The attitude defined by SĆseki as fundamental to the writing of shaseibun is what Freud calls âhumourâ. On the other hand, humour qua âsense of the worldâ should be distinguished from the carnavalesque according to Bakhtin. For Freud, the joke, qua âcontribution to the comical by means of the unconsciousâ must be distinguished from humour, âthe contribution of the comical through the superegoâ. For me, humour may entertain some rapport to psychosis and SĆsekiâs shaseibun may be tied to a sort of suffering which cannot be easily cured with the help of jokes or of the tragic catharsis. It is not the suffering of neurosis, but that of psychosis. It is the suffering of the modern person. And yet it cannot wholly be told in the style of the modern novel. According to the norms of modern literature, SĆsekiâs long novels are failures. Yet there is no reason for us to see his novels as failures. They constituted, rather, SĆsekiâs struggle against the type of fiction through which modern literature sought to resolve and to find a synthesis for such failures
Buddhism, Marxism and Fascism in Japanese Intellectual Discourse in the 1930âs and 1940âs
Thinkers in modern Japan seem habitually to bring Buddhism to their encounters with the West. It is certainly a matter of fact that Japanese culture and thought cannot be understood without reference to Buddhism since its introduction and diffusion along with Chinese character writing in the seventh and eighth centuries. Nevertheless, even now in Japan Buddhism is considered âimported thought.â The philosopher Watsuji TetsurĆ (1889-1960) compared Buddhism in Japan to the assimilation of Chris..
