    WIRED: World Wide Web Interactive Remote Event Display

    WIRED is a framework, written in Java, to build High Energy Physics event displays that can be used across the network. To guarantee portability across all platforms, WIRED is implemented in the Java language and uses the Swing user interface component set. It can be used as a stand-alone application or as an applet inside a WWW browser. The graphical user interface allows for multiple views and for multiple controls acting on those views. A detector tree control is available to toggle the visibility of parts of the events and detector geometry. XML (Extensible Markup Language), RMI (Remote Method Invocation) and CORBA loaders can be used to load event data as well as geometry data, and to connect to FORTRAN, C, C++ and Java reconstruction programs. Non-linear and non-Cartesian projections (e.g. fish-eye, rho-phi, rho-Z, phi-Z) provide special views to get a better understanding of events. WIRED has grown to be a framework in use and under development in several HEP experiments (ATLAS, CHORUS, DELPHI, LHCb, BaBar, D0 and ZEUS). WIRED event displays have also proven to be useful to explain High Energy Physics to the general public.     Biocompatible anti-microbial coatings for urinary catheters

    Using a simple dip-coating mechanism, urinary catheters have been coated with 2-poly(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (pMTAC) using activator regenerated by electron transfer (ARGET) - atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A polydopamine-2-bromoisobutyryl bromide (pDA-BiBBr) initiator was initially grafted-to the catheter surface to initiate polymerization resulting in a pDA-g-pMTAC coating. The pDA-g-pMTAC-coated catheters showed a significant reduction in bacterial adhesion, with respect to un-coated silicone catheters, as determined by analyzing microbiological assays as well as scanning electron microscopy images. At the same time, no evidence for cytotoxicity was observed, rather, the coating promoted cell adhesion and proliferation of human cells. This makes the coating attractive for temporary as well as permanently implanted medical devices

    The Bilateral Relations of the Benelux Countries with Russia: Between Rhetorical Engagement and Competitive Business Interests

    This article explores the willingness of the Benelux countries to coordinate Russia related policies at EU level, contrasting their traditional pro-integrationist disposition and national economic interests. At rhetorical level all three states display a willingness to coordinate policies within the EU. In practice, however, this is dependent on the individual country’s economic interests, with energy being of particular importance in Dutch-Russian relations. There appears to be considerable inter-state competition in obtaining lucrative commercial contracts, undermining a coherent EU approach towards Russia. The traditional sources of influence of small states in the EU are limited in the case of the Benelux and Russia. With their traditional pro-integrationist attitudes having undergone substantial change, the Benelux states lack the leadership and the credibility to be seen as impartial brokers of a coalition for a coherent Russia strategy. Ad hoc coalitions on the basis of converging economic interests appear to be more determining for the coordination of Russia policies within the EU
