    Attitudes and Behavioral Response Toward Key Tobacco Control Measures from the FCTC among Chinese Urban Residents

    BACKGROUND. The Chinese National People's Congress ratified the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) on 27 August 2005, signaling China's commitment to implement tobacco control policies and legislation consistent with the treaty. This study was designed to examine attitudes towards four WHO FCTC measures among Chinese urban residents. METHODS. In a cross-sectional design study, survey data were collected from two Chinese urban cities involving a sample of 3,003 residents aged 15 years or older. Through a face-to-face interview, respondents were asked about attitudes toward four tobacco control measures developed by the WHO FCTC. Data on the four dependent measures were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression analyses. Using descriptive statistics, potential change in smoking behavior that smokers might make in response to increasing cigarette prices is also reported. RESULTS. 81.8% of the respondents in the study sample supported banning smoking in public places, 68.8% favored increasing the cigarette tax, 85.1% supported health warnings on cigarette packages, and 85.7% favored banning tobacco advertising. The likelihood to support these measures was associated with gender, educational level, and personal income. Smokers were less likely to support these measures than non-smokers, with decreased support expressed by daily smokers compared to occasional smokers, and heavy smokers compared to light smokers. The proportion of switching to cheaper cigarette brands, decreasing smoking, and quitting smoking altogether with increased cigarette prices were 29.1%, 30.90% and 40.0% for occasional smokers, respectively; and 30.8%, 32.7% and 36.5% for daily smokers, respectively. CONCLUSION. Results from this study indicate strong public support in key WHO FCTC measures and that increases in cigarette price may reduce tobacco consumption among Chinese urban residents. Findings from this study have implications with respect to policymaking and legislation for tobacco control in China

    In the case of high density traffic flow, traditional traffic data statistical analysis methods, which not only have certain errors and lead to inaccurate data, but also have many limitations such as labor consumption, can no longer meet the demand for traffic analysis. Drones for traffic data, based on an aerial bird\u27s-eye view, no offset, and error-free complete statistics of urban road shooting section of all data, while greatly reducing cost consumption. A multi-dimensional simulation model is established for the UAV data to the Hohhot central urban area\u27s road simulation platform.     Dynamic Feature Pruning and Consolidation for Occluded Person Re-Identification

    Occluded person re-identification (ReID) is a challenging problem due to contamination from occluders, and existing approaches address the issue with prior knowledge cues, eg human body key points, semantic segmentations and etc, which easily fails in the presents of heavy occlusion and other humans as occluders. In this paper, we propose a feature pruning and consolidation (FPC) framework to circumvent explicit human structure parse, which mainly consists of a sparse encoder, a global and local feature ranking module, and a feature consolidation decoder. Specifically, the sparse encoder drops less important image tokens (mostly related to background noise and occluders) solely according to correlation within the class token attention instead of relying on prior human shape information. Subsequently, the ranking stage relies on the preserved tokens produced by the sparse encoder to identify k-nearest neighbors from a pre-trained gallery memory by measuring the image and patch-level combined similarity. Finally, we use the feature consolidation module to compensate pruned features using identified neighbors for recovering essential information while disregarding disturbance from noise and occlusion. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework on occluded, partial and holistic Re-ID datasets. In particular, our method outperforms state-of-the-art results by at least 8.6% mAP and 6.0% Rank-1 accuracy on the challenging Occluded-Duke dataset.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure

    Clinical implications of metastatic lymph node ratio in gastric cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The 5-year survival rate in patients with gastric cancer is still poor, and lymph node metastasis is considered one of the most important prognostic factors. However, there are controversies in the classification of lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer. This study was carried out to investigate whether the metastatic lymph node ratio is a reliable classification of lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer in Chinese.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>224 cases with gastric cancer with more than D1 dissection were retrospectively reviewed. The association between the total number of resected lymph nodes and the number of metastatic lymph nodes was determined. The prognostic value of the metastastic node ratio, defined as the ratio of the number of metastatic lymph nodes over the total number of resected lymph nodes, and the pN classification was assessed.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The number of metastatic lymph node increased with the number of total resected lymph nodes. A Cox regression revealed that the metastatic node ratio, the number of metastatic nodes, histological type, and histological growth pattern independently influenced prognosis. The 5-year survival rates were 78%, 61%, 25%, 0% in cases with a metastastic node ratio of 0%, > 0% but < 40%, 40–80%, > 80%, respectively (<it>P </it>< 0.001), and were 78%, 62%, 38%, 0% in cases with gastric cancer histologically classified as pN0, pN1, pN2, pN3, respectively (<it>P </it>< 0.001).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The metastatic lymph node ratio is a simple and useful independent prognostic factor. It may obviate possible confounding factors that are related to stage migration, and should be considered as an important component in the lymph node category.</p

    Prevalence of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms of High School Students in Shandong Province During the COVID-19 Epidemic

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (covid-19) has brought physical risks as well as psychological challenges to the whole world. High school students are a special group suffering from both the academic pressure and the threat of the epidemic. The present study aims to conduct an online survey to investigate the psychological status of high school students in Shandong Province. Methods: Using a web-based cross-sectional survey, data was collected from 1,018 voluntary high school students assessed with demographic information, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and a self-designed online-study effect survey. Correlation analysis was performed to explore the relationships between depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and study effect. Result: The prevalence of depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and a combination of depressive and anxiety symptoms was 52.4, 31.4, and 26.8%, respectively, among high school students in Shandong Province during the COVID-19 epidemic. And from moderate to severe severity level, the rates of depressive symptoms and anxious symptoms were 17.6 and 4.6%. Female students exhibited a higher rate and severity of mental symptoms than male, and grade one senior high school students got a higher rate and severity of mental symptoms than the other two grades. Nearly half of the students were not satisfied with their online-study effect. The PHQ-9 score had a strong positive correlation with the GAD-7 score. Both the PHQ-9 score the GAD-7 score had a negative correlation with the study-effect survey score. Conclusion: Quite a number of high school students suffered from depression and anxiety symptoms during the COVID-19 epidemic. Sufficient attentions should be paid, and necessary supports should be provided, to protect the mental health of this special group

    Improving Safety Service Patrol Performance

    Safety Service Patrols (SSPs) provide motorists with assistance free of charge on most freeways and some key primary roads in Virginia. This research project is focused on developing a tool to help the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) optimize SSP routes and schedules (hereafter called SSP-OPT). The computational tool, SSP-OPT, takes readily available data (e.g., corridor and segment lengths, turnaround points, average annual daily traffic) and outputs potential SSP configurations that meet the desired criteria and produce the best possible performance metrics for a given corridor. At a high level, the main components of the developed tool include capabilities to: a) generate alternative feasible SSP beat configurations for a corridor; b)predict incidents and SSP characteristics (e.g., incident frequency, SSP service time) for a given SSP beat configuration; c) estimate performance measures (e.g., SSP response time, number of incidents responded to); and d) identify and present the best SSP configuration(s) through visual aids that facilitate decision making. To generate the incident data needed for the simulation-based SSP-OPT tool, a hierarchical negative binomial model and a hierarchical Weibull model are developed for incident frequencies and incident durations, respectively, based on the historical incident data. These models have been found to be effective in simulating the spatiotemporal distribution of incidents along highway corridors and for generating their attribute data (e.g., incident type, duration). The simulation program employs a discrete event-based approach and requires a few calibration parameters (e.g., SSP vehicle speed). After calibrating the model, the validation results show good agreement with field observations when applied to a sample SSP corridor from I-95. A user interface is created for the SSP-OPT tool in MS Excel to facilitate data entry and visualization of the output metrics for a given corridor. The output includes the list of alternative feasible beat configurations and aggregated performance measures from multiple runs for each individual beat, as well as for each alternative beat configuration spanning the entire corridor. The proposed SSP optimization model could be applied to corridors with or without existing SSP service. The tool will help identify the best beat configurations to minimize SSP response times and maximize SSP response rates for a given number of SSP vehicles on a corridor. Implementing these optimal solutions in the field will result in travel time savings and improve highway safety since the SSP resources will be more efficiently utilized, thus reducing the impacts of incidents on traffic flow

    Modulation of Preactivation of PPAR- β

    The aim of this study is to investigate the neuroprotective effects and relevant mechanism of GW0742, an agonist of PPAR-β, after global cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (GCIRI) in rats. The rats showed memory and cognitive impairment and cytomorphological change in the hippocampus neurons following GCIRI. These effects were significantly improved by pretreatment with GW0742 in the dose-dependent manner. The expressions of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α were increased after GCIRI, while the increases in these proinflammatory cytokines by GCIRI were inhibited by GW0742 pretreatment. Similarly, GW0742 pretreatment also improved the GCIRI-induced decrease in the expression of IL-10, which can act as an inhibitory cytokine to reduce cerebral ischemic injury. For another, NF-κB p65 expression was significantly increased in hippocampal neurons with apparent nuclear translocation after global cerebral IRI, and these phenomena were also largely attenuated by GW0742 pretreatment. Moreover, the mRNA and protein expressions of PPAR-β were significantly decreased in GCIRI + GW0742 groups when compared with those in GCIRI group. Our data suggests that the PPAR-β agonist GW0742 can exert significant neuroprotective effect against GCIRI in rats via PPAR-β activation and its anti-inflammation effect mediated by the inhibition of expression and activation of NF-κB in the hippocampus

    Fast and Secure Key Generation with Channel Obfuscation in Slowly Varying Environments

    Physical-layer secret key generation has emerged as a promising solution for establishing cryptographic keys by leveraging reciprocal and time-varying wireless channels. However, existing approaches suffer from low key generation rates and vulnerabilities under various attacks in slowly varying environments. We propose a new physical-layer secret key generation approach with channel obfuscation, which improves the dynamic property of channel parameters based on random filtering and random antenna scheduling. Our approach makes one party obfuscate the channel to allow the legitimate party to obtain similar dynamic channel parameters, yet prevents a third party from inferring the obfuscation information. Our approach allows more random bits to be extracted from the obfuscated channel parameters by a joint design of the K-L transform and adaptive quantization. Results from a testbed implementation show that our approach, compared to the existing ones that we evaluate, performs the best in generating high entropy bits at a fast rate and is able to resist various attacks in slowly varying environments. Specifically, our approach can achieve a significantly faster secret bit generation rate at roughly 67 bit/pkt, and the key sequences can pass the randomness tests of the NIST test suite
