Parameter scaling in the decoherent quantum-classical transition for chaotic systems
The quantum to classical transition has been shown to depend on a number of
parameters. Key among these are a scale length for the action, , a
measure of the coupling between a system and its environment, , and, for
chaotic systems, the classical Lyapunov exponent, . We propose
computing a measure, reflecting the proximity of quantum and classical
evolutions, as a multivariate function of and searching for
transformations that collapse this hyper-surface into a function of a composite
parameter . We report results
for the quantum Cat Map, showing extremely accurate scaling behavior over a
wide range of parameters and suggest that, in general, the technique may be
effective in constructing universality classes in this transition.Comment: Submitte
Quantum Inequalities and Singular Energy Densities
There has been much recent work on quantum inequalities to constrain negative
energy. These are uncertainty principle-type restrictions on the magnitude and
duration of negative energy densities or fluxes. We consider several examples
of apparent failures of the quantum inequalities, which involve passage of an
observer through regions where the negative energy density becomes singular. We
argue that this type of situation requires one to formulate quantum
inequalities using sampling functions with compact support. We discuss such
inequalities, and argue that they remain valid even in the presence of singular

Previously Claimed(/Unclaimed) X-ray Emission Lines in High Resolution Afterglow Spectra
We review the significance determination for emission lines in the Chandra
HETGS spectrum for GRB020813, and we report on a search for additional lines in
high resolution Chandra spectra. No previously unclaimed features are found. We
also discuss the significance of lines sets reportedly discovered using XMM
data for GRB011211 and GRB030227. We find that these features are likely of

Chandra Observations of the Optically Dark GRB030528
The X-ray-rich GRB030528 was detected by the HETE satellite and its
localization was rapidly disseminated. However, early optical observations
failed to detect a counterpart source. In a 2-epoch ToO observation with
Chandra, we discovered a fading X-ray source likely counterpart to GRB030528.
The source brightness was typical of X-ray afterglows observed at similar
epochs. Other observers detected an IR source at a location consistent with the
X-ray source. The X-ray spectrum is not consistent with a large absorbing

Toward understanding ambulatory activity decline in Parkinson disease
BACKGROUND: Declining ambulatory activity represents an important facet of disablement in Parkinson disease (PD).
OBJECTIVE: The primary study aim was to compare the 2-year trajectory of ambulatory activity decline with concurrently evolving facets of disability in a small cohort of people with PD. The secondary aim was to identify baseline variables associated with ambulatory activity at 1- and 2-year follow-up assessments.
DESIGN: This was a prospective, longitudinal cohort study.
METHODS: Seventeen people with PD (Hoehn and Yahr stages 1-3) were recruited from 2 outpatient settings. Ambulatory activity data were collected at baseline and at 1- and 2-year annual assessments. Motor, mood, balance, gait, upper extremity function, quality of life, self-efficacy, and levodopa equivalent daily dose data and data on activities of daily living also were collected.
RESULTS: Participants displayed significant 1- and 2-year declines in the amount and intensity of ambulatory activity concurrently with increasing levodopa equivalent daily dose. Worsening motor symptoms and slowing of gait were apparent only after 2 years. Concurrent changes in the remaining clinical variables were not observed. Baseline ambulatory activity and physical performance variables had the strongest relationships with 1- and 2-year mean daily steps.
LIMITATIONS: The sample was small and homogeneous.
CONCLUSIONS: Future research that combines ambulatory activity monitoring with a broader and more balanced array of measures would further illuminate the dynamic interactions among evolving facets of disablement and help determine the extent to which sustained patterns of recommended daily physical activity might slow the rate of disablement in PD.This study was funded primarily by the Davis Phinney Foundation and the Parkinson Disease Foundation. Can a wormhole supported by only small amounts of exotic matter really be traversable?
Recent studies have shown that (a) quantum effects may be sufficient to
support a wormhole throat and (b) the total amount of "exotic matter" can be
made arbitrarily small. Unfortunately, using only small amounts of exotic
matter may result in a wormhole that flares out too slowly to be traversable in
a reasonable length of time. Combined with the Ford-Roman constraints, the
wormhole may also come close to having an event horizon at the throat. This
paper examines a model that overcomes these difficulties, while satisfying the
usual traversability conditions. This model also confirms that the total amount
of exotic matter can indeed be made arbitrarily small.Comment: 8 pages, AMSTe
Optical and X-ray Observations of the Afterglow to XRF030723
The X-ray-flash XRF030723 was detected by the HETE satellite and rapidly
disseminated, allowing for an optical transient to be detected ~1 day after the
burst. We discuss observations in the optical with Magellan, which confirmed
the fade of the optical transient. In a 2-epoch ToO observation with Chandra,
we discovered a fading X-ray source spatially coincident with the optical
transient. We present spectral fits to the X-ray data. We also discuss the
possibility that the source underwent a rebrightening in the X-rays, as was
observed in the optical. We find that the significance of a possible

Brans-Dicke wormholes in the Jordan and Einstein frames
We examine the possibility of static wormhole solutions in the vacuum
Brans-Dicke theory both in the original (Jordan) frame and in the conformally
rescaled (Einstein) frame. It turns out that, in the former frame, wormholes
exist only in a very narrow interval of the coupling parameter, viz.,
-3/2<omega<-4/3. It is shown that these wormholes are not traversable in
practice. In the latter frame, wormhole solutions do not exist at all unless

Immunopathogenesis of canine chronic ulcerative stomatitis.
Canine Chronic Ulcerative Stomatitis is a spontaneously occurring inflammatory disease of the oral mucosa. An immune-mediated pathogenesis is suspected though not yet proven. We have recently reported on the clinical and histologic features, and identification of select leukocyte cell populations within the lesion. A clinical and histologic similarity to oral lichen planus of people was proposed. In the present study, these initial observations are extended by examining lesions from 24 dogs with clinical evidence of chronic ulcerative stomatitis. Because dogs with chronic ulcerative stomatitis often have concurrent periodontal disease, we wondered if dental plaque/biofilm may be a common instigator of inflammation in both lesions. We hypothesized that dogs with chronic ulcerative stomatitis would exhibit a spectrum of pathologic changes and phenotype of infiltrating leukocytes that would inform lesion pathogenesis and that these changes would differ from inflammatory phenotypes in periodontitis. Previously we identified chronic ulcerative stomatitis lesions to be rich in FoxP3+ and IL17+ cells. As such, we suspect that these leukocytes play an important role in lesion pathogenesis. The current study confirms the presence of moderate to large numbers of FoxP3+ T cells and IL17+ cells in all ulcerative stomatitis lesions using confocal immunofluorescence. Interestingly, the majority of IL17+ cells were determined to be non-T cells and IL17+ cell frequencies were negatively correlated with severity on the clinical scoring system. Three histologic subtypes of ulcerative stomatitis were determined; lichenoid, deep stomatitis and granulomatous. Periodontitis lesions, like stomatitis lesions, were B cell and plasma cell rich, but otherwise differed from the stomatitis lesions. Direct immunofluorescence results did not support an autoantibody-mediated autoimmune disease process. Gravitational Waves in Bianchi Type-I Universes I: The Classical Theory
The propagation of classical gravitational waves in Bianchi Type-I universes
is studied. We find that gravitational waves in Bianchi Type-I universes are
not equivalent to two minimally coupled massless scalar fields as it is for the
Robertson-Walker universe. Due to its tensorial nature, the gravitational wave
is much more sensitive to the anisotropy of the spacetime than the scalar field
is and it gains an effective mass term. Moreover, we find a coupling between
the two polarization states of the gravitational wave which is also not present
