malls, it remarkably often arises in arguments of both proponents and opponents. Today, this is also the case in the debate on the planned development of three major shopping malls in Belgium. Inspired by such debates, the present study focuses on the impact of the location of shopping centres on the travel mode choice of the customers. Our hypothesis is that destination-based variables such as embeddedness in the urban fabric, accessibility and mall size influence the travel mode choice of the visitors. Based on modal split data and location characteristics of seventeen existing shopping centres in Belgium, we develop a model for a more sustainable siting policy. The results show a major influence of the location of the shopping centre in relation to the urban form, and of the size of the mall. Shopping centres that are part of a dense urban fabric, measured through population density, are less car dependent. Smaller sites will attract more cyclists and pedestrians. Interestingly, our results deviate significantly from the figures that have been put forward in public debates on the shopping mall issue in Belgium
Cost-benefit analysis of abatement measures for nutrient emission from agriculture
In intensive animal husbandry areas surface water N and P concentrations often remain too high. The Water Framework Directive calls for additional nutrient emission abatement measures. Therefore, costs and benefits for possible agricultural measures in Flanders were first analysed in terms of soil balance surplus. Finally, abatement measures for agriculture, households and industry were set off against each other and ranked according to their cost-efficiency by the Environmental Costing Model. Increased dairy cattle efficiency, winter cover crops and increased pig feed efficiency turn out very cost efficient. Other agricultural measures are less cost efficient than for instance collective treatment for households and industry.nitrogen and phosphorus abatement, surface water, cost efficiency, Environmental Economics and Policy, Livestock Production/Industries,

Gastric Extremely Well-Diferentiated Intestinal-Type Adenocarcinoma: A Challenging Lesion to Achieve Complete Endoscopic Resection
Extremely well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinomas (EWDAs) of the stomach are characterized by surface maturation and their mimicking of intestinal metaplasia. Endoscopically, intramucosal EWDAs are frequently ill defined with indistinct borders due to the pallor of the neoplastic mucosa and the lack of contrast against the background atrophic and metaplastic mucosa. We evaluated the effectiveness of endoscopic resection for EWDAs after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).
Among 872 patients with early gastric cancer, 17 EWDAs were identified (1.9 %). Endoscopically, the flat or depressed type was significantly more common among EWDAs (88.2 %) than among early gastric cancers of other histologies (37.8 %; P < 0.01). The discrepancy between endoscopically estimated tumor size and tumor size as confirmed in pathology reports was significantly greater among EWDAs (18.4 ± 22.0 mm) than among others (5.8 ± 7.5 mm). Involvement of the lateral resection margin was more common (29.4 % vs. 2.5 %; P < 0.05), and complete resection was achieved less often in EWDAs (47.1 % vs. 80.4 %; P = 0.01) compared to the others.
EWDAs are associated with higher rates of incomplete resection after ESD, especially along the lateral margins. Pathologists should alert endoscopists when this diagnosis is made, with its associated risks; and endoscopists should pay particular attention to the extent of these tumors during resection
Divergent mathematical treatments in utility theory
In this paper I study how divergent mathematical treatments affect mathematical modelling, with a special focus on utility theory. In particular I examine recent work on the ranking of information states and the discounting of future utilities, in order to show how, by replacing the standard analytical treatment of the models involved with one based on the framework of Nonstandard Analysis, diametrically opposite results are obtained. In both cases, the choice between the standard and nonstandard treatment amounts to a selection of set-theoretical parameters that cannot be made on purely empirical grounds. The analysis of this phenomenon gives rise to a simple logical account of the relativity of impossibility theorems in economic theory, which concludes the paper

Lymphovascular Invasion in Colorectal Cancer: An Interobserver Variability Study
Background: Lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in colorectal cancer (CRC) is considered a strong stage-independent prognostic factor and influences decisions regarding adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with Stage II tumors. However, the degree of interobserver agreement among pathologists for LVI in CRC is largely unknown. This study was undertaken to examine such interobserver variability, and we hypothesized that the use of immunohistochemical markers for vascular and lymphatic channels could improve interobserver agreement. Design: Fifty cases of AJCC stage II moderately differentiated CRC from 1990 to 2005 from the pathology archives were selected; mucinous, medullary, and other recognized special subtypes were excluded. Fifty H&E slides (one from each case) were circulated to 6 GI pathologists, who independently assessed small and large vessel invasion. No diagnostic guidelines were given to the participating pathologists; each was instructed to apply the criteria for LVI that he or she used in daily practice. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for D2-40 and CD31 was performed on corresponding paraffin blocks. The IHC slides were randomized, recirculated, and rescored for LVI. Results were analyzed by kappa (κ)statistics, which correct for agreement by chance, and for percent agreement. Results: The average κ values were determined for the H&E slides (large and small vessel), CD31 (small vessel), and D2-40 (small vessel) (Figure 1). Agreement was fair for H&E small vessel invasion (κ = 0.28; 95%CI 0.22–0.34). The least agreement was seen in interpretation of H&E large vessel invasion (κ = 0.18; 95%CI 0.11–0.26). Agreement was not improved by use of immunohistochemical stains: CD31 (large vessel, κ = 0.42, 95%CI 0.20–0.63, small vessel, κ = 0.26, 95%CI 0.10–0.42) and D2-40 (κ = 0.32, 95%CI 0.21–0.42). Conclusions: Interobserver variability in diagnosis of LVI was substantial on H&E slides and did not improve upon use of IHC. Agreement in evaluation of large vessel invasion was only slightly higher than would be seen by chance alone. This study highlights the need for criteria in evaluation of lymphovascular invasion, as this assessment may impact patient prognosis and thus change the course of clinical treatment
Proof of Bose-Einstein Condensation for Interacting Gases with a One-Particle Spectral Gap
Using a specially tuned mean-field Bose gas as a reference system, we
establish a positive lower bound on the condensate density for continuous Bose
systems with superstable two-body interactions and a finite gap in the
one-particle excitations spectrum, i.e. we prove for the first time standard
homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensation for such interacting systems
