    A Battery Lifetime Guarantee Scheme for Selective Applications in Mobile Multimedia Electronics

    Computer systems & NetworksUnpredictable battery lifetimes because of multitasking significantly harm the availability of mobile devices. Existing research has focused on improving energy efficiency in order to extend battery lifetimes or guaranteeing the battery lifetime of the whole system. However, some applications are prioritized over others and these are required to stay in operation for certain durations. This paper suggests a battery lifetime guarantee method for prioritized applications in multitasking mobile systems. Our approach profiles and analyzes the battery usage patterns of each task and suggests preserving the energy budget for prioritized tasks while maintaining service quality by scheduling non-prioritized tasks to use only surplus energy. The suggested method is evaluated in an Android smartphone. Our approach shows 1%~10% positive errors with respect to lifetime guarantee but no negative errors.ope

    Clinical characteristics and treatment modalities of vulvovaginal atrophy in genitourinary syndrome of menopause

    Background: Genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) causes symptoms such as vaginal dryness, dysuria, repetitive urinary tract infection and urinary urgency may affect daily activities, sexual relationships, and overall quality of life. The aim of the study was to provide the clinical characteristics of VVA patients in South Korea and the effectiveness as well as complications of the currently used low dose estrogen vaginal suppository.Methods: 52 women who has visited the outpatient gynecology clinic of the National Health Insurance Service Ilsan Hospital from January 2018 to December 2019 were recruited as study subjects. For the analysis of the clinical characteristics, subjective symptoms described by the patient’s own words such as vaginal dryness, pain, dysuria, dyspareunia, or no symptoms at all were included. Objective signs such as thinning of vaginal rugae, mucosal dryness, and mucosal fragility and the presence of petechiae were recorded.Results: Vaginal dryness was the most common complaint (92.3%). Thinning of the vaginal rugae was the most commonly noted objective sign (73.1%). Of the 52 subjects, 31 (59.6%) refrained from using the low dose estrogen vaginal suppository. The most common reason for not being able to use the suppository was the inability to insert the suppository (32.3%).Conclusions: Although patient-reported symptoms and clinical objectivity through physical examination are two components in diagnosing VVA, further study is warranted for a more objective and discriminatory diagnosis criteria for VVA. As the only available treatment modality was low dose vaginal estrogen suppository, comparison with other treatment modalities were not available

    Polymorphism of a COLIA1 Gene Sp1 Binding Site in Korean Women with Pelvic Organ Prolapse

    PURPOSE: To evaluate the possible influence of G-->T substitution at the Sp1-binding site of the COLIA1 gene on the risk of pelvic organ prolapse (POP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 15 women with advanced stage POP. Fifteen control subjects with uterine myomas among the postmenopausal women were matched for age and parity. DNA was obtained from peripheral blood leukocytes. The fragments of the first intron of the COLIA1 gene were amplified by real time polymerase chain reaction. The polymorphism was identified using LightCycler Technology with hybridization probes. Sequencing reactions were performed on each template using commercial primer. RESULTS: Two groups had no significant difference in medical history, surgical, and smoking history. The homozygous peaks in two groups were noted at 57 on melting curve analysis. Sequencing reactions confirmed the G/G alleles in the 30 specimens tested. We could not find any polymorphism at the Sp1-binding site in COLIA1 gene with advanced stage POP. Statistical significance was considered to be p < .05. CONCLUSION: The polymorphism of the Sp1-binding site in the COLIA1 gene did not contribute to the development of POP in Korea.ope

    Control of Crystal Morphology for Mold Flux During High-Aluminum AHSS Continuous Casting Process

    In the present manuscript, the efforts to control the crystal morphology are carried out aiming at improving the lubrication of lime-alumina-based mold flux for casting advanced high-strength steel with high aluminum. Jackson alpha factors for crystals of melt crystallization in multi-component mold fluxes are established and reasonably evaluated by applying thermodynamic databases to understand the crystal morphology control both in lime-alumina-based and lime-silica-based mold fluxes. The results show that Jackson alpha factor and supercooling are the most critical factors to determine the crystal morphology in a mold flux. Crystals precipitating in mold fluxes appear with different morphologies due to their different Jackson alpha factors and are likely to be more faceted with higher Jackson alpha factor. In addition, there is a critical supercooling degree for crystal morphology dendritic transition. When the supercooling over the critical value, the crystals transform from faceted shape to dendritic ones in morphology as the kinetic roughening occurs. Typically, the critical supercooling degrees for cuspidine dendritic transition in the lime-silica-based mold fluxes are evaluated to be between 0.05 and 0.06. Finally, addition of a small amount of Li2O in the mold flux can increase the Jackson alpha factor and decrease the supercooling for cuspidine precipitation; thus, it is favorable to enhance a faceted cuspidine crystal.1132Ysciescopu

    Comparative Studies on Toluene Removal and Pressure Drop in Biofilters Using Different Packing Materials.

    Abstract: To select the best available packing material for malodorous organic gases such as toluene and benzene, biofilter performance was compared in biofilters employed different packing materials including porous ceramic (celite), Jeju scoria (lava), a mixture of granular activated carbon (GAC) and celite (GAC/celite), and cubic polyurethane foam (PU). A toluene-degrading bacterium, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia T3-c, was used as the inoculum. The maximum elimination capacities in the celite, lava, and GAC/celite biofilters were 100, 130, and 110 g m , which was 2 to 3.5 times higher than for the other biofilters. The pressure drop gradually increased in the GAC/ celite, celite and lava biofilters after 23 day due to bacterial over-growth, and the toluene removal efficiency remarkably decreased with increasing pressure drop. Backwashing method was not effective for the control of biomass in these biofilters. In the PU biofilter, however, backwashing allowed maintenance of a pressure drop of 1 to 3 mm H 2 O m -1 and a removal efficiency of &gt; 80%, indicating that the PU was the best packing material for toluene removal among the packing materials tested
