A mixed ultrasoft/normconserved pseudopotential scheme
A variant of the Vanderbilt ultrasoft pseudopotential scheme, where the
normconservation is released for only one or a few angular channels, is
presented. Within this scheme some difficulties of the truly ultrasoft
pseudopotentials are overcome without sacrificing the pseudopotential softness.
i) Ghost states are easily avoided without including semicore shells. ii) The
ultrasoft pseudo-charge-augmentation functions can be made more soft. iii) The
number of nonlocal operators is reduced. The scheme will be most useful for
transition metals, and the feasibility and accuracy of the scheme is
demonstrated for the 4d transition metal rhodium.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Safety and Potential Efficacy of Gemfibrozil as a Supportive Treatment for Children with Late Infantile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis and Other Lipid Storage Disorders.
Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (NCL), also known as Batten disease, is a group of genetically distinct lysosomal disorders that mainly affect the central nervous system, resulting in progressive motor and cognitive decline primarily in children. Multiple distinct genes involved in the metabolism of lipids have been identified to date with various mutations in this family of diseases. There is no cure for these diseases but some new therapeutic approaches have been tested that offer more hope than the standard palliative care. Many of the therapeutic advances require invasive procedures but some progress in slowing the disease has been found and more options can be expected in the future. We also review the literature on children with disease/conditions other than NCL for the non-invasive use, safety, and tolerability of a lipid-lowering drug, gemfibrozil, as a potential treatment for NCLs. Gemfibrozil has shown efficacy in an animal model of NCL known as CLN2 (late infantile classic juvenile) and has been shown to be safe for lowering lipids in children. Among the 200 non-NCL children found in the published literature who were treated with gemfibrozil for NCL-related problems, only 3 experienced adverse events, including 2 with muscle pain and 1 with localized linear IgA bullous dermatitis. We conclude that gemfibrozil is safe for long-term use in children, causes minimal adverse events, is well tolerated, and may delay the progression of NCLs. Gemfibrozil may potentially be an alternative to more invasive therapeutic approaches currently under investigation and has the potential to be used in combination with other therapeutic approaches
The Shortest Period Detached Binary White Dwarf System
We identify SDSS J010657.39-100003.3 (hereafter J0106-1000) as the shortest
period detached binary white dwarf (WD) system currently known. We targeted
J0106-1000 as part of our radial velocity program to search for companions
around known extremely low-mass (ELM, ~ 0.2 Msol) WDs using the 6.5m MMT. We
detect peak-to-peak radial velocity variations of 740 km/s with an orbital
period of 39.1 min. The mass function and optical photometry rule out a
main-sequence star companion. Follow-up high-speed photometric observations
obtained at the McDonald 2.1m telescope reveal ellipsoidal variations from the
distorted primary but no eclipses. This is the first example of a tidally
distorted WD. Modeling the lightcurve, we constrain the inclination angle of
the system to be 67 +- 13 deg. J0106-1000 contains a pair of WDs (0.17 Msol
primary + 0.43 Msol invisible secondary) at a separation of 0.32 Rsol. The two
WDs will merge in 37 Myr and most likely form a core He-burning single subdwarf
star. J0106-1000 is the shortest timescale merger system currently known. The
gravitational wave strain from J0106-1000 is at the detection limit of the
Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). However, accurate ephemeris and
orbital period measurements may enable LISA to detect J0106-1000 above the

Broken-symmetry-adapted Green function theory of condensed matter systems:towards a vector spin-density-functional theory
The group theory framework developed by Fukutome for a systematic analysis of
the various broken symmetry types of Hartree-Fock solutions exhibiting spin
structures is here extended to the general many body context using spinor-Green
function formalism for describing magnetic systems. Consequences of this theory
are discussed for examining the magnetism of itinerant electrons in nanometric
systems of current interest as well as bulk systems where a vector spin-density
form is required, by specializing our work to spin-density-functional
formalism. We also formulate the linear response theory for such a system and
compare and contrast them with the recent results obtained for localized
electron systems. The various phenomenological treatments of itinerant magnetic
systems are here unified in this group-theoretical description.Comment: 17 page

A real-space, rela-time method for the dielectric function
We present an algorithm to calculate the linear response of periodic systems
in the time-dependent density functional thoery, using a real-space
representation of the electron wave functions and calculating the dynamics in
real time. The real-space formulation increases the efficiency for calculating
the interaction, and the real-time treatment decreases storage requirements and
the allows the entire frequency-dependent response to be calculated at once. We
give as examples the dielectric functions of a simple metal, lithium, and an

Model for nucleation in GaAs homoepitaxy derived from first principles
The initial steps of MBE growth of GaAs on beta 2-reconstructed GaAs(001) are
investigated by performing total energy and electronic structure calculations
using density functional theory and a repeated slab model of the surface. We
study the interaction and clustering of adsorbed Ga atoms and the adsorption of
As_2 molecules onto Ga atom clusters adsorbed on the surface. The stable nuclei
consist of bound pairs of Ga adatoms, which originate either from dimerization
or from an indirect interaction mediated through the substrate reconstruction.
As_2 adsorption is found to be strongly exothermic on sites with a square array
of four Ga dangling bonds. Comparing two scenarios where the first As_2 gets
incorporated in the incomplete surface layer, or alternatively in a new added
layer, we find the first scenario to be preferable. In summary, the
calculations suggest that nucleation of a new atomic layer is most likely on
top of those surface regions where a partial filling of trenches in the surface
