    Photoluminescence pressure coefficients of InAs/GaAs quantum dots

    We have investigated the band-gap pressure coefficients of self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots by calculating 17 systems with different quantum dot shape, size, and alloying profile using atomistic empirical pseudopotential method within the ``strained linear combination of bulk bands'' approach. Our results confirm the experimentally observed significant reductions of the band gap pressure coefficients from the bulk values. We show that the nonlinear pressure coefficients of the bulk InAs and GaAs are responsible for these reductions. We also find a rough universal pressure coefficient versus band gap relationship which agrees quantitatively with the experimental results. We find linear relationships between the percentage of electron wavefunction on the GaAs and the quantum dot band gaps and pressure coefficients. These linear relationships can be used to get the information of the electron wavefunctions.Comment: 8 pages, 2 tables, 4 figure

    Evolution of Galaxy Luminosity Function and Luminosity Function by Density Environment at 0.03<z<0.5

    Using galaxy sample observed by the BATC large-field multi-color sky survey and galaxy data of SDSS in the overlapped fields, we study the dependence of the restframe rr-band galaxy luminosity function on redshift and on large-scale environment. The large-scale environment is defined by isodensity contour with density contrast \delta\rho/\rho. The data set is a composite sample of 69,671 galaxies with redshifts 0.03 < z < 0.5 and r < 21.5 mag. The redshifts are composed by three parts: 1) spectroscopic redshifts in SDSS for local and most luminous galaxies; 2) 20-color photometric redshifts derived from BATC and SDSS; 3) 5-color photometric redshifts in SDSS. We find that the faint-end slope \alpha steepens slightly from -1.21 at z ~ 0.06 to -1.35 at z ~ 0.4, which is the natural consequence of the hierarchical formation of galaxies. The luminosity function also differs with different environments. The value of \alpha changes from -1.21 at underdense regions to -1.37 at overdense regions and the corresponding M* brightens from -22.26 to -22.64.     Probing for cosmological parameters with LAMOST measurement

    In this paper we study the sensitivity of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) project to the determination of cosmological parameters, employing the Monte Carlo Markov Chains (MCMC) method. For comparison, we first analyze the constraints on cosmological parameters from current observational data, including WMAP, SDSS and SN Ia. We then simulate the 3D matter power spectrum data expected from LAMOST, together with the simulated CMB data for PLANCK and the SN Ia from 5-year Supernovae Legacy Survey (SNLS). With the simulated data, we investigate the future improvement on cosmological parameter constraints, emphasizing the role of LAMOST. Our results show the potential of LAMOST in probing for the cosmological parameters, especially in constraining the equation-of-state (EoS) of the dark energy and the neutrino mass.Comment: 7 pages and 3 figures.     Fibroblast activation protein-α promotes the growth and migration of lung cancer cells via the PI3K and sonic hedgehog pathways

    A characteristic of the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in cancer cells is the upregulation of mesenchymal markers. Fibroblast activation protein α (FAPα) is predominantly expressed by stromal fibroblasts. Previous studies have demonstrated that FAPα is also expressed by certain epithelium-derived cancer cells and is involved in the regulation of certain signaling pathways. One of our previous studies showed that FAPα promoted the proliferation of breast cancer cells via the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway. In the present study, the A549 adenocarcinoma (AC) and SK-MES-1 squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) lung cancer cell lines were transfected with FAPα. The FAPα-expressing SK-MES-1 cells exhibited an increased growth rate, whereas the FAPα-expressing A549 cells exhibited a similar growth rate, compared with respective empty vector‑transfected control cells. Electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS)-based attachment and wound-healing assays showed that the overexpression of FAPα markedly increased the adhesive and migratory properties of the SK-MES-1 cells but not those of the A549 cells. Additionally, inhibitors of focal adhesion kinase, agonist-induced phospholipase C, neural Wiskott‑Aldrich syndrome protein, extracellular signal‑regulated kinase, Rho-associated protein kinase, PI3K, and sonic hedgehog (SHH) were used to evaluate the interaction between FAPα and signaling pathways. Only the inhibitors of SHH and PI3K inhibited the increased motility of the FAPα‑expressing SK-MES-1 cells. Western blot analysis confirmed the activation of PI3K/AKT and SHH/GLI family zinc finger 1 signaling in the FAPα-expressing SK-MES-1 cells. These results revealed that FAPα promoted the growth, adhesion and migration of lung SCC cells. In addition, FAPα regulated lung cancer cell function, potentially via the PI3K and SHH pathways. Further investigations are required to examine the role of FAPα in lung AC cells

    High-Redshift Cosmography

    We constrain the parameters describing the kinematical state of the universe using a cosmographic approach, which is fundamental in that it requires a very minimal set of assumptions (namely to specify a metric) and does not rely on the dynamical equations for gravity. On the data side, we consider the most recent compilations of Supernovae and Gamma Ray Bursts catalogues. This allows to further extend the cosmographic fit up to z=6.6z = 6.6, i.e. up to redshift for which one could start to resolve the low z degeneracy among competing cosmological models. In order to reliably control the cosmographic approach at high redshifts, we adopt the expansion in the improved parameter y=z/(1+z)y = z/(1+z). This series has the great advantage to hold also for z>1z > 1 and hence it is the appropriate tool for handling data including non-nearby distance indicators. We find that Gamma Ray Bursts, probing higher redshifts than Supernovae, have constraining power and do require (and statistically allow) a cosmographic expansion at higher order than Supernovae alone. Exploiting the set of data from Union and GRBs catalogues, we show (for the first time in a purely cosmographic approach parametrized by deceleration q0q_0, jerk j0j_0, snap s0s_0) a definitively negative deceleration parameter q0q_0 up to the 3σ\sigma confidence level. We present also forecasts for realistic data sets that are likely to be obtained in the next few years.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables.     We investigate the correlation between the neutrino mass limit and dark energy with time evolving equation of state. Parameterizing dark energy as w=w_0+w_1*z/(1+z), we make a global fit using Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique to determine w_0, w_1, neutrino mass as well as other cosmological parameters simultaneously. We pay particular attention to the correlation between neutrino mass \Sigma m_{\nu} and w_1 using current cosmological observations as well as the future simulated datasets such as PLANCK, SNAP and LAMOST.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl

The tunneling rate arises as a consequence of the unified first law of thermodynamics in such a dynamical system.     Constraining Primordial Non-Gaussianity with High-Redshift Probes

    We present an analysis of the constraints on the amplitude of primordial non-Gaussianity of local type described by the dimensionless parameter fNLf_{\rm NL}. These constraints are set by the auto-correlation functions (ACFs) of two large scale structure probes, the radio sources from NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) and the quasar catalogue of Sloan Digital Sky Survey Release Six (SDSS DR6 QSOs), as well as by their cross-correlation functions (CCFs) with the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature map (Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect). Several systematic effects that may affect the observational estimates of the ACFs and of the CCFs are investigated and conservatively accounted for. Our approach exploits the large-scale scale-dependence of the non-Gaussian halo bias. The derived constraints on {fNLf_{\rm NL}} coming from the NVSS CCF and from the QSO ACF and CCF are weaker than those previously obtained from the NVSS ACF, but still consistent with them. Finally, we obtain the constraints on fNL=53±25f_{\rm NL}=53\pm25 (1σ1\,\sigma) and fNL=58±24f_{\rm NL}=58\pm24 (1σ1\,\sigma) from NVSS data and SDSS DR6 QSO data, respectively.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication on JCA

    Unpacking Cultural Variations in Social Anxiety and the Offensive-Type of Taijin Kyofusho Through the Indirect Effects of Intolerance of Uncertainty and Self-Construals

    This paper presents two studies that aim to unpack cultural variations in general social anxiety and the offensive-type of Taijin Kyofusho (OTKS) – a type of social anxiety characterized by the extreme fear of offending others. Cultural variations in the expression and manifestation of social anxiety are well established; however, the mechanisms underpinning this relation are unclear. The present studies use the Parallel Multiple Mediation Model to study how social anxiety and OTKS are jointly shaped by self-construal and intolerance of uncertainty. Study 1 compared Euro-Canadians and Chinese migrants in Canada. Results showed a mean group difference in OTKS, but not social anxiety, with the difference mediated by intolerance of uncertainty (IU). Study 2 tested this pattern of multiple mediations in Japanese, Chinese and Euro-Canadian cultural contexts. Results showed significant differences among these three cultural groups on both social anxiety and OTKS via multiple mediators (e.g., independent vs. interdependent self-construals and IU). Findings in both studies revealed that OTKS seems to be a psychopathology that is not specific to Japanese participants. The underlying mechanisms and processes of OTKS are also significantly different from social anxiety. Significant cultural variations in social anxiety and OTKS between Chinese vs. Japanese cultural contexts were observed in Study 2. These studies demonstrate the conceptual and empirical advantages of using more complex models to unpack the psychological mechanisms shaping cultural variations in social anxiety and OTKS

    Study on Evolvement Complexity in an Artificial Stock Market

    An artificial stock market is established based on multi-agent . Each agent has a limit memory of the history of stock price, and will choose an action according to his memory and trading strategy. The trading strategy of each agent evolves ceaselessly as a result of self-teaching mechanism. Simulation results exhibit that large events are frequent in the fluctuation of the stock price generated by the present model when compared with a normal process, and the price returns distribution is L\'{e}vy distribution in the central part followed by an approximately exponential truncation. In addition, by defining a variable to gauge the "evolvement complexity" of this system, we have found a phase cross-over from simple-phase to complex-phase along with the increase of the number of individuals, which may be a ubiquitous phenomenon in multifarious real-life systems.Comment: 4 pages and 4 figure
