    Magneto Binary Nanofluid Convection in Porous Medium

    The effect of an externally impressed magnetic field on the stability of a binary nanofluid layer in porous medium is considered in this work. The conservation equations related to the system are solved using normal mode technique and Galerkin method to analyze the problem. The complex expressions are approximated to get useful results. Mode of heat transfer is stationary for top heavy distribution of nanoparticles in the fluid layer and top heavy nanofluids are very less stable than regular fluids. Oscillatory motions are possible for bottom heavy distribution of nanoparticles and they are not much influenced by properties of different nanoparticles. A comparative analysis of the instability of water based nanofluids with metallic (Cu, Ag) and semiconducting (TiO2, SiO2) nanoparticles under the influence of magnetic field is examined. Semiconducting nanofluids are found to be more stable than metallic nanofluids. Porosity destabilizes the layer while solute difference (at the boundaries of the layer) stabilizes it. Magnetic field stabilizes the fluid layer system significantly

    Background: Cervical cancer is both preventable and curable. It has a long natural history with a prolonged pre-cancerous phase that is easily detectable and treatable. Exfoliative cervical cytology remains the mainstay for screening of pre-cancerous lesions (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, CIN). In this study we discuss role of cytology, colposcopy and biopsy in the detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.Methods:  This is a prospective observational study done at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dhiraj General Hospital from April 2013 for a period of 4 months. Total of 200 eligible women were enrolled for the study.Results:Colposcopy was well-correlated with histology in 69.70% cases.Cytology was well-correlated with histology in 65.15% of cases & with majordiscrepancy in 18.18% cases. Conclusion:The incidence of cervical cancer will continue to be very high in our population because of the constant high incidence of early marriage, multiparity, poor nutrition, poor hygiene, and low living standards. Thus there is a need for screening of these patients for cervical cancer and till date exfoliative Cytology has been found to be the Gold Standard for detection of early malignancy. Universal cytologic screening of all sexually active women should be done, especially in cases of parous women in lower socio-economic groups. Treatment & follow-up of dysplasia could prevent malignancies in future

    The association of mthfr (rs1801133) with hypertension in an indigenous South African population

    The current study sought to investigate the association between the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) variant (rs1801133) and the risk of developing hypertension (HTN) in an indigenous South African population.A total of 442 participants (hypertensive, n = 279 and nonhypertensive, n = 163) from the indigenous tribe residing in Mthatha, Eastern Cape (South Africa) were recruited. HTN was defined as a systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of ≥130/80 mmHg following American Heart Association guidelines. The genotyping of MTHFR (rs1801133) was assessed using MassARRAY® System. Thereafter, the association between rs1801133 in various genetic models and HTN was determined by logistic regression model analysis. Furthermore, the interaction between rs1801133 and selected risk factors on HTN was performed using the open-source multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR)

    Synergistic effect on static and dynamic mechanical properties of carbon fiber-multiwalled carbon nanotube hybrid polycarbonate composites

    Carbon fiber (CF) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-reinforced hybrid micro-nanocomposites are prepared through melt mixing followed by injection moulding. The synergistic effect on both the static and dynamic mechanical properties with MWCNT/aMWCNT and CF reinforcement in a polycarbonate matrix is investigated by utilizing dynamic mechanical analysis, and flexural and tensile measurements. The enhancement in the flexural modulus and strength of the composite specimens as compared to pure PC for maximum loading of CF is 128.40% and 39.90%, respectively, which further improved to 142.94% and 42.60%, respectively, for CF-functionalized MWCNTs. Similarly, the storage modulus of the composite specimens reinforced with a maximum loading of CF and CF-functionalized MWCNTs show an increment of 176.57% and 203.33%, respectively over pure PC at 40 degrees C. Various types of parameter such as the coefficient C factor, degree of entanglement and adhesion factor have been calculated to analyze the interaction between fillers and the polymer matrix. Composite specimens containing 2 wt% of functionalized MWCNTs show a lower C value than the as-synthesized MWCNTs, which is indicative of a higher effectiveness of functionalized MWCNT-containing composite specimens. These results are well supported by optical microscopy and Raman spectroscopy by confirming the distribution of reinforcement

    An insight into the mechanism of holamine- and funtumine-induced cell death in cancer cells

    Holamine and funtumine, steroidal alkaloids with strong and diverse pharmacological activities are commonly found in the Apocynaceae family of Holarrhena. The selective anti-proliferative and cell cycle arrest effects of holamine and funtumine on cancer cells have been previously reported. The present study evaluated the anti-proliferative mechanism of action of these two steroidal alkaloids on cancer cell lines (HT-29, MCF-7 and HeLa) by exploring the mitochondrial depolarization effects, reactive oxygen species (ROS) induction, apoptosis, F-actin perturbation, and inhibition of topoisomerase-I. The apoptosis-inducing effects of the compounds were studied by flow cytometry using the APOPercentageTM dye and Caspase-3/7 Glo assay kit. The two compounds showed a significantly greater cytotoxicity in cancer cells compared to non-cancer (normal) fibroblasts. The observed antiproliferative effects of the two alkaloids presumably are facilitated through the stimulation of apoptosis. The apoptotic effect was elicited through the modulation of mitochondrial function, elevated ROS production, and caspase-3/7 activation. Both compounds also induced F-actin disorganization and inhibited topoisomerase-I activity. Although holamine and funtumine appear to have translational potential for the development of novel anticancer agents, further mechanistic and molecular studies are recommended to fully understand their anticancer effects

    Synthesis of biogenic gold nanoparticles from terminalia mantaly extracts and the evaluation of their in vitro cytotoxic effects in cancer cells

    Scientists have demonstrated the potential of plant materials as 'green' reducing and stabilizing agents for the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and opened new ecofriendly horizons to develop effective and less harmful treatment strategies. The current study demonstrated the use of Terminalia mantaly (TM) extracts to synthesize AuNPs with enhanced cytotoxic effects. The TM-AuNPs were synthesized at 25 and 70 °C using water (WTM) and methanolic (MTM) extracts of the leaf, root and stem/bark parts of the plant. The TM-AuNPs were characterized using UV-visible spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), selection area electron diffraction (SAED) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Majority of the TM-AuNPs were spherical with a mean diameter between 22.5 and 43 nm and were also crystalline in nature. The cytotoxic effects of TM-AuNPs were investigated in cancer (Caco-2, MCF-7 and HepG2) and non-cancer (KMST-6) cell lines using the MTT assay. While the plant extracts showed some cytotoxicity towards the cancer cells, some of the TM-AuNPs were even more toxic to the cells. The IC50 values (concentrations of the AuNPs that inhibited 50% cell growth) as low as 0.18 µg/mL were found for TM-AuNPs synthesized using the root extract of the plant. Moreover, some of the TM-AuNPs demonstrated selective toxicity towards specific cancer cell types. The study demonstrates the potential of TM extracts to produce AuNPs and describe the optimal conditions for AuNPs using TM extracts. The toxicity of some the TM-AuNPs can possibly be explored in the future as an antitumor treatment

    Cardiovascular complications are frequently present in coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) infection. These include microvascular and macrovascular thrombotic complications such as arterial and venous thromboembolism, myocardial injury or inflammation resulting in infarction, heart failure, and arrhythmias. Data suggest increased risk of adverse outcomes in pregnant compared with nonpregnant women of reproductive age with COVID-19 infection, including need for intensive care unit admission, mechanical ventilation, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation utilization. Current statements addressing COVID-19-associated cardiac complications do not include pregnancy complications that may mimic COVID-19 complications such as peripartum cardiomyopathy, spontaneous coronary artery dissection, and preeclampsia. Unique to pregnancy, COVID-19 complications can result in preterm delivery and modify management of the pregnancy. Moreover, pregnancy has often been an exclusion criterion for enrollment in research studies.     The processing of tomato fruit into puree, juices, ketchup, sauces, and dried powders generates a significant amount of waste in the form of tomato pomace, which includes seeds and skin. Tomato processing by-products, particularly seeds, are reservoirs of health-promoting macromolecules, such as proteins (bioactive peptides), carotenoids (lycopene), polysaccharides (pectin), phytochemicals (flavonoids), and vitamins (α-tocopherol). Health-promoting properties make these bioactive components suitable candidates for the development of novel food and nutraceutical products. This review comprehensively demonstrates the bioactive compounds of tomato seeds along with diverse biomedical activities of tomato seed extract (TSE) for treating cardiovascular ailments, neurological disorders, and act as antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial agent. Utilization of bioactive components can improve the economic feasibility of the tomato processing industry and may help to reduce the environmental pollution generated by tomato by-products
