Effect of sterilization by gamma radiation on nano-mechanical properties of teeth
NOTICE: this is the author’s version of a work that was accepted for publication in Dental Materials. Changes resulting from the publishing process, such as peer review, editing, corrections, structural formatting, and other quality control mechanisms may not be reflected in this document. Changes may have been made to this work since it was submitted for publication. A definitive version was subsequently published in Dental Materials, [VOL 24, ISSUE 8, (2008)] DOI: 10.1016/j.dental.2008.02.016.Objectives: Extracted teeth used in dental research need to be considered infective and hence be sterilized without the materials' properties being altered. This study examined the effect of gamma radiation on the nano-mechanical properties of dentin and enamel of extracted human third molars. Methods: Whole teeth were sterilized using gamma radiation doses of 7kGy and 35kGy, respectively; teeth of the control group were not treated with gamma radiation. Crowns were sectioned occlusally and polished. Elastic modulus and hardness were tested using atomic force microscopy with nano-indentations under wet conditions. Results: The authors found no significant dose-response relationship in elastic modulus or hardness in either dentin or enamel. Significance: Nano-indentation is a common technique for the determination of local mechanical properties in biological hard tissues. Gamma radiation is an efficient way to sterilize extracted teeth while alteration of dentin and enamel mechanical properties are minimized
Exact properties of Frobenius numbers and fraction of the symmetric semigroups in the weak limit for n=3
We generalize and prove a hypothesis by V. Arnold on the parity of Frobenius
number. For the case of symmetric semigroups with three generators of Frobenius
numbers we found an exact formula, which in a sense is the sum of two
Sylvester's formulaes. We prove that the fraction of the symmetric semigroups
is vanishing in the weak limit
The dental phenotype of hairless dogs with FOXI3 haploinsufficiency
Hairless dog breeds show a form of ectodermal dysplasia characterised by a lack of hair and abnormal tooth morphology. This has been attributed to a semi-dominant 7-base-pair duplication in the first exon of the forkhead box I3 gene (FOXI3) shared by all three breeds. Here, we identified this FOXI3 variant in a historical museum sample of pedigreed hairless dog skulls by using ancient DNA extraction and present the associated dental phenotype. Unlike in the coated wild type dogs, the hairless dogs were characterised in both the mandibular and maxillary dentition by a loss of the permanent canines, premolars and to some extent incisors. In addition, the deciduous fourth premolars and permanent first and second molars consistently lacked the distal and lingual cusps; this resulted in only a single enlarged cusp in the basin-like heel (talonid in lower molars, talon in upper molars). This molar phenotype is also found among several living and fossil carnivorans and the extinct order Creodonta in which it is associated with hypercarnivory. We therefore suggest that FOXI3 may generally be involved in dental (cusp) development within and across mammalian lineages including the hominids which are known to exhibit marked variability in the presence of lingual cusps
Functional organization of the language network in three- and six-year-old children
The organization of the language network undergoes continuous changes during development as children learn to understand sentences. In the present study, functional magnetic resonance imaging and behavioral measures were utilized to investigate functional activation and functional connectivity (FC) in three-year-old (3yo) and six-year-old (6yo) children during sentence comprehension. Transitive German sentences varying the word order (subject-initial and object-initial) with case marking were presented auditorily. We selected children who were capable of processing the subject-initial sentences above chance level accuracy from each age group to ensure that we were tapping real comprehension. Both age groups showed a main effect of word order in the left posterior superior temporal gyrus (pSTG), with greater activation for object-initial compared to subject-initial sentences. However, age differences were observed in the FC between left pSTG and the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG). The 6yo group showed stronger FC between the left pSTG and Brodmann area (BA) 44 of the left IFG compared to the 3yo group. For the 3yo group, in turn, the FC between left pSTG and left BA 45 was stronger than with left BA 44. Our study demonstrates that while task-related activation was comparable, the small behavioral differences between age groups were reflected in the underlying functional organization revealing the ongoing development of the neural language network
Universal deformation rings of modules for algebras of dihedral type of polynomial growth
Let k be an algebraically closed field, and let \Lambda\ be an algebra of
dihedral type of polynomial growth as classified by Erdmann and Skowro\'{n}ski.
We describe all finitely generated \Lambda-modules V whose stable endomorphism
rings are isomorphic to k and determine their universal deformation rings
R(\Lambda,V). We prove that only three isomorphism types occur for
R(\Lambda,V): k, k[[t]]/(t^2) and k[[t]].Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure
Plasmon Evolution and Charge-Density Wave Suppression in Potassium Intercalated Tantalum Diselenide
We have investigated the influence of potassium intercalation on the
formation of the charge-density wave (CDW) instability in 2H-tantalum
diselenide by means of Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy and density functional
theory. Our observations are consistent with a filling of the conduction band
as indicated by a substantial decrease of the plasma frequency in experiment
and theory. In addition, elastic scattering clearly points to a destruction of
the CDW upon intercalation as can be seen by a vanishing of the corresponding
superstructures. This is accompanied by a new superstructure, which can be
attributed to the intercalated potassium. Based on the behavior of the c-axis
upon intercalation we argue in favor of interlayer-sites for the alkali-metal
and that the lattice remains in the 2H-modification
Empirical logic of finite automata: microstatements versus macrostatements
We compare the two approaches to the empirical logic of automata. The first,
called partition logic (logic of microstatements), refers to experiments on
individual automata. The second one, the logic of simulation (logic of
macrostatements), deals with ensembles of automata.Comment: late
Chains of large gaps between primes
Let denote the -th prime, and for any and sufficiently
large , define the quantity which measures the occurrence of
chains of consecutive large gaps of primes. Recently, with Green and
Konyagin, the authors showed that for sufficiently large . In this
note, we combine the arguments in that paper with the Maier matrix method to
show that for any fixed and sufficiently large . The
implied constant is effective and independent of .Comment: 16 pages, no figure
EUV ionization of pure He nanodroplets: Mass-correlated photoelectron imaging, Penning ionization and electron energy-loss spectra
The ionization dynamics of pure He nanodroplets irradiated by EUV radiation
is studied using Velocity-Map Imaging PhotoElectron-PhotoIon COincidence
(VMI-PEPICO) spectroscopy. We present photoelectron energy spectra and angular
distributions measured in coincidence with the most abundant ions He+, He2+,
and He3+. Surprisingly, below the autoionization threshold of He droplets we
find indications for multiple excitation and subsequent ionization of the
droplets by a Penning-like process. At high photon energies we evidence
inelastic collisions of photoelectrons with the surrounding He atoms in the
droplets
