Stellar structure and compact objects before 1940: Towards relativistic astrophysics
Since the mid-1920s, different strands of research used stars as "physics
laboratories" for investigating the nature of matter under extreme densities
and pressures, impossible to realize on Earth. To trace this process this paper
is following the evolution of the concept of a dense core in stars, which was
important both for an understanding of stellar evolution and as a testing
ground for the fast-evolving field of nuclear physics. In spite of the divide
between physicists and astrophysicists, some key actors working in the
cross-fertilized soil of overlapping but different scientific cultures
formulated models and tentative theories that gradually evolved into more
realistic and structured astrophysical objects. These investigations culminated
in the first contact with general relativity in 1939, when J. Robert
Oppenheimer and his students George Volkoff and Hartland Snyder systematically
applied the theory to the dense core of a collapsing neutron star. This
pioneering application of Einstein's theory to an astrophysical compact object
can be regarded as a milestone in the path eventually leading to the emergence

75th Anniversary of ‘Existence of Electromagnetic-Hydrodynamic Waves’
We have recently passed the 75th anniversary of one of the most important
results in solar and space physics: Hannes Alfv\'en's discovery of Alfv\'en
waves and the Alfv\'en speed. To celebrate the anniversary, this article
recounts some major episodes in the history of MHD waves. Following an
initially cool reception, Alfv\'en's ideas were propelled into the spotlight by
Fermi's work on cosmic rays, the new mystery of coronal heating and, as
scientific perception of interplanetary space shifted dramatically and the
space race started, detection of Alfv\'en waves in the solar wind. From then
on, interest in MHD waves boomed, laying the foundations for modern remote
observations of MHD waves in the Sun, coronal seismology and some of today's
leading theories of coronal heating and solar wind acceleration. In 1970,
Alfv\'en received the Nobel Prize for his work in MHD, including these
discoveries. The article concludes with some reflection about what the history
implies about the way we do science, especially the advantages and pitfalls of

INVASIVESNET towards an International Association for Open Knowledge on Invasive Alien Species
In a world where invasive alien species (IAS) are recognised as one of the major threats to biodiversity, leading scientists from five continents have come together to propose the concept of developing an international association for open knowledge and open data on IAS—termed “INVASIVESNET”. This new association will facilitate greater understanding and improved management of invasive alien species (IAS) and biological invasions globally, by developing a sustainable network of networks for effective knowledge exchange. In addition to their inclusion in the CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity, the increasing ecological, social, cultural and economic impacts associated with IAS have driven the development of multiple legal instruments and policies. This increases the need for greater co-ordination, co-operation, and information exchange among scientists, management, the community of practice and the public.
INVASIVESNET will be formed by linking new and existing networks of interested stakeholders including international and national expert working groups and initiatives, individual scientists, database managers, thematic open access journals, environmental agencies, practitioners, managers, industry, non-government organisations, citizens and educational bodies. The association will develop technical tools and cyberinfrastructure for the collection, management and dissemination of data and information on IAS; create an effective communication platform for global stakeholders; and promote coordination and collaboration through international meetings, workshops, education, training and outreach.
To date, the sustainability of many strategic national and international initiatives on IAS have unfortunately been hampered by time-limited grants or funding cycles. Recognising that IAS initiatives need to be globally coordinated and ongoing, we aim to develop a sustainable knowledge sharing association to connect the outputs of IAS research and to inform the consequential management and societal challenges arising from IAS introductions. INVASIVESNET will provide a dynamic and enduring network of networks to ensure the continuity of connections among the IAS community of practice, science and management
Interspecific Hybridization and Mitochondrial Introgression in Invasive Carcinus Shore Crabs
Interspecific hybridization plays an important role in facilitating adaptive
evolutionary change. More specifically, recent studies have demonstrated that
hybridization may dramatically influence the establishment, spread, and impact
of invasive populations. In Japan, previous genetic evidence for the presence of
two non-native congeners, the European green crab Carcinus
maenas and the Mediterranean green crab C.
aestuarii, has raised questions regarding the possibility of
hybridization between these sister species. Here I present analysis based on
both nuclear microsatellites and the mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit
I (COI) gene which unambiguously argues for a hybrid origin of Japanese
Carcinus. Despite the presence of mitochondrial lineages
derived from both C. maenas and C. aestuarii,
the Japanese population is panmictic at nuclear loci and has achieved
cytonuclear equilibrium throughout the sampled range in Japan. Furthermore,
analysis of admixture at nuclear loci indicates dramatic introgression of the
C. maenas mitochondrial genome into a predominantly
C. aestuarii nuclear background. These patterns, along with
inferences drawn from the observational record, argue for a hybridization event
pre-dating the arrival of Carcinus in Japan. The clarification
of both invasion history and evolutionary history afforded by genetic analysis
provides information that may be critically important to future studies aimed at
assessing risks posed by invasive Carcinus populations to Japan
and the surrounding region
