100 Years of Changes in Ohio Peatlands

In 1991, 2% of these peatlands continued to support typical peatland flora. Of the 98% that have been destroyed, conversion of peatlands to agricultural production (27,478 ha) was the major factor in causing peatland loss
1st National ring trial on detection of antibodies to trichinella in pigs
Regulation (EC) 2075/2005 ensures official inspection of food of animal origin with specific rules on official controls for Trichinella in meat. Regarding certification of Trichinella-free farms, this regulation recommends serological methods for monitoring. The aim of the ring trial was to evaluate a new ELISA regarding test accuracy and practical usage. The participants of the ring trial tested 22 sera prepared by the German National Reference Laboratory for Trichinellosis and additionally 22 field samples from their own sample collection using the commercial ELISA kit. This ELISA demonstrated a very good diagnostic sensitivity and robustness in the ring trial
Ion dynamics in a linear radio-frequency trap with a single cooling laser
We analyse the possibility of cooling ions with a single laser beam, due to
the coupling between the three components of their motion induced by the
Coulomb interaction. For this purpose, we numerically study the dynamics of ion
clouds of up to 140 particles, trapped in a linear quadrupole potential and
cooled with a laser beam propagating in the radial plane. We use Molecular
Dynamics simulations and model the laser cooling by a stochastic process. For
each component of the motion, we systematically study the dependence of the
temperature with the anisotropy of the trapping potential. Results obtained
using the full radio-frequency (rf) potential are compared to those of the
corresponding pseudo-potential. In the rf case, the rotation symmetry of the
potential has to be broken to keep ions inside the trap. Then, as for the
pseudo-potential case, we show that the efficiency of the Coulomb coupling to
thermalize the components of motion depends on the geometrical configuration of
the cloud. Coulomb coupling appears to be not efficient when the ions organise
as a line or a pancake and the three components of motion reach the same
temperature only if the cloud extends in three dimensions
Feshbach spectroscopy and analysis of the interaction potentials of ultracold sodium
We have studied magnetic Feshbach resonances in an ultracold sample of Na
prepared in the absolute hyperfine ground state. We report on the observation
of three s-, eight d-, and three g-wave Feshbach resonances, including a more
precise determination of two known s-wave resonances, and one s-wave resonance
at a magnetic field exceeding 200mT. Using a coupled-channels calculation we
have improved the sodium ground-state potentials by taking into account these
new experimental data, and derived values for the scattering lengths. In
addition, a description of the molecular states leading to the Feshbach
resonances in terms of the asymptotic-bound-state model is presented.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Terahertz frequency standard based on three-photon coherent population trapping
A scheme for a THz frequency standard based on three-photon coherent
population trapping in stored ions is proposed. Assuming the propagation
directions of the three lasers obey the phase matching condition, we show that
stability of few 10 at one second can be reached with a precision
limited by power broadening to in the less favorable case. The
referenced THz signal can be propagated over long distances, the useful
information being carried by the relative frequency of the three optical

Feshbach spectroscopy and scattering properties of ultracold Li+Na mixtures
We have observed 26 interspecies Feshbach resonances at fields up to 2050 G
in ultracold Li+Na mixtures for different spin-state combinations.
Applying the asymptotic bound-state model to assign the resonances, we have
found that most resonances have d-wave character. This analysis serves as
guidance for a coupled-channel calculation, which uses modified interaction
potentials to describe the positions of the Feshbach resonances well within the
experimental uncertainty and to calculate their widths. The scattering length
derived from the improved interaction potentials is experimentally confirmed
and deviates from previously reported values in sign and magnitude. We give
prospects for Li+Na and predict broad Feshbach resonances suitable

Intestinal epithelial cells: at the interface of the microbiota and mucosal immunity.
The intestinal epithelium forms a barrier between the microbiota and the rest of the body. In addition, beyond acting as a physical barrier, the function of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) in sensing and responding to microbial signals is increasingly appreciated and likely has numerous implications for the vast network of immune cells within and below the intestinal epithelium. IECs also respond to factors produced by immune cells, and these can regulate IEC barrier function, proliferation and differentiation, as well as influence the composition of the microbiota. The mechanisms involved in IEC-microbe-immune interactions, however, are not fully characterized. In this review, we explore the ability of IECs to direct intestinal homeostasis by orchestrating communication between intestinal microbes and mucosal innate and adaptive immune cells during physiological and inflammatory conditions. We focus primarily on the most recent findings and call attention to the numerous remaining unknowns regarding the complex crosstalk between IECs, the microbiota and intestinal immune cells
