Linkages between fishermen and researchers in marine fisheries-an analysis

Fisheries play an important role in our country's economic development. In India one million active fishermen are engaged in marine fishing, with about 0.2 million in mechanized sector, 0.17 million in motorized sector and the rest in the artisanal sector. Among the fisher folk engaged in marine fisheries, about 0.7 million work as labourers of whom 65.00 per cent are engaged in artisanal fishin

Analysis of the linkages between fishermen and extension personnel in marine fisheries in Kerala

In marine fisheries the linkages between the fishermen and the extension system play an important role in technology transfer and its adoption. Research studies on linkages in marine fisheries are very limited. So thls study was taken up to find out the linkage activities through which both the systems are contacting each other. It was found that 60 % of the fishermen had medium level of linkage of with the extension personnel followed by low (21.33%) and high (19.34%) linkage level. The paper also highlights the frequency of linkage and the level of perception about linkages between the two systems. The paper implies that the linkage activities need to be enhanced so as to derive an overall development in the fisheries sector

Bibliography of Contributions from Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute

The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute in the course of over two decades since its inception in 1947, has published the work done by a large number of scientific staff at the headquarters station and the outstation establishments in varied periodicals, memoirs, proceedings of the occasional symposia conducted by the world organisations etc., the total number of publications amounting to about a thousands, covering a wide range of topics in the fields of fishery biology, marine biology, physiology and other related disciplines. The need for an up to date list of publications for ready reference has been keenly felt by the scientific workers of this Institute and other organisations. This bulletin has been prepared by Shri K. Kanakasabapathi of the Institute in addition to his normal official duties. I place on record my appreciation of him for carefully compiling and indexing the list with meticulous care

Catalogue of Serials and Expedition Reports in the Library of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute

The present Bulletin is the second in the series issued by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute and lists the Serials and Expedition Reports available in the library. In addition to the Publications catalogued, the library has over 3000 books and a very large number of reprints. The Institute’s library is one of the best on fisheries and marine sciences in the Indian Ocean Region and it is hoped that a catalogue of this kind will be useful to those interested in getting an idea of its holdings. Quite a large number of the serials are incomplete at present but it is proposed as far as possible to complete, during the ensuing five-year plan period, those which are of direct interest to the work of the Institute

Bibliography (Part - 2) The publications by the staff of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute 1986-90

Get PDF
A bibliography was published in April, 1986 listing the publications of the staff of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute from 1948 to 1985. Since then voluminous literature have been produced by the staff of the Institute which called for, within a short period, the updating of the bibliography . The present bibliography published as Part-2 of the earlier one, incorporates all the publications of the staff for the five year period from 1986 to 1990

Beta-Glucan-Rich Extract fromPleurotus sajor-caju(Fr.) Singer Prevents Obesity and Oxidative Stress in C57BL/6J Mice Fed on a High-Fat Diet

Mushrooms have been used in folk medicine for thousands of years. In this study, the effect ofβ-glucan-rich extract ofP. sajor-caju(GE) on lipid lowering and antioxidant potential was assessed in C57BL/6J mice fed on a high-fat diet. Obesity was induced in C57BL/6J mice by feeding a high-fat diet. The control groups in this study were ND (for normal diet) and HFD (for high-fat diet). The treated groups were ND240 (for normal diet) (240 mg/kg b.w) and HFD60, HFD120, and HFD240 (for high-fat diet), where the mice were administrated with three dosages of GE (60, 120, and 240 mg GE/kg b.w). Metformin (2 mg/kg b.w) served as positive control. GE-treated groups showed significantly reduced body weight, serum lipid, and liver enzymes levels. GE also attenuated protein carbonyl and lipid hydroperoxide levels by increasing the enzymic antioxidants (SOD, CAT, and GPx) activities in the mice. GE-treated groups induced the expression of hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) and adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL) while downregulated the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ), sterol regulatory binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), and lipoprotein lipase (LPL). Hence, GE prevented weight gain in the mice by inducing lipolysis and may be valuable in the formulation of adjuvant therapy for obesity.</jats:p

Challenges in sustainability reporting: evidence from Malaysia / Ho Wai Kee … [et al.]

Get PDF
This paper aims to explore the challenges faced by companies in preparing a sustainability report. Interviews were conducted with the preparers of the sustainability report, consultants and directors from Malaysian public-listed companies. The findings of this study show that sustainability reporting can be hindered by the challenges faced by companies. Analysis of the interview transcripts revealed six key challenges. These include lack of board leadership, lack of board expertise, lack of management expertise, negative attitudes towards sustainability, difficulty to quantify sustainability impact and lack of an effective information system. This study provides practical guidance to companies and policy-makers on the challenges that need to be addressed to accelerate the sustainability reporting process. However, the sustainability issues discussed in this study is from the internal stakeholders’ perspective. We need to explore the sustainability issues from the external stakeholders’ perspective in our future study as these issues may further add to our understanding of the sustainability reporting process
