Robotics in the context of visual art

Tämä laadullinen opinnäytetyö tutkii robotiikkaa kuvataiteen kontekstissa taiteellisen tutkimuksen muodossa. Opinnäytteeni teoreettinen viitekehys nojaa aiemmin aiheesta tehtyyn tutkimukseen, jossa inspiraationa toimivat post- ja transhumanistiset filosofiat. Aineistonkeruumenetelmänä toimii prosessin aikana muodostuneet muistiinpanot, ja tässä tapauksessa myös taiteellinen visuaalinen tuotos, sekä kokemuksellisuus. Aineisto koostuu prosessin aikana syntyneistä huomioista sekä mm. aiemmin aihetta käsitelleistä ja aiheeseen liittyvistä taiteellisista- sekä kirjoitetuista tutkimuksista ja artikkeleista. Tutkimuskysymys sekä työn tutkimuksellinen näkökulma liittyy vahvasti taitelijana toimimiseen, sekä visuaaliseen ilmaisuun. Tarkoituksenani on tutkia, mitä lisäarvoa robotiikka voisi tuoda taiteelliseen työskentelyyn. Halusin yhdistää perinteisen taiteellisen tekotavan keinoja sekä teknologiaa, ja pohtia uusia näkökulmia, joita taiteellinen työskentely mahdollisesti tuottaa visuaalisessa sekä taiteellisessa prosessissa. Halusin tämän työskentelyn myötä syventyä tekoälyteknologiaan liittyviin tutkimuksiin, samalla analysoiden kokemuksellisuuden kautta havaintojani. Edellä mainittujen seikkojen myötä, tutkimusstrategiaksi valikoitu autoetnografinen tutkimusmenetelmä, jossa tutkijan kokemuksellisuus, sekä mahdollisuus liikkua eri näkökulmien ja roolien välillä, edesauttaa tämän monipolvisen ja varsin laajan tutkimuksen toteuttamisen optimaalisesti. Työn pedagoginen näkökulma linkittyy kuvataidekasvatukseen tilanteessa, jossa tekoälyteknologian kehitys on valtaisaa, myös kuvataiteen kentällä. Perinteisten menetelmien rinnalle on muotoutunut jokaiselle halukkaalle tarjoutuva AI-taiteen pelikenttä, kaikkine uhkineen ja mahdollisuuksineen. Muun muassa tästä juontuen taiteen aineettomuus sekä materiaalisuus, tulevaisuusskenaarioihin liittyvät näkökulmat, sekä tekijänoikeudelliset kysymykset ovat ajankohtaisuudessaan huomionarvoisia. Prosessin aikana muodostuneet pohdinnat jättivät ilmaan myös avoimia kysymyksiä, joihin ei välttämättä kehkeytynyt yksiselitteisiä vastauksia, kuten esimerkiksi millaisia ominaisuuksia robotilla tulisi olla, jotta sen voisi määritellä kanssataiteilijaksi.This qualitative thesis explores robotics in the context of visual art, in the form of artistic research. The theoretical framework is based on ongoing research, inspired by post- and transhumanist philosophies. The data collection method is the notes created during the process, including also an artistic visual output, as well as experientiality. The material consists of the observations made during the process and e.g., of topics which have been covered earlier and consists written artistic studies and articles. The research question and the work's research perspective are strongly related to working as an artist and to visual expression. My purpose is to investigate what added value robotics could bring to artistic work. I wanted to combine the methods of the traditional artistic way of doing things and technology, and to consider new perspectives that artistic work produces in the visual and artistic process. Through this work, I wanted to delve deeper into research of artificial intelligence technology, at the same time examining my observations through artistic experience. With the mentioned points, the autoethnographic research method became adopted as the research strategy; an experiential opportunity to study different perspectives between roles contributes optimally to the implementation of this multi-generational and quite extensive research. The pedagogical perspective of the work is linked to visual arts education, where the development of artificial intelligence technology is enormous, also in the field of visual arts. Alongside the traditional methods, a playground of AI art, with all its threats and opportunities, has been formed for everyone who wishes to explore into it. Related to this, the immateriality and materiality of art, perspectives related to future scenarios, and copyright questions are worthy of attention in their topicality. The reflections formed in the process also left, in the air, that the continuous development work is unambiguous, as to what the robot must constantly be like in order to be defined as a co-artist

Maalaan : siis olen

Tämä kirjallinen opinnäytetyö sisältää pohdintoja taiteilijana olemisesta. Haen vastausta kysymykseen, millainen on taiteellinen identiteettini muun muassa taiteilijan toimenkuvan ja nykytaiteen tilan kautta. Kirjoittamisen yhtenä lähtökohtana on myös sanoittaa tekemistäni, opinnäytetyöni taiteellista osiota, sekä hahmottaa itselleni oman tekemiseni filosofiaa. Olen niin sanotusti perimmäisten kysymysten äärellä. Huomasin kirjoitusprosessin edetessä, että en voi hakea vastausta kysymykseen millainen tai mikä. Pikemminkin taiteilijuuteen ja identiteetin vahvistamiseen kuuluu kysymykset, miten ja mitä kohti, ainakin minulla tällä hetkellä. Koen, että suoraa vastausta siihen, mikä taiteellinen identiteettini on, ei ole. Käytän lähteinä kirjallisuutta, artikkeleita sekä haastatteluja.This written thesis contains reflections on how to be an artist today. I am getting the answear to the question of what my artistic identity is. One starting point for my writing is to say how, why or what I do as an artist. I also discuss about the process of artistic thesis and make things clear for myself. I am by fundamental guestions of my art and artistic work. During the writing process I realized, that It is more important to think about the questions how or towards what I am going with my art and as an artist.
