    Quasiperiodic oscillations with frequencies in the range 5-50 Hz have recently been discovered in X-rays from two bright galactic-bulge sources and Sco X-1. These sources are weakly magnetic neutron stars accreting from disks which the plasma is clumped. The interaction of the magnetosphere with clumps in the inner disk causes oscillations in the X-ray flux with many of the properties observed

    Distributional fixed point equations for island nucleation in one dimension: a retrospective approach for capture zone scaling

    The distributions of inter-island gaps and captures zones for islands nucleated on a one-dimensional substrate during submonolayer deposition are considered using a novel retrospective view. This provides an alternative perspective on why scaling occurs in this continuously evolving system. Distributional fixed point equations for the gaps are derived both with and without a mean field approximation for nearest neighbour gap size correlation. Solutions to the equations show that correct consideration of fragmentation bias justifies the mean field approach which can be extended to provide closed-from equations for the capture zones. Our results compare favourably to Monte Carlo data for both point and extended islands using a range of critical island size i=0,1,2,3i=0,1,2,3. We also find satisfactory agreement with theoretical models based on more traditional fragmentation theory approaches.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures and 1 tabl

    A multiwavelength survey of interacting galaxies

    Galaxy-galaxy collisions are known to produce drastic changes in morphology and, in many cases, enhance the level of star formation activity in galaxies. In order to better quantify the effects that interactions have on the star formation characteristics of galaxies the authors undertook a multiwavelength survey of a large sample of interacting disk-type galaxies. The sample is optically-selected, the inclusion of systems having been based upon the presence of unusual morphological features--such as tidal tails, plumes, rings, warped disks--suggestive of tidal interaction. The sample is composed of about 115 systems, most of which are spiral-spiral pairs, with a few spiral-elliptical pairs and a few merging systems (see Bushouse 1986 for more details of the sample selection). This sample has now been studied in the optical, infrared, and radio regimes, including optical spectra and H alpha images, near-infrared photometry and imaging, far-infrared photometry, H I 21 cm emission-line measurements, Very Large Array (VLA) 20 cm maps, and CO emission-line measurements. This paper presents an overview and comparison of the results of the optical, infrared and CO surveys. With these data the authors can compare the far-infrared and CO properties of the galaxies with the classic optical and radio indicators of star formation activity and thereby determine what, if any, relationships exist between star formation activity and the far-infrared and CO properties of the galaxies

    Implications of kHz QPOs for the spin frequencies and magnetic fields of neutron stars: new results from Circinus X-1

    Detection of paired kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) in the X-ray emission of a compact object is compelling evidence that the object is an accreting neutron star. In many neutron stars, the stellar spin rate is equal or roughly equal to Delta-nu, the frequency separation of the QPO pair, or to 2Delta-nu. Hence, if the mechanism that produces the kilohertz QPOs is similar in all stars, measurement of Delta-nu can provide an estimate of the star's spin rate. The involvement of the stellar spin in producing Delta-nu indicates that the magnetic fields of these stars are dynamically important. We focus here on the implications of the paired kHz QPOs recently discovered in the low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) system Cir X-1 (Boutloukos et al. 2006). The kHz QPOs discovered in Cir X-1 are generally similar to those seen in other stars, establishing that the compact object in the Cir X-1 system is a neutron star. However, the frequency nu-u of its upper kHz QPO is up to a factor of three smaller than is typical, and Delta-nu varies by about a factor 2 (167 Hz, the largest variation so far observed). Periodic oscillations have not yet been detected from Cir X-1, so its spin rate has not yet been measured directly. The low values of nu-u and the large variation of Delta-nu challenge current models of the generation of kHz QPOs. Improving our understanding of Cir X-1 will improve our knowledge of the spin rates and magnetic fields of all neutron stars.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, a table with all known accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars up to October 2007.     We review the significance determination for emission lines in the Chandra HETGS spectrum for GRB020813, and we report on a search for additional lines in high resolution Chandra spectra. No previously unclaimed features are found. We also discuss the significance of lines sets reportedly discovered using XMM data for GRB011211 and GRB030227.     Chandra Observations of the Optically Dark GRB030528

    The X-ray-rich GRB030528 was detected by the HETE satellite and its localization was rapidly disseminated. However, early optical observations failed to detect a counterpart source. In a 2-epoch ToO observation with Chandra, we discovered a fading X-ray source likely counterpart to GRB030528. The source brightness was typical of X-ray afterglows observed at similar epochs. Other observers detected an IR source at a location consistent with the X-ray source.     Functional Interactions of Alcohol-sensitive Sites in the \u3cem\u3eN\u3c/em\u3e-Methyl-d-aspartate Receptor M3 and M4 Domains

    The N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor is an important mediator of the behavioral effects of ethanol in the central nervous system. Previous studies have demonstrated sites in the third and fourth membrane-associated (M) domains of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor NR2A subunit that influence alcohol sensitivity and ion channel gating. We investigated whether two of these sites, Phe-637 in M3 and Met-823 in M4, interactively regulate the ethanol sensitivity of the receptor by testing dual substitution mutants at these positions. A majority of the mutations decreased steady-state glutamate EC50 values and maximal steady-state to peak current ratios (Iss/Ip), whereas only two mutations altered peak glutamate EC50 values. Steady-state glutamate EC50 values were correlated with maximal glutamate Iss/Ip values, suggesting that changes in glutamate potency were attributable to changes in desensitization. In addition, there was a significant interaction between the substituents at positions 637 and 823 with respect to glutamate potency and desensitization. IC50 values for ethanol among the mutants varied over the approximate range 100–325 mm. The sites in M3 and M4 significantly interacted in regulating ethanol sensitivity, although this was apparently dependent upon the presence of methionine in position 823. Molecular dynamics simulations of the NR2A subunit revealed possible binding sites for ethanol near both positions in the M domains. Consistent with this finding, the sum of the molecular volumes of the substituents at the two positions was not correlated with ethanol IC50 values. Thus, there is a functional interaction between Phe-637 and Met-823 with respect to glutamate potency, desensitization, and ethanol sensitivity, but the two positions do not appear to form a unitary site of alcohol action
