    Crystalline Si nanoparticles below crystallization threshold: Effects of collisional heating in non-thermal atmospheric-pressure microplasmas

    Nucleation and growth of highly crystalline silicon nanoparticles in atmospheric-pressure low-temperature microplasmas at gas temperatures well below the Si crystallization threshold and within a short (100 μs) period of time are demonstrated and explained. The modeling reveals that collision-enhanced ion fluxes can effectively increase the heat flux on the nanoparticle surface and this heating is controlled by the ion density. It is shown that nanoparticles can be heated to temperatures above the crystallization threshold. These combined experimental and theoretical results confirm the effective heating and structure control of Si nanoparticles at atmospheric pressure and low gas temperatures

    Immunohistochemical Assessment of TNFAIP3/A20 Expression Correlates With Early Tumorigenesis in Breast Cancer

    BACKGROUND/AIM: Limited data exist on the expression pattern of TNFAIP3/A20, as assayed by immunohistochemistry (IHC), in breast cancer tissues. This study aimed to assess A20 expression pattern in breast cancer. Materials and Methods: The expression of A20 was analysed using IHC in 50 breast cancer cases retrieved from the Sharjah Breast Cancer Center at the University Hospital Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Omics survival data were also used to analyse its association with survival in endocrine-treated subgroups. Results: A20 expression in breast cancer tissues was 'tumor-specific', and as compared to normal tissue areas, its expression was associated with both intensity and extent in early grade 1 (p<0.0001) in all molecular subtypes. In addition, using omics survival data from a cohort of 3,520 breast cancer patients, we showed that A20 overexpression associated with lower overall survival rate in the endocrine treated subgroups [hazard ratio (HR)=2.14, 95%CI=1.61-2.82, p<0.0001]. Conclusion: A20 can serve as a biomarker for early diagnosis of breast cancers

    Effects of an Osteoporosis Prevention Program Based on Health Belief Model Among Females

    Background: Several studies reported the efficacy of osteoporosis prevention interventions in improvement of people’s preventive behaviors. However, there are reports that the interventions were not successful in altering osteoporosis health beliefs and preventive behaviors. Objectives: The current study aimed to assess the effect of a program based on health beliefs model (HBM) on females’ health beliefs and performances about osteoporosis preventive behaviors. Patients and Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 120 patients registered in two healthcare centers of Fasa, Fars Province, Iran in 2014. A questionnaire including demographic information and HBM constructs was employed to measure the females’ beliefs regarding nutrition and walking performance in prevention of osteoporosis bone mineral density (BMD) measured at the lumbar spine and femur before, immediately after the intervention, and six months after the intervention. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, independent samples t-, Mann-Whitney U tests and repeated measures ANOVA. Results: Immediately and six months after the intervention, a significant increase was found in the intervention group’s health beliefs, nutrition, and walking performances to prevent osteoporosis. Six months after the intervention, lumbar spine BMD T-score increased to 0.127 ± 0.061 in the intervention group but reduced to -0.043 ± 0.059 in the control group. Also, hip BMD T-score increased to 0.125 ± 0.088 in the intervention group, but decreased to -0.028 ± 0.052 in control group. Conclusions: The current study showed the effectiveness of HBM in adoption of nutrition and walking behaviors as well as the increase of bone density to prevent osteoporosis

    Polymorphisms of MTHFR and MTR genes are not related to susceptibility to childhood ALL in north India

    Background:Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most worldwide common type of childhood cancer. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine methyltransferase (MTR) participate in folate pathways and are known as critical factors for DNA integrity as well as DNA hypomethylation. The aim of this work is to investigate frequency of MTHFR (677C→T and 1298A→C) and MTR (2756A→G) polymorphisms and their interaction with respect to possible effect on risk of childhood ALL among North Indian population. Procedure: A case control study from has been conducted on bone marrow and peripheral blood samples from 125 ALL patients and 100 sex-age matched healthy controls using PCR-RFLP method. Results: No statistically significant differences were observed for different genotypes between patients and controls (p>0.05). Significant difference for the risk of ALL in individuals having genotype of MTHFR 677TT (OR=0.61, 95% CI=0.21–1.77) and MTHFR 1298CC (OR=0.56, 95% CI=0.18–1.68) was not observed. The correlation of SNP of MTR gene and risk of ALL was not observed, too. Conclusions: The differences in distribution of possible combined genotypes of MTHFR (677C→T, 1298A→C) and MTR (2756A→G) between ALL patients and controls were statistically insignificant

    Effect of Drilling Fluid Properties on Rate of Penetration

    Zadaća ovoga rada je odrediti učinak svojstava bušačih fluida na brzinu bušenja u ležištu koristeći dnevne izvještaje bušenja. Na osnovi naših studija na terenu, slijedeća svojstva bušačih fluida u nejednakom omjeru utječu na brzinu bušenja: težina isplake, plastična viskoznost i koncentracija krutih čestica. Rezultat ove studije pokazuje da je čisti učinak svojstava bušačeg fluida na brzinu bušenja manji no što se smatralo. Brzina bušenja smanjuje se povećanjem plastične viskoznosti, koncentracije krutih čestica i težine isplake. Smanjenje brzine bušenja više se pripisuje povećanju dubine, zato što se povećanjem dubine povećava čvrstoća stijene i smanjuje poroznost.The scope of this work is to determine the effect of drilling fluid properties on penetration rate in a field using daily drilling reports. Based on our field studies the following drilling fluid properties affect penetration rate to varying degrees: mud weight, plastic viscosity and solid content. The result of this study shows that the net effect of drilling fluid properties on penetration rate is less than what it thought to be. Penetration rate is decreased by increasing plastic viscosity, solid content and mud weight. Decreasing the penetration rate is more attributed to increase of depth, because by increasing the depth, rock strength increases and porosity decreases
