    Surface Critical Behavior in Systems with Absorbing States

    We present a general scaling theory for the surface critical behavior of non-equilibrium systems with phase transitions into absorbing states. The theory allows for two independent surface exponents which satisfy generalized hyperscaling relations. As an application we study a generalized version of directed percolation with two absorbing states. We find two distinct surface universality classes associated with inactive and reflective walls. Our results indicate that the exponents associated with these two surface universality classes are closely connected.Comment: latex, 4 pages, to appear in PR

    Safety climate in the service industries: the example of catering operations

    The policy of self-regulation, which is central to occupational safety and health law in the United. Kingdom, is reviewed in the context of the catering industry. The influence of service and service quality on selfregulation and safety climate is considered. Some previously unpublished fiudings from a larger study on the factors affecting safety behaviour in lecturer chefs are reported and examined in terms of the above. It is suggested that the traditional autonomy and autocracy of chefs in catering organisations give them a pivotal role in self-regulation. In addition, the pursuit of service quality influences the chefs in certain ways, some of which may be negative in terms of safety management. It is argued that the pivotal role of chefs in delivering service quality can potentially adversely affect his or her role in safety management. Finally, it is proposed that the conflict between safety and production in the service industries may be more acute than in manufacturing because of the need for worker and, more particularly. supervisor concurrence rather than mere compliance with service quality strategies

    Quasars in rich galaxy clusters

    The evolution of AGN activity in rich clusters of galaxies is found to be approximately 5 times more rapid than that in poor clusters. This rapid evolution may be driven by evolution in the dynamics of galaxy cluster cores. Results from our spectroscopic studies of galaxies associated with quasars are consistent with this scenario, in that bright AGN are preferentially found in regions of lower velocity dispersion. Alternately, the evolution may be driven by formation of a dense intra-cluster medium (ICM). Galaxies close to quasars in rich cluster cores are much bluer (presumably gas rich) than galaxies in the cores of other rich clusters, in support of this model

    Isoscalar giant resonances, being the archetypal forms of collective nuclear behavior, have been studied extensively for decades with the goal of constraining bulk nuclear properties of the equation of state, as well as for modeling dynamical behaviors within stellar environments. An important such mode is the isoscalar electric giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) that can be understood as a radially symmetric density vibration within the saturated nuclear volume. The field has a few key open questions, which have been proposed and remain unresolved. One of the more provocative questions is the extra high-energy strength in the A90A\approx 90 region, which manifested in large percentages of the E0E0 sum rule in 92^{92}Zr and 92^{92}Mo above the main ISGMR peak. The purpose of this article is to introduce these questions within the context of experimental investigations into the phenomena in the zirconium and molybdenum isotopic chains, and to address, via a discussion of previously published and preliminary results, the implications of recent experimental efforts on extraction of the nuclear incompressibility from this data.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, invited to be submitted to a special issue of EPJA honoring Prof. P.     Brittle extension of the continental crust along a rooted system of low-angle normal faults: Colorado River extensional corridor

    A transect across the 100 km wide Colorado River extensional corridor of mid-Tertiary age shows that the upper 10 to 15 km of crystalline crust extended along an imbricate system of brittle low-angle normal faults. The faults cut gently down a section in the NE-direction of tectonic transport from a headwall breakaway in the Old Woman Mountains, California. Successively higher allochthons above a basal detachment fault are futher displaced from the headwall, some as much as tens of kilometers. Allochthonous blocks are tilted toward the headwall as evidenced by the dip of the cappoing Tertiary strata and originally horizontal Proterozoic diabase sheets. On the down-dip side of the corridor in Arizona, the faults root under the unbroken Hualapai Mountains and the Colorado Plateau. Slip on faults at all exposed levels of the crust was unidirectional. Brittle thinning above these faults affected the entire upper crust, and wholly removed it locally along the central corridor or core complex region. Isostatic uplift exposed metamorphic core complexes in the domed footwall. These data support a model that the crust in California moved out from under Arizona along an asymmetric, rooted normal-slip shear system. Ductile deformation must have accompanied mid-Tertiary crustal extension at deeper structural levels in Arizona

    Management of Phytophthora cinnamomi for biodiversity conservation in Australia: Part 2. National best practice guidelines

    Disease in natural ecosystems of Australia, caused by the introduced plant pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi, is listed as a key threatening process under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The Act requires the Australian Government to prepare and implement a threat abatement plan for nationally coordinated action to mitigate the harm caused by P. cinnamomi to Australian species, particularly threatened flora, fauna and ecological communities. The .National Threat Abatement Plan for Dieback Caused by the Root-Rot Fungus Phytophthora cinnamomi. (NTAP) was released in 2001 (Environment Australia, 2001). The NTAP is designed to promote a common understanding of the national threat P. cinnamomi poses to biodiversity in Australia. This project, funded by the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Heritage (DEH), is one of the most significant actions to be implemented from the NTAP to date. The project has two major components: * to review current management approaches and identify benchmarks for best practice * the development of risk assessment criteria and a system for prioritising management of assets that are or could be threatened by P. cinnamomi. The project outputs are presented in a four-part document entitled Management of Phytophthora cinnamomi for Biodiversity Conservation in Australia: Part 1 - A Review of Current Management Part 2 - National Best Practice Guidelines Part 3 - Risk Assessment for Threats to Ecosystems, Species and Communities: A Review Part 4 - Risk Assessment Models for Species, Ecological Communities and Areas. A model of best practice was developed which encompasses all the components necessary for an informed and integrated approach to P. cinnamomi management, from strategic through to on-ground management. The current document (Part 1 . A Review of Current Management) thoroughly reviews the approaches to P. cinnamomi management in Australia within the context of the best practice model
