Improving the Creation of Hot Spot Policing Patrol Routes: Comparing Cognitive Heuristic Performance to an Automated Spatial Computation Approach
Hot spot policing involves the deployment of police patrols to places where high levels of crime have previously concentrated. The creation of patrol routes in these hot spots is mainly a manual process that involves using the results from an analysis of spatial patterns of crime to identify the areas and draw the routes that police officers are required to patrol. In this article we introduce a computational approach for automating the creation of hot spot policing patrol routes. The computational techniques we introduce created patrol routes that covered areas of higher levels of crime than an equivalent manual approach for creating hot spot policing patrol routes, and were more efficient in how they covered crime hot spots. Although the evidence on hot spot policing interventions shows they are effective in decreasing crime, the findings from the current research suggest that the impact of these interventions can potentially be greater when using the computational approaches that we introduce for creating hot spot policing patrol routes
Early‐onset coenzyme Q10 deficiency associated with ataxia and respiratory chain dysfunction due to novel pathogenic COQ8A variants, including a large intragenic deletion
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) deficiency is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous subtype of mitochondrial disease. We report two girls with ataxia and mitochondrial respiratory chain deficiency who were shown to have primary CoQ10 deficiency. Muscle histochemistry displayed signs of mitochondrial dysfunction—ragged red fibers, mitochondrial paracrystalline inclusions, and lipid deposits while biochemical analyses revealed complex II+III respiratory chain deficiencies. MRI brain demonstrated cerebral and cerebellar atrophy. Targeted molecular analysis identified a homozygous c.1015G>A, p.(Ala339Thr) COQ8A variant in subject 1, while subject 2 was found to harbor a single heterozygous c.1029_1030delinsCA variant predicting a p.Gln343_Val344delinsHisMet amino acid substitution. Subsequent investigations identified a large‐scale COQ8A deletion in trans to the c.1029_1030delinsCA allele. A skin biopsy facilitated cDNA studies that confirmed exon skipping in the fibroblast derived COQ8A mRNA transcript. This report expands the molecular genetic spectrum associated with COQ8A ‐related mitochondrial disease and highlights the importance of thorough investigation of candidate pathogenic variants to establish phase. Rapid diagnosis is of the utmost importance as patients may benefit from therapeutic CoQ10 supplementation
Prioritization of fish communities with a view to conservation and restoration on a large scale European basin, the Loire (France)
The hierarchical organization of important sites for the conservation or the
restoration of fish communities is a great challenge for managers, especially because of
financial or time constraints. In this perspective, we developed a methodology, which is
easy to implement in different locations. Based on the fish assemblage characteristics of
the Loire basin (France), we created a synthetic conservation value index including the
rarity, the conservation status and the species origin. The relationship between this new
synthetic index and the Fish-Based Index allowed us to establish a classification protocol
of the sites along the Loire including fish assemblages to be restored or conserved. Sites
presenting disturbed fish assemblages, a low rarity index, few threatened species, and a
high proportion of non-native species were considered as important for the restoration of
fish biodiversity. These sites were found mainly in areas where the assemblages are
typical of the bream zone, e.g. with a higher number of eurytopic and limnophilic
species. On the contrary, important sites for conservation were defined as having an
important conservation potential (high RI, a lot of threatened species, and few nonnatives
fish species) and an undisturbed fish assemblage similar to the expected community
if habitats are undisturbed. Important sites for conservation were found in the
Loire basin’s medium reaches which host assemblages typical for the grayling and the
barbell zones, e.g. with a higher number of rheophilic species. The synthetic conservation value index could be adapted and completed with other criteria according to
management priorities and capacities
Pentalogy of Cantrell: two patients and a review to determine prognostic factors for optimal approach
Two patients with incomplete pentalogy of Cantrell are described. The first was a girl with a large omphalocele with evisceration of the heart, liver and intestines with an intact sternum. Echocardiography showed profound intracardiac defects. The girl died 33 h after birth. The second patient was a female fetus with ectopia cordis (EC) without intracardiac anomalies; a large omphalocele with evisceration of the heart, stomach, spleen and liver; a hypoplastic sternum and rib cage; and a scoliosis. The pregnancy was terminated. A review of patients described in the literature is presented with the intention of finding prognostic factors for an optimal approach to patients with the pentalogy of Cantrell. In conclusion the prognosis seems to be poorer in patients with the complete form of pentalogy of Cantrell, EC, and patients with associated anomalies. Intracardial defects do not seem to be a prognostic factor
