    Head-on collision of viscous vortex rings

    The head-on collision of two identical axisymmetric viscous vortex rings is studied through direct simulations of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The initial vorticity distributions considered are those of Hill's spherical vortex and of rings with circular Gaussian cores, each at Reynolds numbers of about 350 and 1000. The Reynolds number is defined by Gamma/Nu, the ratio of circulation to viscosity. As the vortices approach each other by self-induction, the radii increase by mutual induction, and vorticy cancels through viscous cross-diffusion across the collision plane. Following contact, the vorticity distribution in the core forms a head-tail structure (for the cases considered). The characteristic time of vorticity annihilation is compared with that of a 3D collision experiment and 3D numerical simulations. It is found that the annihilation time is somewhat longer in the axisymmetric case than it is in the symmetry plane of the experiment and 3D numerical simulation. By comparing the annihilatiom time with a viscous timescale and a circulation timescale, it is deduced that both the strain rate due to local effects and to 3D vorticity realignment are important

    Inelastic behavior of structural components

    A more accurate procedure was developed for the determination of the inelastic behavior of structural components. The actual stress-strain curve for the mathematical of the structure was utilized to generate the force-deformation relationships for the structural elements, rather than using simplified models such as elastic-plastic, bilinear and trilinear approximations. relationships were generated for beam elements with various types of cross sections. In the generational of these curves, stress or load reversals, kinematic hardening and hysteretic behavior were taken into account. Intersections between loading and unloading branches were determined through an iterative process. Using the inelastic properties obtained, the plastic static response of some simple structural systems composed of beam elements was computed. Results were compared with known solutions, indicating a considerable improvement over response predictions obtained by means of simplified approximations used in previous investigations

    An investigation of the instability frequency was undertaken. Measurements revealed that the hot wire probe induces and sustains stable upstream oscillation of the free shear layer. The characteristics of the free shear layer tone are found to be different from the slit jet wedge edgetone phenomenon. The shear tone induced by a plane wedge in a plane free shear layer was then examined in order to further document the phenomenon. The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the tone fundamental show agreement with the spatial stability theory. A comprehensive summary of the results is also included

    Discriminative Tandem Features for HMM-based EEG Classification

    Abstract—We investigate the use of discriminative feature extractors in tandem configuration with generative EEG classification system. Existing studies on dynamic EEG classification typically use hidden Markov models (HMMs) which lack discriminative capability. In this paper, a linear and a non-linear classifier are discriminatively trained to produce complementary input features to the conventional HMM system. Two sets of tandem features are derived from linear discriminant analysis (LDA) projection output and multilayer perceptron (MLP) class-posterior probability, before appended to the standard autoregressive (AR) features. Evaluation on a two-class motor-imagery classification task shows that both the proposed tandem features yield consistent gains over the AR baseline, resulting in significant relative improvement of 6.2% and 11.2 % for the LDA and MLP features respectively.
