This report contains a description of field and laboratory tension tests carried out from October 1966 to February 1967. The direct tension tests were made using a tension box apparatus constructed in September 1966 at the Division of Building Research, NRC, Ottawa. Most of the tests have been made on Sphagnum peat from the Mer Bleue peat bog area near Ottawa. The report also contains a discussion of beam tests and other methods for determining the tensile strength of soils. Finally, the ultimate bearing capacity of a peat deposit and the influence of the tensile strength on the bearing capacity are discussed.Peer reviewed: NoNRC publication: Ye
