Polarized radio emission over the southern Galactic plane at 2.4 GHz

    Get PDF
Polarimetric results from the Parkes 2.4-GHz survey of the southern Galactic plane are presented. These take the form of a series of images, detailing the polarized intensity and vector position angles over the survey area. The observations were made using the 64-m Parkes radio telescope, and cover the Galactic plane within the region 238°≤l≤5°, with a latitude range of at least |b|≤5°, with some coverage to b = +7° and b = -8°. The resolution of the images is 10.4 arcmin. The rms noise of the polarized intensity images is 11 mJy beam area-1 (5.3 mK), and the rms variation in the vector position angles is of the order of several dgrees. The images show many polarized structures, over a wide range of intensities and angular sizes. Bright, extended regions of polarized emission (of the order of 5° across) are detected, including the Vela supernova remnant and a large 'cap' structure appearing to the north of Sgr A. A quasi-uniform 'background' component of faint, patchy emission is seen over the length of the survey. This faint component appears to originate over a range of distances, out to greater than 5 kpc, and shows considerable structure in the orientations of the polarization vectors. Several bright H II complexes are seen to exhibit bipolar, depolarizing 'plumes', several degrees in length, which are interpreted as outflows of low-density thermal material (with densities in the range 1-10 cm-3)

Template banks to search for compact binaries with spinning components in gravitational wave data

Gravitational waves from coalescing compact binaries are one of the most promising sources for detectors such as LIGO, Virgo and GEO600. If the components of the binary posess significant angular momentum (spin), as is likely to be the case if one component is a black hole, spin-induced precession of a binary's orbital plane causes modulation of the gravitational-wave amplitude and phase. If the templates used in a matched-filter search do not accurately model these effects then the sensitivity, and hence the detection rate, will be reduced. We investigate the ability of several search pipelines to detect gravitational waves from compact binaries with spin. We use the post-Newtonian approximation to model the inspiral phase of the signal and construct two new template banks using the phenomenological waveforms of Buonanno, Chen and Vallisneri. We compare the performance of these template banks to that of banks constructed using the stationary phase approximation to the non-spinning post-Newtonian inspiral waveform currently used by LIGO and Virgo in the search for compact binary coalescence. We find that, at the same false alarm rate, a search pipeline using phenomenological templates is no more effective than a pipeline which uses non-spinning templates. We recommend the continued use of the non-spinning stationary phase template bank until the false alarm rate associated with templates which include spin effects can be substantially reduced.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure

The Effect of Weak Interactions on the Ultra-Relativistic Bose-Einstein Condensation Temperature

We calculate the ultra-relativistic Bose-Einstein condensation temperature of a complex scalar field with weak lambda Phi^4 interaction. We show that at high temperature and finite density we can use dimensional reduction to produce an effective three-dimensional theory which then requires non-perturbative analysis. For simplicity and ease of implementation we illustrate this process with the linear delta expansion.Comment: Latex2e, 12 pages, three eps figures, replacement with additional discussion and extra figur

Indigenous knowledges and development: a postcolonial caution

    Get PDF
As a result of the failure of formal top-down development, there has recently been increased interest in the possibilities of drawing upon the indigenous knowledges of those in the communities involved, in an attempt to produce more effective development strategies. The concept of indigenous knowledge calls for the inclusion of local voices and priorities, and promises empowerment through ownership of the process. However, there has been little critical examination of the ways in which indigenous knowledges have been included in the development process. Drawing upon postcolonial theory, this article suggests that indigenous knowledges are often drawn into development by both theorists and development institutions in a very limited way, failing to engage with other ways of perceiving development, and thus missing the possibility of devising more challenging alternatives

Plasma Magnetosphere Formation Around Oscillating Magnetized Neutron Stars

The notion of death line of rotating pulsars is applied to model of oscillating neutron stars. It is shown that the magnetosphere of typical non-rotating oscillating stars may not contain secondary plasma to support the generation of radio emission in the region of open field lines of plasma magnetosphere.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc

Long-term renal function in children with Wilms Tumour and constitutional WT1 pathogenic variant

BACKGROUND: Wilms tumour (WT) survivors, especially patients with associated syndromes or genitourinary anomalies due to constitutional WT1 pathogenic variant, have increased risk of kidney failure. We describe the long-term kidney function in children with WT and WT1 pathogenic variant to inform the surgical strategy and oncological management of such complex children. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of patients with WT and constitutional WT1 pathogenic variant treated at a single centre between 1993 and 2016, reviewing genotype, phenotype, tumour histology, laterality, treatment, patient survival, and kidney outcome. RESULTS: We identified 25 patients (60% male, median age at diagnosis 14 months, range 4–74 months) with WT1 deletion (4), missense (2), nonsense (8), frameshift (7), or splice site (4) pathogenic variant. Thirteen (52%) had bilateral disease, 3 (12%) had WT-aniridia, 1 had incomplete Denys-Drash syndrome, 11 (44%) had genitourinary malformation, and 10 (40%) had no phenotypic anomalies. Patient survival was 100% and 3 patients were in remission after relapse at median follow-up of 9 years. Seven patients (28%) commenced chronic dialysis of which 3 were after bilateral nephrectomies. The overall kidney survival for this cohort as mean time to start of dialysis was 13.38 years (95% CI: 10.3–16.4), where 7 patients experienced kidney failure at a median of 5.6 years. All of these 7 patients were subsequently transplanted. In addition, 2 patients have stage III and stage IV chronic kidney disease and 12 patients have albuminuria and/or treatment with ACE inhibitors. Four patients (3 frameshift; 1 WT1 deletion) had normal blood pressure and kidney function without proteinuria at follow-up from 1.5 to 12 years. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the known high risk of kidney disease in patients with WT and constitutional WT1 pathogenic variant, nearly two-thirds of patients had sustained native kidney function, suggesting that nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) should be attempted when possible without compromising oncological risk. Larger international studies are needed for accurate assessment of WT1genotype-kidney function phenotype correlation

On the Divergence of Perturbation Theory. Steps Towards a Convergent Series

The mechanism underlying the divergence of perturbation theory is exposed. This is done through a detailed study of the violation of the hypothesis of the Dominated Convergence Theorem of Lebesgue using familiar techniques of Quantum Field Theory. That theorem governs the validity (or lack of it) of the formal manipulations done to generate the perturbative series in the functional integral formalism. The aspects of the perturbative series that need to be modified to obtain a convergent series are presented. Useful tools for a practical implementation of these modifications are developed. Some resummation methods are analyzed in the light of the above mentioned mechanism.Comment: 42 pages, Latex, 4 figure
