    Potencial energético de la biomasa procedente de árboles frutales podados en Croacia

     The world's most developed countries and the European Union (EU) deem that the renewable energy sources should partly substitute fossil fuels and become a “bridge” to the utilization of other energy sources of the future. This paper will present the possibility of using pruned biomass from fruit cultivars. It will also present the calculation of potential energy from the mentioned raw materials in order to determine the extent of replacement of non-renewable sources with these types of renewable energy. One of the results of the intensive fruit-growing process, in post pruning stage, is large amount of pruned biomass waste. Based on the calculated biomass (kg ha-1) from intensively grown woody fruit crops that are most grown in Croatia (apple, pear, apricots, peach and nectarine, sweet cherry, sour cherry, prune, walnut, hazelnut, almond, fig, grapevine, and olive) and the analysis of combustible (carbon 45.55-49.28%, hydrogen 5.91-6.83%, and sulphur 0.18-0.21%) and non-combustible matters (oxygen 43.34-46.6%, nitrogen 0.54-1.05%, moisture 3.65-8.83%, ashes 1.52-5.39%) with impact of lowering the biomass heating value (15.602-17.727 MJ kg-1), the energy potential of the pruned fruit biomass is calculated at 4.21 PJ.Los principales países desarrollados del mundo y de la Unión Europea (UE) consideran que las fuentes de energía renovables deberían sustituir parcialmente a los combustibles fósiles y convertirse en el futuro en un “puente” hacia la utilización de otras fuentes de energía. En este trabajo, se planteó la posibilidad de utilizar biomasa cortada procedente de cultivos frutales con el propósito de calcular el potencial energético del mencionado material en bruto, así como determinar el grado de remplazo de fuentes no renovables con este tipo de fuentes de energía renovable. Uno de los resultados del proceso de cultivo de frutales en intensivo, tras la época de poda, es la gran cantidad de biomasa cortada inútil. En base al cálculo de biomasa (kg ha-1) de los frutales leñosos de cultivo intensivo más comunes en el territorio de Croacia (manzano, peral, albaricoquero, melocotonero y nectarino, cerezo, guindo, ciruelo, nogal, avellano, almendro, higuera, viña y olivo) y en base al análisis de partículas combustibles (carbono 45,55-49,28%, hidrógeno 5,91-6,83% y azufre 0,18-0,21%) y de partículas no combustibles (oxígeno 43,34-46,6%, nitrógeno 0,54-1,05%, vapor de agua 3,65-8,83% y cenizas 1,52-5,39%) que influyen en el poder calorífico  inferior de la biomasa (15,602-17,727 MJ kg-1), se calcula que la energía potencial de los restos de poda de frutales es 4.21 PJ

    Novi aktivni leap-frog filtar trećeg reda

    This paper presents the realization of third-order low-pass active-RC filters using a new Leap-Frog (LF) topology. New structure is a simplified LF structure with the elements calculated directly from the transfer function coefficients. Several versions of the circuits are presented and compared. The comparison to other common thirdorder filter sections is done, as well. The new LF filter has the reduced number of components, reduced complexity and straightforward design procedure compared to classical filters. As an illustration of the efficiency of the proposed new LF filter, the sensitivity analysis using Schoeffler sensitivity measure as well as output thermal noise analysis was performed on examples with Butterworth and Chebyshev 0.5dB pass-band ripple transfer functions. Using PSpice with a TL081 opamp model, the filter performance is simulated and the results compared and verified by measurements on a discrete-component breadboard filter. All equations needed for the step-by-step design are given.U radu je predstavljena realizacija nisko-propusnog aktivnog-RC filtra trećeg reda koji upotrebljava novu "leap-frog" (LF) topologiju. Nova struktura je pojednostavljena LF struktura s elementima koji se računaju direktno iz koeficijenata prijenosne funkcije. Nekoliko inačica krugova je prikazano i obavljena je usporedba. Napravljena je usporedba tako.er i s drugim uobičajenim filtarskim sekcijama trećeg reda. Novi LF filtar ima smanjeni broj komponenata, smanjenu kompleksnost i jednostavniji postupak projektiranja u usporedbi s klasičnim filtrima. Za ilustraciju učinkovitosti predstavljenog novog LF filtra, provedena je analiza osjetljivosti pomoću Schoefflerove mjere osjetljivosti i analiza termičkog šuma na izlazu na primjerima s prijenosnim funkcijama po Butterworthu i Chebyshevu s valovitošću u području propuštanja od 0.5 dB. Pomoću PSpice-a s modelom pojačala TL081, filtarska svojstva su simulirana, uspore.ena i potvr.ena mjerenjima na filtrima realiziranim pomoću diskretnih elemenata na štampanoj pločici.     Long-Term Mortality after New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation in COVID-19

    Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) has been described as a common cardiovascular manifestation in patients suffering from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and has been suggested to be a potential risk factor for a poor clinical outcome. Methods: In this observational study, all patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 in 2020 in the Cantonal Hospital of Baden were included. We assessed clinical characteristics, in-hospital outcomes as well as long-term outcomes with a mean follow-up time of 278 (±90) days. Results: Amongst 646 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 (59% male, median age: 70 (IQR: 59-80)) in 2020, a total of 177 (27.4%) patients were transferred to the intermediate/intensive care unit (IMC/ICU), and 76 (11.8%) were invasively ventilated during their hospitalization. Ninety patients (13.9%) died. A total of 116 patients (18%) showed AF on admission of which 34 (29%) had new-onset AF. Patients with COVID-19 and newly diagnosed AF were more likely to require invasive ventilation (OR: 3.5; p = 0.01) but did not encounter an increased in-hospital mortality. Moreover, AF neither increased long-term mortality nor the number of rehospitalizations during follow-up after adjusting for confounders. Conclusions: In patients suffering from COVID-19, the new-onset of AF on admission was associated with an increased risk of invasive ventilation and transfer to the IMC/ICU but did not affect in-hospital or long-term mortality

    Prospective analysis of the influence of sport and educational factors on the prevalence and initiation of smoking in older adolescents from Croatia

    The prevalence of smoking among Croatian adolescents is alarmingly high, but no previous study has prospectively examined the sport- and academic-factors associated with smoking and smoking initiation. This study aimed to prospectively examine the associations between scholastic (educational) achievement and sport factors and smoking in 16- to 18-year-old adolescents. This twoyear prospective cohort study included 644 adolescents who were 16 years of age at baseline (46% females). Baseline testing was implemented at the beginning of the 3rd year of high school (September 2014) when participants were 16 years old. Follow-up testing was completed at the end of the fourth year of high school, which occurred 20 months later. The evaluated predictor variables were educational-achievement- and sport-related-factors. The outcome variables were (i) smoking at baseline; (ii) smoking at follow-up; and (iii) smoking initiation over the course of the study. We assessed the associations between predictors and outcomes using logistic regression models adjusted for age, gender, socioeconomic status, and conflict with parents. The educational variables were consistently associated with smoking, with lower grade-point-average (Baseline: odd ratio (OR): 2.01, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.61\u20132.55; Follow-up: 1.59, 1.31\u20131.94), more frequent absence from school (Baseline: OR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.19\u20131.69; Follow-up: 1.30, 1.08\u20131.58), and lower behavioral grades (Baseline: OR: 1.80, 95% CI: 1.10\u20132.89; Follow-up: 1.57, 1.03\u20132.41) in children who smoke. Adolescents who reported quitting sports were at greater odds of being smokers (Baseline: 2.07, 1.31\u20133.32; Followup: 1.66, 1.09\u20132.56). Sport competitive achievement at baseline was protective against smoking initiation during following two-year period (0.45, 0.21\u20130.91). While the influence of the educational variables on smoking initiation has been found to be established earlier; sport achievement was identified as a significant protective factor against initiating smoking in older adolescents. Results should be used in development of an anti-smoking preventive campaign in older adolescents

    Multiple detection and spread of novel strains of the SARS-CoV-2 B.1.177 (B.1.177.75) lineage that test negative by a commercially available nucleocapsid gene real-time RT-PCR

    Several lineages of SARS-CoV-2 are currently circulating worldwide. During SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic activities performed in Abruzzo region (central Italy) several strains belonging to the B.1.177.75 lineage tested negative for the N gene but positive for the ORF1ab and S genes (+/+/- pattern) by the TaqPath COVID-19 CE-IVD RT-PCR Kit manufactured by Thermofisher. By sequencing, a unique mutation, synonymous 28948C > T, was found in the N-negative B.1.177.75 strains. Although we do not have any knowledge upon the nucleotide sequences of the primers and probe adopted by this kit, it is likely that N gene dropout only occurs when 28948C > T is coupled with 28932C > T, this latter present, in turn, in all B.1.177.75 sequences available on public databases. Furthermore, epidemiological analysis was also performed. The majority of the N-negative B.1.177.75 cases belonged to two clusters apparently unrelated to each other and both clusters involved young people. However, the phylogeny for sequences containing the +/+/- pattern strongly supports a genetic connection and one common source for both clusters. Though, genetic comparison suggests a connection rather than indicating the independent emergence of the same mutation in two apparently unrelated clusters. This study highlights once more the importance of sharing genomic data to link apparently unrelated epidemiological clusters and to, remarkably, update molecular tests

    The envelope protein of Usutu virus attenuates West Nile virus virulence in immunocompetent mice

    West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) are the two most widespread mosquito-borne flaviviruses in Europe causing severe neuroinvasive disease in humans. Here, following standardization of the murine model with wild type (wt) viruses, we engineered WNV and USUV genome by reverse genetics. A recombinant virus carrying the 5′ UTR of WNV within the USUV genome backbone (r-USUV5′-UTR WNV) was rescued; when administered to mice this virus did not cause signs or disease as wt USUV suggesting that 5′ UTR of a marked neurotropic parental WNV was not per se a virulence factor. Interestingly, a chimeric virus carrying the envelope (E) protein of USUV in the WNV genome backbone (r-WNVE-USUV) showed an attenuated profile in mice compared to wt WNV but significantly more virulent than wt USUV. Moreover, except when tested against serum samples originating from a live WNV infection, r-WNVE-USUV showed an identical antigenic profile to wt USUV confirming that E is also the major immunodominant protein of USUV

    Long-Term Prognosis of Patients With Takotsubo Syndrome

    BACKGROUND Prognosis of Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) remains controversial due to scarcity of available data. Additionally, the effect of the triggering factors remains elusive. OBJECTIVES This study compared prognosis between TTS and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients and investigated short- and long-term outcomes in TTS based on different triggers. METHODS Patients with TTS were enrolled from the International Takotsubo Registry. Long-term mortality of patients with TTS was compared to an age- and sex-matched cohort of patients with ACS. In addition, short- and long-term outcomes were compared between different groups according to triggering conditions. RESULTS Overall, TTS patients had a comparable long-term mortality risk with ACS patients. Of 1,613 TTS patients, an emotional trigger was detected in 485 patients (30%). Of 630 patients (39%) related to physical triggers, 98 patients (6%) had acute neurologic disorders, while in the other 532 patients (33%), physical activities, medical conditions, or procedures were the triggering conditions. The remaining 498 patients (31%) had no identifiable trigger. TTS patients related to physical stress showed higher mortality rates than ACS patients during long-term follow-up, whereas patients related to emotional stress had better outcomes compared with ACS patients. CONCLUSIONS Overall, TTS patients had long-term outcomes comparable to age- and sex-matched ACS patients. Also, we demonstrated that TTS can either be benign or a life-threating condition depending on the inciting stress factor. We propose a new classification based on triggers, which can serve as a clinical tool to predict short- and long-term outcomes of TTS.     Duration of adenosine-induced myocardial hyperemia - Insights from quantitative 13N-ammonia positron emission tomography myocardial perfusion imaging

    AIMS To assess the impact of adenosine on quantitative myocardial blood flow (MBF) in a rapid stress-rest protocol compared to a rest-stress protocol using 13N-ammonia positron emission tomography (PET) myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) and to gain insights into the time dependency of such effects. METHODS AND RESULTS Quantitative MBF at rest (rMBF), during adenosine-induced stress (sMBF) and myocardial flow reserve (MFR) were obtained from 331 retrospectively identified patients who underwent 13N-ammonia PET-MPI for suspected chronic coronary syndrome and who all exhibited no perfusion defects. Of these, 146 (44.1%) underwent a rapid stress-rest protocol with a time interval (Δtstress-rest) of 20 ± 4 minutes between adenosine infusion offset and rest-imaging, as per clinical routine. The remaining 185 (55.9%) patients underwent a rest-stress protocol and served as the reference. Groups did not differ regarding demographics, risk factors, medication, left ventricular function, and calcium scores. rMBF was significantly higher in the stress-rest vs. the rest-stress group (0.80 [IQR 0.66-1.00] vs. 0.70 [0.58-0.83] ml·min-1·g-1, p < 0.001) and, as sMBF was identical between groups (2.52 [2.20-2.96] vs. 2.50 [1.96-3.11], p = 0.347), MFR was significantly lower in the stress-rest group (3.07 [2.43-3.88] vs. 3.50 [2.63-4.10], p < 0.001). There was a weak correlation between Δtstress-rest and rMBF (r = -0.259, p = 0.002) and between Δtstress-rest and MFR (r = 0.163, p = 0.049), and the proportion of patients with abnormally high rMBF was significantly decreasing with increasing Δtstress-rest. CONCLUSIONS Intravenously applied adenosine induces a long-lasting hyperemic effect on the myocardium. Consequently, rapid stress-rest protocols could lead to an overestimation of rMBF and an underestimation of MFR

    DLL4 promotes continuous adult intestinal lacteal regeneration and dietary fat transport.

    The small intestine is a dynamic and complex organ that is characterized by constant epithelium turnover and crosstalk among various cell types and the microbiota. Lymphatic capillaries of the small intestine, called lacteals, play key roles in dietary fat absorption and the gut immune response; however, little is known about the molecular regulation of lacteal function. Here, we performed a high-resolution analysis of the small intestinal stroma and determined that lacteals reside in a permanent regenerative, proliferative state that is distinct from embryonic lymphangiogenesis or quiescent lymphatic vessels observed in other tissues. We further demonstrated that this continuous regeneration process is mediated by Notch signaling and that the expression of the Notch ligand delta-like 4 (DLL4) in lacteals requires activation of VEGFR3 and VEGFR2. Moreover, genetic inactivation of Dll4 in lymphatic endothelial cells led to lacteal regression and impaired dietary fat uptake. We propose that such a slow lymphatic regeneration mode is necessary to match a unique need of intestinal lymphatic vessels for both continuous maintenance, due to the constant exposure to dietary fat and mechanical strain, and efficient uptake of fat and immune cells. Our work reveals how lymphatic vessel responses are shaped by tissue specialization and uncover a role for continuous DLL4 signaling in the function of adult lymphatic vasculature
