    New Spectrophotometric Determination of Chromium and Cobalt with Disodium Ethylenediaminetetraacetate

    The light absorptions of complexes between EDTA and various metallic ions were measured by using Beckmann model DU spectrophotometer and it was found that a new double complex consisting of EDTA, Cr_2O_7^ and Co_ had strong absorbancy. Utilizing the nature of this complex spectrophotometric determinations of chromium and cobalt were investigated and 5~30γ/ml of chromium and 10~80γ/ml of cobalt could be determined under certain conditions. The composition of this complex was suggested to be (Co-EDTA)_7Cr_2O_7

    Identification of galactofuranose antigens such as galactomannoproteins and fungal-type galactomannan from the yellow koji fungus (Aspergillus oryzae)

    Filamentous fungi belonging to the genus Aspergillus are known to possess galactomannan in their cell walls. Galactomannan is highly antigenic to humans and has been reported to be involved in the pathogenicity of pathogenic filamentous fungi, such as A. fumigatus, and in immune responses. In this study, we aimed to confirm the presence of D-galactofuranose-containing glycans and to clarify the biosynthesis of D-galactofuranose-containing glycans in Aspergillus oryzae, a yellow koji fungus. We found that the galactofuranose antigen is also present in A. oryzae. Deletion of ugmA, which encodes UDP-galactopyranose mutase in A. oryzae, suppressed mycelial elongation, suggesting that D-galactofuranose-containing glycans play an important role in cell wall integrity in A. oryzae. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry revealed that the galactofuranose-containing sugar chain was deficient and that core mannan backbone structures were present in ΔugmA A. oryzae, indicating the presence of fungal-type galactomannan in the cell wall fraction of A. oryzae. The findings of this study provide new insights into the cell wall structure of A. oryzae, which is essential for the production of fermented foods in Japan

    Prediction of heading date, culm length, and biomass from canopy-height-related parameters derived from time-series UAV observations of rice

    Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are powerful tools for monitoring crops for high-throughput phenotyping. Time-series aerial photography of fields can record the whole process of crop growth. Canopy height (CH), which is vertical plant growth, has been used as an indicator for the evaluation of lodging tolerance and the prediction of biomass and yield. However, there have been few attempts to use UAV-derived time-series CH data for field testing of crop lines. Here we provide a novel framework for trait prediction using CH data in rice. We generated UAV-based digital surface models of crops to extract CH data of 30 Japanese rice cultivars in 2019, 2020, and 2021. CH-related parameters were calculated in a non-linear time-series model as an S-shaped plant growth curve. The maximum saturation CH value was the most important predictor for culm length. The time point at the maximum CH contributed to the prediction of days to heading, and was able to predict stem and leaf weight and aboveground weight, possibly reflecting the association of biomass with duration of vegetative growth. These results indicate that the CH-related parameters acquired by UAV can be useful as predictors of traits typically measured by hand

    前回、本学衛生技術科24~28期生の臨床検査技師国家試験合格率に影響する因子について報告してから早くも5年の月日が経過しました。臨床検査技師を取り巻く環境は、この数年で激変し検査技師の量から質の向上が求められています。国家試験の内容も、それに応じて難易度が増しつつある。そんな状況下で本年度33期生の国家試験合格率が近年に無く低水準に終わった。この低水準であった原因を考えることは今後の本学教育の向上に役立つものと考え、今回分析し考察しました

    The first Japanese biobank of patient‐derived pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia xenograft models

    A lack of practical resources in Japan has limited preclinical discovery and testing of therapies for pediatric relapsed and refractory acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), which has poor outcomes. Here, we established 57 patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) in NOD.Cg-Prkdcscidll2rgtm1Sug/ShiJic (NOG) mice and created a biobank by preserving PDX cells including three extramedullary relapsed ALL PDXs. We demonstrated that our PDX mice and PDX cells mimicked the biological features of relapsed ALL and that PDX models reproduced treatment-mediated clonal selection. Our PDX biobank is a useful scientific resource for capturing drug sensitivity features of pediatric patients with ALL, providing an essential tool for the development of targeted therapies

    Search for Outer Massive Bodies around Transiting Planetary Systems: Candidates of Faint Stellar Companions around HAT-P-7

    We present results of direct imaging observations for HAT-P-7 taken with the Subaru HiCIAO and the Calar Alto AstraLux. Since the close-in transiting planet HAT-P-7b was reported to have a highly tilted orbit, massive bodies such as giant planets, brown dwarfs, or a binary star are expected to exist in the outer region of this system. We show that there are indeed two candidates for distant faint stellar companions around HAT-P-7. We discuss possible roles played by such companions on the orbital evolution of HAT-P-7b. We conclude that as there is a third body in the system as reported by Winn et al.     A Substellar Companion to Pleiades HII 3441

    We find a new substellar companion to the Pleiades member star, Pleiades HII 3441, using the Subaru telescope with adaptive optics. The discovery is made as part of the high-contrast imaging survey to search for planetary-mass and substellar companions in the Pleiades and young moving groups. The companion has a projected separation of 0".49 +/- 0".02 (66 +/- 2 AU) and a mass of 68 +/- 5 M_J based on three observations in the J-, H-, and K_S-band. The spectral type is estimated to be M7 (~2700 K), and thus no methane absorption is detected in the H band. Our Pleiades observations result in the detection of two substellar companions including one previously reported among 20 observed Pleiades stars, and indicate that the fraction of substellar companions in the Pleiades is about 10.0 +26.1/-8.8 %.
