    Information flow between composite stock index and individual stocks

    We investigate the strength and the direction of information transfer in the U.S. stock market between the composite stock price index of stock market and prices of individual stocks using the transfer entropy. Through the directionality of the information transfer, we find that individual stocks are influenced by the index of the market.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Relationships among Parent-child Communication, Self-esteem and Sexual Assertiveness for Male and Female University Students: Gender Difference

    PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the relationships among parent-child communication, self-esteem and sexual assertiveness for male and female university students. METHODS: This descriptive study used a comparative survey design that utilized self-report questionnaires. A total of 470 participants were male and female university students in B metropolitan city. RESULTS: The degree of open communication use was higher for female students in comparison to male students, There were no differences in dysfunctional communication for both the father-child communication. There were no differences between males and females for the mother-child communication either. The degree of self-esteem was higher for male students in comparison to the female students. The degree of sexual assertiveness was higher for female students in comparison to the male students. The grade, religion, major, allowance source, marital status of parents, and relationship experience with opposite sex were influencing factors for the male students' sexual assertiveness whereas the individual's major and physical contact were influencing factors for the female students. CONCLUSION: Self-esteem and mother-child open communication were influencing factors of sexual assertiveness. Thus, the nursing intervention based on the influencing factors is needed in order for male and female students to express sexual assertiveness

    Vietnamese Immigrant Women's Experience of Maternity after Childbirth

    PURPOSE: To understand the meaning and essence of Vietnamese migrant women's maternal experience after childbirth. METHODS: A phenomenological methodology was used for this study. Study participants were six Vietnamese marriage migrant women who had experience of childbirth in Korea. Data collection period was from February 1 through November 4, 2016. Data were collected through in-depth interview and analyzed with the Giorgi method. RESULTS: As a result of study, six main meanings and 12 themes were produced. The six main meanings produced in this study were ‘childbirth realized in the double difficulty’, ‘concerned health between the ở cữ and the sanhujori’, ‘tired body with hard parenting’, ‘crowding regret for international marriage after childbirth’, ‘Grateful partner becoming the prop’, and ‘Growing maternal instinct by moving the mind and body in a foreign country’. CONCLUSION: Consideration for postnatal care is necessary from Vietnamese marriage migrant women's viewpoint. Systematic education programs that can improve nursing capability of medical personnel for multicultured clinical practice with development of a postnatal care program suited to multiculture are also necessary

    Analytical Modeling of Rheological Postbuckling Behavior of Wood-Based Composite Panels Under Cyclic Hygro-Loading

    This study was conducted to develop analytical models to predict postbuckling behavior of woodbased composite panels under cyclic humidity conditions. Both the Rayleigh method and von Karman theory of nonlinear plate with imperfection were used to obtain a closed form solution to the hygrobuckling and postbuckling. In addition, mechano-sorptive creep effects were also taken into account for the derivation of analytical models. The closed-form solutions derived for both isotropic and orthotropic materials showed a good agreement with the experimental results in terms of the center deformation of hardboard, especially in the case of the edge movements. The unrecovery deformation was much greater at the first cycle and then decreased as the number of cyclic hygro-loading increased

    Mild Hypothermia Attenuates Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 Induction via Activation of Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase-1/2 in a Focal Cerebral Ischemia Model

    Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in cerebral vascular endothelium induced by ischemic insult triggers leukocyte infiltration and inflammatory reaction. We investigated the mechanism of hypothermic suppression of ICAM-1 in a model of focal cerebral ischemia. Rats underwent 2 hours of middle cerebral artery occlusion and were kept at 37°C or 33°C during occlusion and rewarmed to normal temperature immediately after reperfusion. Under hypothermic condition, robust activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase-1/2 (ERK1/2) was observed in vascular endothelium of ischemic brain. Hypothermic suppression of ICAM-1 was reversed by ERK1/2 inhibition. Phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) in ischemic vessel was attenuated by hypothermia. STAT3 inhibitor suppressed ICAM-1 production induced by stroke. ERK1/2 inhibition enhanced phosphorylation and DNA binding activity of STAT3 in hypothermic condition. In this study, we demonstrated that hypothermic suppression of ICAM-1 induction is mediated by enhanced ERK1/2 activation and subsequent attenuation of STAT3 action

    Novel water filtration of saline water in the outermost layer of mangrove roots

    The scarcity of fresh water is a global challenge faced at present. Several desalination methods have been suggested to secure fresh water from sea water. However, conventional methods suffer from technical limitations, such as high power consumption, expensive operating costs, and limited system durability. In this study, we examined the feasibility of using halophytes as a novel technology of desalinating high-concentration saline water for long periods. This study investigated the biophysical characteristics of sea water filtration in the roots of the mangrove Rhizophora stylosa from a plant hydrodynamic point of view. R. stylosa can grow even in saline water, and the salt level in its roots is regulated within a certain threshold value through filtration. The root possesses a hierarchical, triple layered pore structure in the epidermis, and most Na+ ions are filtered at the first sublayer of the outermost layer. The high blockage of Na+ ions is attributed to the high surface zeta potential of the first layer. The second layer, which is composed of macroporous structures, also facilitates Na+ ion filtration.     Effects of Rating Training on Inter-Rater Consistency for Developing a Dental Hygiene Clinical Rater Qualification System

    We tried to develop itemized evaluation criteria and a clinical rater qualification system through rating training of inter-rater consistency for experienced clinical dental hygienists and dental hygiene clinical educators. A total of 15 clinical dental hygienists with 1-year careers participated as clinical examination candidates, while 5 dental hygienists with 3-year educations and clinical careers or longer participated as clinical raters. They all took the clinical examination as examinees. The results were compared, and the consistency of competence was measured. The comparison of clinical competence between candidates and clinical raters showed that the candidate group's mean clinical competence ranged from 2.96 to 3.55 on a 5-point system in a total of 3 instruments (Probe, Explorer, Curet), while the clinical rater group's mean clinical competence ranged from 4.05 to 4.29. There was a higher inter-rater consistency after education of raters in the following 4 items: Probe, Explorer, Curet, and insertion on distal surface. The mean score distribution of clinical raters ranged from 75% to 100%, which was more uniform in the competence to detect an artificial calculus than that of candidates (25% to 100%). According to the above results, there was a necessity in the operating clinical rater qualification system for comprehensive dental hygiene clinicians. Furthermore, in order to execute the clinical rater qualification system, it will be necessary to keep conducting a series of studies on educational content, time, frequency, and educator level

    High glucose induces MCP-1 expression partly via tyrosine kinase–AP-1 pathway in peritoneal mesothelial cells.BackgroundHigh glucose in peritoneal dialysis solutions has been implicated in the pathogenesis of peritoneal fibrosis in chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients. However, the mechanisms are not very clear. Peritoneal macrophages seem to participate in the process of peritoneal fibrosis and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) plays a key role in the recruitment of monocytes toward the peritoneal cavity. However, little is known about the effect of high glucose on MCP-1 expression and its signal transduction pathway in human peritoneal mesothelial cells.MethodsMesothelial cells were cultured with glucose (5 to 100 mmol/L) or mannitol chronically for up to seven days. MCP-1 expression of mRNA and protein was measured by Northern blot analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Chemotactic activity of high-glucose–conditioned culture supernatant was measured by chemotactic assay. To examine the roles of the transcription factors activator protein-1 (AP-1) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) was performed.ResultsGlucose induced MCP-1 mRNA expression in a time- and dose-dependent manner. MCP-1 protein in cell culture supernant was also increased. Equivalent concentrations of mannitol had no significant effect. High-glucose–conditioned supernatant possessed an increased chemotactic activity for monocytes, which was neutralized by anti–MCP-1 antibody. EMSA revealed that glucose increased the AP-1 binding activity in a time- and dose-dependent manner, but not NF-κB. Curcumin, an inhibitor of AP-1, dose-dependently suppressed the induction of MCP-1 mRNA by high glucose. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as genistein (12.5 to 50 μmol/L) and herbimycin A (0.1 to 1 μmol/L) inhibited the high-glucose–induced MCP-1 mRNA expression in a dose-dependent manner, and also suppressed the high-glucose–induced AP-1 binding activity.ConclusionsHigh glucose induced mesothelial MCP-1 expression partly via the tyrosine kinase-AP-1 pathway
