    On the Performance of Turbo Signal Recovery with Partial DFT Sensing Matrices

    This letter is on the performance of the turbo signal recovery (TSR) algorithm for partial discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrices based compressed sensing. Based on state evolution analysis, we prove that TSR with a partial DFT sensing matrix outperforms the well-known approximate message passing (AMP) algorithm with an independent identically distributed (IID) sensing matrix.Comment: to appear in IEEE Signal Processing Letter

    Bifurcation analysis of Rössler system with multiple delayed feedback

    In this paper, regarding the delay as parameter, we investigate the effect of delay on the dynamics of a Rössler system with multiple delayed feedback proposed by Ghosh and Chowdhury. At first we consider the stability of equilibrium and the existence of Hopf bifurcations. Then an explicit algorithm for determining the direction and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions is derived by using the normal form theory and center manifold argument. Finally, we give a numerical simulation example which indicates that chaotic oscillation is converted into a stable steady state or a stable periodic orbit when the delay passes through certain critical values

    Vegetation changes and land surface feedbacks drive shifts in local temperatures over Central Asia

    Vegetation changes play a vital role in modifying local temperatures although, until now, the climate feedback effects of vegetation changes are still poorly known and large uncertainties exist, especially over Central Asia. In this study, using remote sensing and re-analysis of existing data, we evaluated the impact of vegetation changes on local temperatures. Our results indicate that vegetation changes have a significant unidirectional causality relationship with regard to local temperature changes. We found that vegetation greening over Central Asia as a whole induced a cooling effect on the local temperatures. We also found that evapotranspiration (ET) exhibits greater sensitivity to the increases of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as compared to albedo in arid/semi-arid/semi-humid regions, potentially leading to a cooling effect. However, in humid regions, albedo warming completely surpasses ET cooling, causing a pronounced warming. Our findings suggest that using appropriate strategies to protect vulnerable dryland ecosystems from degradation, should lead to future benefits related to greening ecosystems and mitigation for rising temperatures

    The Utilization of Rice Blast Resistance Genes in Hybrid Rice Breeding in China

    Hybrid rice has demonstrated promises of yield gain for over several decades since its conception and massive deployment in China. One of the common bottlenecks of hybrid rice is the availability of suitable breeding lines as parents to produce marketable rice grains. Due to limitation of genetic diversity of breeding parent, hybrid rice is extremely vulnerable to rice blast disease caused by the fungal pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae. M. oryzae is a highly adaptive fungus that often gains new virulence to reduce crop resistance resulting in massive yield loss and crop failure. To secure yield gain of hybrid rice, identification and integration of diverse sources of resistance genes into hybrid rice are super critical. In this chapter, we will present strategies to identify, characterize, and stack effective blast resistance genes in hybrid rice breeding in China
