A DNA barcode library of the beetle reference collection (Insecta: Coleoptera) in the National Science Museum, Korea

AbstractColeoptera is a group of insects that are most diverse among insect resources. Although used as indicator species and applied in developing new drugs, it is difficult to identify them quickly. Since the development of a method using mitochondrial DNA information for identification, studies have been conducted in Korea to swiftly and accurately identify species. The National Science Museum of Korea (NSMK) has been collecting and morphologically identifying domestic reference insects since 2013, and building a database of DNA barcodes with digital images. The NSMK completed construction of a database of digital images and DNA barcodes of 60 beetle species in the Korean National Research Information System. A total of 179 specimens and 60 species were used for the analysis, and the averages of intraspecific and interspecific variations were 0.70Ā±0.45% and 26.34Ā±6.01%, respectively, with variation rates ranging from 0% to 1.45% and 9.83% to 56.23%, respectively

Appropriateness of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis in pediatric patients visiting the emergency department due to animal bite

Purpose To study the appropriateness of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (rPEP) for children with animal bite who visited the emergency department (ED). Methods The study enrolled children younger than 18 years with animal bite who visited the National Medical Center ED between January 2014 and October 2017. The childrenā€™s electronic medical records were retrospectively reviewed. Data for analysis included age, sex, body parts bitten by animals, species of animals, regions where animal bites occurred, history of recent antibiotics therapy and tetanus vaccination, and justification by the 2017 Guidelines for Rabies Control in Korea and implementation of rPEP. In children who underwent unjustified rPEP or did not undergo justified one, we recorded their guardiansā€™ opinion for or against rPEP. Results Of the 63 enrolled children, rPEP was justified for 38 children by the Korean guidelines. Of the 38 children, 35 actually underwent rPEP. Among the remaining 3 children, 2 did not undergo the prophylaxis as per the guardiansā€™ requests. Among the 25 children whose rPEP was not justified, 8 underwent the prophylaxis. Of these 8 children, 7 did based on the guardiansā€™ requests. Conclusion In this study, inappropriate rPEP was usually affected by the guardiansā€™ requests, regardless of the criteria for such prophylaxis. Thus, their requests for or against rPEP should be discussed with emergency physicians who are aware of the relevant criteria to prevent occurrence of rabies or unnecessary use of medical resources

Transparent, low resistance, and flexible amorphous ZnO-doped In2O3 Anode Grown on a PES Substrate

Transparent and low resistance amorphous ZnO-doped In2O3 (IZO) anode films were grown by radio-frequency (rf) sputtering on an organic passivated polyethersulfone (PES) substrate for use in flexible organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Under optimized growth conditions, a sheet resistance of 15.2 /, average transmittance above 89% in the green range, and a root mean square roughness of 0.375 nm were obtained, even for the IZO anode film grown in a pure Ar ambient without the addition of oxygen as a reactive gas. All of the IZO anode films had an amorphous structure regardless of the rf power and the working pressure due to the low substrate temperature of 50Ā°C and the structural stability of the amorphous IZO films. In addition, an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profile obtained for the IZO/PES showed no obvious evidence of interfacial reactions between the IZO anode and the PES substrate, except for some indiffusion of oxygen atoms from the IZO anode. Furthermore, the current-voltage-luminance of the flexible OLEDs fabricated on IZO anode was found to be critically dependent on the sheet resistance of the IZO anode. This work was supported by a Korea Research Foundation grant funded by the Korean Government (MOEHRD: Basic Research Promotion Fund)(KRF-2006-003-D00243) and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy

A Korean patient with Guillain-BarrƩ syndrome following acute hepatitis E whose cholestasis resolved with steroid therapy

Autochthonous hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an emerging pathogen in developed countries, and several cases of acute HEV infection have been reported in South Korea. However, there have been no reports on HEV-associated Guillain-BarrƩ syndrome (GBS) in Korea. We recently experienced the case of a 58-year-old Korean male with acute HEV infection after ingesting raw deer meat. Persistent cholestasis was resolved by the administration of prednisolone. At 2.5 months after the clinical presentation of HEV infection, the patient developed weakness of the lower limbs, and was diagnosed with GBS associated with acute hepatitis E. To our knowledge, this is the second report on supportive steroid therapy for persistent cholestasis due to hepatitis E, and the first report of GBS in a Korean patient with acute HEV infection

'Big Tigers, Big Data:' Learning Social Reactions to Chinaā€™s Anticorruption Campaign through Online Feedback

This study examines the effect of campaign-style anticorruption on political support using the case of Chinaā€™s most recent anticorruption drive, which stands out for its harsh crackdown on high-ranking officials, or the ā€œbig tigers.ā€ An exploratory text analysis of over 370,000 online comments on the downfall of the first 100 big tigers, from 2012 to 2015, reveals that public support for the top national leader who initiated the campaign significantly exceeds that afforded to anticorruption agencies and institutions. Further regression analyses show that support for the leaders vis-Ć -vis intuitions increases with the tigersā€™ party ranking. Findings suggest that while campaign-style enforcement can reinforce the central authority and magnify support for individual leaders, it may also marginalize the role of legal institutions crucial to long-term corruption control.published_or_final_versio

Thoracic Splenosis: A Case Report and the Importance of Clinical History

    Get PDF
We present a case of thoracic splenosis in a 42-yr-old man with a medical history of abdominal surgery for a penetration injury with an iron bar of the left abdomen and back. He had been in good condition, but a chest radiograph taken during a regular checkup showed a multinodular left pleura-based mass. Computed tomography (CT) showed that the mass was well-enhanced and homogeneous, indicating a sclerosing hemangioma. Following its removal by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, the mass appeared similar to a hemangioma, with marked adhesion to the left side diaphragmatic pleura and lung parenchyma. Frozen section showed that the lesion was a solid mass consisted with abundant lymphoid cells, suggesting a low grade lymphoma. On permanent section, however, the mass was found to be composed of white pulp, red pulp, a thick capsule and trabeculae and was diagnosed as ectopic splenic tissue, or thoracic splenosis. Review of the patient's history and chest CT at admission revealed that the patient had undergone a splenectomy for the penetration injury 20 yr previously

Fecal examinations using the Kato Katz technique were performed on a total of 1,287 villagers (945 students and 342 general inhabitants) of Oddar Meanchey Province, Cambodia in May 2007 and November 2009. The overall intestinal helminth egg positive rate was 23.9%, and the most prevalent helminth species was hookworms (21.6%). Other helminth eggs detected included echinostomes (1.0%), Enterobius vermicularis (0.8%), small trematode eggs (0.7%), which may include Opisthorchis viverrini and Haplorchis spp., and Hymenolepis nana (0.4%). In order to recover adult echinostomes, we treated 2 patients with 10-15 mg/kg praziquantel and purged. Total 14 adult echinostomes, 1 and 13 worms from each patient, were collected. The echinostomes characteristically had 49-51 collar spines and 2 round or slightly lobated testes. They were identified as Echinostoma ilocanum (Garrison, 1908) Odhner, 1911. So far as literature are concerned, this is the first record on the discovery of human E. ilocanum infection in Cambodia
